  1. This is a proto for a Mafia contest using the rules from foonetic #mafia. Each phase (day and night) lasts a maximum of 24 hours, which I think should help prevent a repeat of Werewolves (death by apathy) without going too fast. I really ought to write an introductory blurb but other than that what do you think?
  2.
  3. ===
  4.
  5. - Contract. This is Agoran Mafia. Anyone can join this contract by announcement. Any person who is not a citizen can leave this contract by announcement.
  6.
  7. To play, you must be able to respond once every 24 hours. A game should last less than two weeks (possibly much less depending on activity), but please do not quit before the game is over, as any role quitting has the potential to seriously unbalance the game.
  8.
  9. - Contest. This contract is intended to be a contest, with c. as its contestmaster. It is intended to have a high threshold index but only last a few games.
  10.
  11. - Games. Gameplay is divided into games (if we make it past the first one). If no game is currently running, the contestmaster can start one by announcement. At this point, e can and shall privately set each player's role as described below, and then can and shall start the first phase by announcement.
  12.
  13. - Phases. The game alternates between two phases, day and night, starting with night. The contestmaster SHALL announce a change of phase whenever one occurs.
  14.
  15. Each phase has a maximum duration of 24 hours. If the current phase has lasted longer than that, the contestmaster can and shall immediately start the next one.
  16.
  17. - Citizens. Some persons are citizens. When a game starts, all parties except the contestmaster are citizens. During the game, however, citizens may die. When a citizen dies, e ceases to be a citizen; the contestmaster SHALL announce the death.
  18.
  19. - Victory. There are two sides, the town and the mafia. Each citizen is aligned with one side depending on eir role.
  20. * The town wins when all mafia-aligned persons are dead.
  21. * The mafia wins when there are as many mafia-aligned citizens as town-aligned.
  22.
  23. When either side wins, the game is over, and the contestmaster SHALL award floor(T/N) + floor(T/N)*i points to each person aligned with that side, where T is this contest's threshold index and N is the number of such persons. (Yes, the mafia get more points if they win than the town. Even dead persons get the points, so feel free to sacrifice yourself for your side.)
  24.
  25. - Day. During the day, the citizens form a lynch mob and lynch one citizen (or none). Each citizen has a vote, which can be the name of a citizen, "none" (i.e., don't lynch anyone), or "null" (default, i.e., no opinion). Any citizen can change eir vote to a valid value by announcement. If, at any time, a majority (50%+1) of citizens has the same non-null vote, that person is lynched (i.e., dies) and the day ends.
  26.
  27. - Night. At the end of each night, the Mafia kills one citizen (unless they choose not to or are prevented by the doctor). During the night, several roles have nightly actions requiring a selection. If a citizen with that role is alive, e CAN and SHOULD perform the selection by privately notifying the contestmaster. If the night phase would end without eir doing so, e implicitly selects "none". When all nightly action have been performed, including the mafia's selection of a target, the night ends.
  28.
  29. - Roles. The following roles are defined:
  30.
  31. <Town>
  32.
  33. * Ordinary citizen (OC). No nightly action or special abilities.
  34.
  35. * Doctor (doc). As eir nightly action, the doctor selects one citizen, or "none", to save. At the end of the night, if the doctor selected the same citizen as the mafia, that citizen does not die. Instead, the contestmaster shall privately inform em that e was "saved by the doctor" (without specifying the doctor's identity).
  36.
  37. * Sheriff (cop). As eir nightly action, the sheriff selects one citizen, or "none", to investigate. At the beginning of the next day, if the sheriff is still alive, the contestmaster shall privately inform em of the contents of the sheriff's files on that person (if any). [N1]
  38.
  39. The sheriff's files on a person are either MAFIA or NOT MAFIA, set at the start of the game according to whether each person is in the Mafia. The files can be altered (i.e., forged) as described elsewhere.
  40.
  41. * Detective (det). No nightly action. When a person dies (by any means), the contestmaster shall privately inform em of that person's role.
  42.
  43. <Mafia>
  44.
  45. * Regular mafia (scum). As a nightly action, the regular mafia collectively selects a citizen to kill, or "none" (nokill). Any regular mafia may make this selection on behalf of the whole by privately messaging the contestmaster.
  46.
  47. * Agent. As a nightly action, the agent selects one citizen, or "none", to alter. Upon this selection, the contents of the sheriff's files on that citizen are reversed (e.g. MAFIA changes to NOT MAFIA and vice versa). [N2]
  48.
  49. [N1] E must be a citizen (i.e., alive) at the time the sheriff selects him, but not necessarily at the time e's informed.
  50. [N2] The altering takes place immediately, so if the sheriff selected the same person to investigate that night, e sees the modified files.
  51.
  52. - Choosing roles. The roles are assigned as follows depending on the total number of citizens:
  53.
  54. citizens doc cop det agent # regular mafia
  55. 0-3 1
  56. 4 X 1
  57. 5 X X 1
  58. 6-8 X X X X 1
  59. 9-11 X X X X 2
  60. 12-14 X X X X 3
  61. 15-17 X X X X 4
  62.
  63. The rest of the citizens are ordinary.
  64.
  65. After choosing roles, the contestmaster shall privately send each mafia-aligned citizen a list of mafia-aligned citizens and their roles.
  66.
  67. - Secret information. In general, the gamestate defined by this contract is private information and the contestmaster shall NOT disclose it except as otherwise permitted. Obviously.
  68.
  69. - Amendment. This contract may be amended by any party without three objections.
