- A CIA interrogator is lured into a ruse that puts London at risk of a biological attack.
- I came in totally unprepared, didn't know who played in it or what is was about. Toke a little bit to get in too, but once the plots started twisting and suspense got it in the film was very enjoyable. Although some was predictable, I still found it one of the better secret agent movies lately, with the bad guys not doing to much stupid things. Although at the end I did wonder why didn't Michael Douglas set the timer to 5 seconds and just get it over with instead of 5 minutes and giving somebody time to stop it.
- Unlocked had an interesting if slightly cliché premise. A CIA Agent is called in to interrogate a suspect. After breaking him, she gets a phone call asking her to come in and interrogate the same suspect. Yes, the CIA and MI5 have been breached and she turns rogue in an attempt to stop the plot from unraveling, while not being able to trust anyone she meets (apart from a random burglar in the typical case of right place-right time...and conveniently right skillset, but I'll get to that later). I think my biggest appreciation of the plot is that it flips the stereotype on Muslims in this kind of movie. They're not the faceless terrorists hellbent on destroying the unbeliever that have populated these kinds of movies for the last fifteen years, or at least not all of them are; they're just another group of people caught up in the middle.

While it starts out okay, Unlocked really starts to fall apart come the second and third acts, when plot holes start getting ripped open and character stupidity starts to propel the plot forward. WARNING: SPOILERS INBOUND. Our heroine, Alice, starts to make silly decisions with no basis in logic, like trusting an ex-marine burglar who just happens to be stealing her television at just the right time in her life that completely makes it not suspect at all. Not at all guys, not even remotely. When confronted with the big bad of the movie (in a painfully predictable twist of identity), she decides to take the magazine out of her gun as she threatens him. I get it, she doesn't want to harm him despite his massive betrayals, how unilaterally pi**ed off at him she is, and of course his planned act of mass terrorism, but she was only going to blow his kneecaps off at worst. Of course that allows her to be bested and taken off her guard, all in the name of dragging the confrontation out needlessly longer. On which note, why on Earth would you put a timer on a biological weapon that doesn't even take effect for two days, and can be triggered from a safe distance?! Not to mention the "I can't turn it off, the timer's already ticking down" followed by Alice literally pressing the cancel button on the phone timer. And this is all without mentioning how she somehow manages to find everyone super quick and easy, and just appears to thwart the villainous plot just in time, every time. Calling these plot holes is being kind, they're gaping voids of story that make no logical sense at all.

It's not a complete loss of a movie though; there were actually some things I liked about it. The breakout of the hotel room, for instance, is smart and engaging in the best way a spy movie can be. She manoeuvres herself round the interrogation room to get the best shots off, including shooting a guy in the head through a wall, aiming thanks to the reflection of a mirror through the gap in the door hinges. All right, the dual-wielding pistols shooting indiscriminately as cover let it down a bit, but even so, that action sequence was solid. The Rottweilers in a lift were also scene-stealers as well.

But amusingly, the best thing about the whole movie? Orlando Bloom. I mean, you know your movie is in trouble when the best thing about it is Orlando Bloom. Even in a castlist as great and prestigious as this, Orlando Bloom being top is a massive blow. His performance as Jack, the ex-marine burglar is great. He's funny, he's charming, and he adds levity to an otherwise overly serious spy flick without going full-blown comedy relief. Also big props to his utterly convincing London accent, something not even Toni Collette could quite manage (also, now I know how it feels to have your nation represented by foreigners; not a single British actor in a movie set in Britain with British characters). Noomi Rapace was as Noomi as ever. I wouldn't say her performance was bad, but she lacked emotional resonance that could really get us invested in her character, and on the note of her accent, the movie ended and I still had no idea where her character was meant to be from. John Malkovich is entertaining in his limited screen time, while Michael Douglas is under-utilised and just acts as a massive red flag for the twist reveal. Seriously, how was Orlando Bloom the best thing about this cast?

At it's best, Unlocked is painfully mediocre. While it sets up some interesting scenarios, it doesn't play them to their best, often using the easiest narrative tricks to get out of them, resulting in plot holes and character stupidity. Most of the cast seemed like they signed the dotted line for a quick buck, but at least Orlando Bloom had some fun with it. At the end of the day, I'm not sure I would recommend this to anyone. Worst movie of 2017 so far? It appears so. 4/10.
- I suppose this went down easily enough for me because I grew up with this kind of stuff, and can surrender to it as a kind of cinematic comfort food. But still. For those not so inclined, the entertainment value could conceivably be derived from the brisk, no-nonsense direction by Michael Apted, and the talents of what they used to call “an all-star cast”.
