- I’m writing to raise my concerns that a Boris Johnson and the rest of cabinet are not heeding SAGE advice regarding the new South Africa variant of the SARS-CoV-2. Specifically the implementation of automatic quarantine of all persons returning to the UK, not just those on adult flights from South Africa. I site as an example when Stanley Johnson travelled to Greece via Poland to bypass the then Greek policy of “no arrivals from the UK“.( I also accept that was Greece choice).
- The reason for my concern is that a V South Africa variant is only affected about 10% of cases of the Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine, and the UK Kent variant has a higher transmission rate. I feel it is only a matter of time for both these virus variants intermingle resulting in a newer “Highly transmissible vaccine resistant” variant to emerge, thus undermining the NHS vaccine efforts we have had so far in getting nearly 14 million people first dose vaccination, which would further undermine release of Covid restrictions and subsequent economic recovery.
