While supernatural phenomena has been whispered, shared, and even witnessed throughout the world, no event was quite as abnormal as what they call the 'Awakening'. Or as many prefer to name it, the Apocalypse. To this day, many scholars remain ignorant to just how this colossal change took place, or why it happened to their planet, but one thing is known for sure:

Magic had finally touched the world. From the ocean, geysers of mana sprung forth and spread to the air. Everything rapidly changed thereafter, beginning with the climates, and later, the environments throughout the world. Deserts rapidly changed between scalding pools of glass, to enormous icebergs. Rain forests more or less flooded. And more importantly, fantasy creatures appeared. Monsters of all types, from humanoid to beast flooded the land.

Just as quickly as it happened however, the geysers of mana had stopped, and soon enough, the world began to slowly stabilize itself; however, humanity had suffered a huge amount of casualties. Not only as a result of well, death, but also from the magic that tainted their bodies. Countless humanoid races sprang up, and now, the remaining communities of the world are just now beginning to start.

The last remaining humans have survived in the few pockets found throughout the world, but even then, those humans were beginning to show signs of change from the magic that permeated the air. The creatures they battled with have fortunately withdrawn in numbers, but still pose an ever-growing threat.

Let's keep things basic: This setting takes place on earth, magic has recently stopped spurting out out about 30 years ago.

Everything is pretty ravaged/razed, biomes may be drastically changed. But things are still livable.


Terms/Stuff

The Beyond: The Beyond refers to a supernatural realm separate from the dimension earth lays on. Entering The Beyond usually requires powerful magic, but doing so is dangerous, as it's home to countless demons. The Beyond is ruled by several particularly powerful demons that promise great power in exchange for their worship.

Other than that, religion is essentially based around real life religion. Worshiping anything from The Beyond is considered taboo (and thus not allowed to really be from the start, since it implies evil.)

Awakening: The Apocalypse, Judgement Day, Rapture, whatever people like to call it. This was an event that occurred about 30 years years ago, and only lasted for one year. The damage the event caused was permanent.

Mana Springs: Mana springs are remnants from The Awakening. Pools of magically infused water, blessed by magical power. Mana springs are coveted resources, as their magical water is said to contain cleansing and healing properties.

Unfortunately, mana springs have been drying up, and when they do, they tend to dry up along with the land around them.
