Hongseok was born and raised in Hongdae, South Korea with his parents and his older sister, Hyunsook. Hongdae is typically a very creative city and known for its bustling streets, artistic flair and its exciting nightlife. Hongseok loved it there as he enjoyed the vibrancy. He enjoyed how friendly people were and he met all types of people there. The diversity was especially evident in school where about a third of his school were not Korean.

His parents were very dedicated to their jobs and Hongseok sometimes felt like they valued their jobs more than they did their kids. His older sister Hyunsook essentially had to be a second mother to him and look after him despite only being 5 years older than him. It was for this reason that even today that he and his sister as so close. To pass the time, he decided he would learn to dance because he wanted to be like some of his favourite artists like Michael Jackson or Eunhyuk from Super Junior.

School started off great for Hongseok. He excelled in subjects such as music, history and physical education. He generally really enjoyed his time at school. Participating in a bunch of clubs, one of them being gymnastics club which he showed real skill and potential in. He really enjoyed gymnastics club and he made quite a lot of friends there. It was actually how he met his first girlfriend and how they started dating.

He got his first girlfriend at the age of 15. They did gymnastics together and he asked her out while he walked her home from gymnastics. The two of them were inseparable from then on. They did everything together and they were definitely a couple that was envied by most. Everything was going fine in their relationship up until it was getting close to a year of being together. He had started to hear rumours that his girlfriend was cheating on him and apparently had been for about 4 months. He refused to believe the worst about her because, he hadn't told her this but he loved her. He was waiting for their year anniversary together to come up to say it to her. It had finally come up to a week before their anniversary and that is when Hongseok found out. Whilst going to the shops to get snacks for their anniversary night, he saw his girlfriend on a bench in the park across from him, making out with another boy. The thing that made it worse was that he actually knew the boy. He was one of the few friends he had at the school.

Seeing what he saw broke his heart because he loved her. He went over to go and confront the two. He walked in front of them and they immediately noticed him and jumped apart. All he asked was why and she just replied with an 'I don't know' trying to feign sadness. Being the naïve idiot he was, he crumbled, he didn't want to upset her even though she was the one who did wrong. At this point the boy had left already and it was just the two of them. He felt stupid but at the same time, he didn't want to lose her and so they celebrated their anniversary as if nothing happened.

This happened numerous times after this. She would cheat, he would confront her and she would manipulate him into forgiving her. It got to a point where she wasn't even being careful anymore and one time actually kissed the boy outside Hongseok's house as she was meant to be hanging out with him. Hongseok had finally had enough of it and confronted her in school. He threw insults at her and by now the people in the corridor had started to surround them but they didn't care. They were having an insult match and they were both livid. He asked her why she cheated her answer was that it because he was a "prude". Hongseok was taken aback by this and embarrassed that the whole school now knew this. She didn't stop their, she had gone on to say that all they ever did was make out and whenever she wanted to go further, he would get nervous and stop the both of them. Hongseok was even more embarrassed because she was now basically airing out his dirty laundry.

The two of them broke up but by then the damage was done. Word started to spread about how much of prude he was and he was bullied and ridiculed by everyone. Nobody wanted to be seen with him and at home he was alone since his sister had moved out a couple of years prior. He couldn't tell his parents anything because it was too embarrassing and so he resorted to drinking from his parents collection of alcohol. He take a smaller bottle or pour a glass from one of their open bottles. This was just to get out of his own head and be able to just relax and stop thinking and feeling for once. It was around this time that he also started smoking. He smoked a lot of weed in particular and it got so bad that he had to keep his window open most of the time because the smell of weed had settled.

His parents soon started noticing that their collection of alcohol was depleting and that he was the only on who could have taken it. They also started noticing that his room smelled strongly of weed. They confronted him about it but he just ignored them, not caring about anything they were saying. That same day he stole another bottle from their collection. This was what pushed them over the edge and they decided to kick him out of the house.

He was basically now living on the street as he had nobody to turn to and his sister wasn't even in the country. He wandered the streets day and night, sleeping in homeless shelters or on park benches. One day, as he was wondering, he came across an entertainment company. It was one that he had never heard of before but looked quite interesting to him. He didn't know what to do so he decided just to take a chance and go and audition, after all he had nothing to lose at this point. He auditioned with a dance routine and gymnastics routine that he had learnt recently. After the audition, they asked for his address, so they could send him a letter in case he was accepted but he instead gave them his phone number.

After a couple of weeks of waiting, he received a phone call from Nova Entertainment and to his surprise, he was accepted into the company. He was extremely grateful to them because he had nowhere to go and it was getting cold. He soon moved into their dorms.

He actually almost got kicked out of the company. It was because he had gone out drinking and had comeback to the dorms a complete mess. They didn't want this sort of thing to tarnish their image so they almost kicked him out but after begging, they agreed to give him another chance.
