Backstory: Maki was born into the Bai-Liu family, a rich and prestigious family that had been in charge of Intel operations for the Triad's Kurultai branch. She had an unrelentingly strict, loveless, and abusive upbringing to take her prodigious talents and groom them into an asset for the criminal organization.

However, a combination of her sense of justice and simple spite towards her family led to her instead turning those talents and her insider info against them, leading to the one of the largest mass-arrests of high profile Triad members ever undertaken.

The only members of Maki's family not arrested were her younger brother and her grandparents on her mother's side, who had been under the impression their daughter had married the owner of a media conglomerate. Those 3 had been placed in a witness protection program, but Maki had refused to join them, instead using the event to springboard her career as a professional investigator.
