  1. = DIVINE =
  2. Requisite trait: Faith
  3. Normal title: Varies, commonly Follower, Acolyte or Devotee
  4. Highest form title: Varies, commonly Avatar or Aspect
  5. Representative color: Yellow
  6.
  7. Divine magic is sourced from the Gods, each of whom has a limited type of magic that they can offer to their subjects, such as Nailaxkha's Divine Fire and Fanekh's Gilded Touch. Each type of divine magic usually represents an entire school of magic, with greater and greater power accessed through greater and greater connections with a God. Divine magic cannot be given freely, even if the God desires such; it may be doled out in small amounts, but permanent magical skill comes only from deep personal sacrifice and opening oneself up to their chosen God. Divine magic may be the only way to truly access certain kinds of power outside of high-level and abstract Arcane work, but almost always requires fully devoting oneself to the path of their God.
  8.
  9. Most commonly, high-level Divine mages are referred to as Avatars, people who have so thoroughly aligned with the desires and path of their God that they become an earthly point of contact for that God, and thus receive the most unbridled and pure form of that God's power as possible.
  10.
  11. Divine mages account for about 23% of all mages.
  12.
  13. = ARCANE =
  14. Requisite trait: Focus
  15. Normal form title: Mage/Magi, Arcanist, many specialized form titles such as Mesmer for illusion mages
  16. Highest form title: Wizard
  17. Representative color: Blue
  18.
  19. The most raw and 'basic' form of magic, Arcane carries more potential than any other kind of magic but more caveats as well. Arcane magic is the most flexible of all types, but consequently requires considerably more investment than all other types. Arcane magic's requirement of Focus comes from its immense complexity, demanding consistent and grueling study to attain and maintain high-level magical prowess. Arcane magic can theoretically do anything, but it takes years of constant effort to become familiar with and fluent in even the most basic level of spells, and many Arcanists spend their entire lives in pursuit of magical perfection that they may never attain.
  20.
  21. Arcane magic is, for this reason, not quite as common as the others, being considerably less accessible. Its most basic spells are extraordinarily common, such as Telekinesis or Spark, but those who would call themselves Arcanists are rarer than all other magical pursuits besides Spiritualism. Associated with intellect, self discipline and hard work, Arcane magic is often well regarded, although the way it is regarded as above other kinds of magic by scholarly elites has made it a source of resentment over the last century.
  22.
  23. The term "Wizard" is reserved solely for the most aged, wizened Arcanists, and anyone who is honored with the title of Wizard is considered a master of the art.
  24.
  25. Arcanists account for about 15% of all mages.
  26.
  27. = ICHOR =
  28. Requisite trait: Vision
  29. Normal form title: Sculptor, Shaper
  30. Highest form title: Architect
  31. Representative color: Black
  32.
  33. Ichor magic is magic centered around the use of or production of Ichor, the primordial substance that makes up the world. It is separated into two categories: Formation and Sublimation. Formation is the use of one's creativity, will and vision to sculpt physical objects out of or draw magic from Ichor. Sublimation is the reduction of an entity into its base Ichor components, effectively destroying it and reducing it to Ichor.
  34.
  35. Formation is one of the most common types of magic practiced worldwide, commonly employed by workers to avert the need for individual tools and allowing them to form tools as needed from Ichor. Objects created through Formation are temporary and usually dissolve as soon as they exit the attention of their creators, but higher-level mages can create objects that can last days, months, or even permanently. Almost any object can be created through Formation, and so it is also popular with sculptors and artists who see Ichor as a valuable medium. It has lower combat applications than other kinds of magic, although it can be used to create weapons, armor, and barriers by quick enough mages. Higher level mages may use it to create Thralls, entities of Ichor infused with souls of various types, and it is common for powerful Ichor mages to maintain a single Thrall companion.
  36.
  37. Sublimation is the use of a powerful and specialized antimagic effect designed to reduce objects to their component Ichor. This type of magic is exceedingly rare and used only by extremely high-level Ichor mages, usually for the purpose of producing Ichor on the spot out of objects... but it can be a potent weapon, as well. Used on anything living, this kind of magic is considered extraordinarily unethical.
  38.
  39. The term "Architect" is reserved only for Ichor mages capable of extracting large quantities of magic or even producing souls from Ichor, a title so rare that it has only been applied to 15 individuals throughout history. These individuals are considered masters of Ichor magic.
  40.
  41. Ichor mages account for about 18% of all mages.
  42.
  43. = NATURE =
  44. Requisite trait: Passion
  45. Normal form title: Witch
  46. Highest form title: Druid
  47. Representative color: Green
  48.
  49. Nature magic is a kind of magic derived from a connection with one of ten elements. There are four primary elements, Air, Fire, Earth, Water, a secondary element corresponding to each main element, Lightning, Magma, Metal and Ice, and two rarer tertiary elements, Vitality and Wild.
  50.
  51. Nature mages form deep bonds with the world around them, and require a sort of emotional openness that other magics do not. A nature mage only succeeds if they can open themselves to the world and allow a given element to flow through them, and they succeed best if they choose an element which naturally fits with them. Buoyant, quick and spontaneous types may prefer Air magic, whereas powerful, passionate and ambitious sorts might prefer Fire magic. One's connection and compatibility with their element is a necessary component of succeeding at Nature magic.
  52.
  53. Nature magic is restricted to its elements, and so creative uses of each medium make for the best mages as well. But, for all of its requisites, Nature magic is one of the easiest to learn and use if done right, and relies on such innate parts of a person that it requires much less learning than others. Nature mages also learn to appreciate and work with the wilderness in their training, and may choose to become Wildkin to broaden their connections with the world and further enhance their magic. Most witches attain a Familiar, an animal either wild or domesticated whose bond has been carefully cultivated with its witch that it attains minor magical properties such as greater hardiness, enhanced intellect and the ability to share senses with its witch.
  54.
  55. However, care must be taken. Losing one's connections, or severe and sudden personality shifts, may make it difficult to use one's chosen elements. On the other hand, getting too deeply entwined with one's elements may transition a person into an Elemental, which, although it lends them greater power, comes with some downsides. Nature magic is a careful balance that requires constant emotional and personal maintenance, and in this it has almost therapeutic properties that many monks and similar folk may seek it out for.
  56.
  57. Druids are special witches whose power has become so great and whose connections so thorough that they've integrated fully with a land, which now contains their soul. These Druids maintain large territories several miles in diameter, and the most powerful among them can control entire forests. Inside these territories, Druids become some of the most deadly and powerful mages on the planet, and even outside of them they maintain great strength and control over their element. They cannot be killed by normal means, unless the land itself is destroyed, as their body will merely regenerate within the forest.
  58.
  59. Nature mages account for about 33% of all mages.
  60.
  61. = SPIRIT ==
  62. Requisite trait: Empathy and/or Will
  63. Normal form title: Spiritualist, Shaman, Swindler (Generally derogatory, refers to manipulative spiritualists)
  64. Highest form title: Lich (Interaction), Astralist (Self/Sight)
  65. Representative color: Red
  66.
  67. Spirit mages are those who specialize in the observation of or interaction with Astral entities. Spirit magic is divided into three subdisciplines, Self, Insight and Interaction. Usually a spirit mage maintains a combination of all three, but is likely to specialize in one. Mages specializing in Self usually focus on maintaining the health and power of their own spirit and force of will, using the insight granted by the ability to see their own spirit to empower it. These mages may also draw on their spirit power to cast elemental effects much like those found in Nature magic, but may use any element, though with a much more limited pool of power to draw upon.
  68.
  69. Insight mages are able to see more clearly in the Astral plane, and may become experts at reading the souls of others or observing Astral phenomena. The purpose for this magic ranges from Shamans, who may diagnose and help to heal ailments of the spirit, all the way to manipulators and swindlers that will find vulnerabilities in the spirits of others and exploit them for their own gain.
  70.
  71. Interaction mages focus on the actual ability to physically manipulate souls. These types of mages may use Spirit magic as a weapon, either against other mortal enemies or in the termination of threatening Astral entities. They may also use this magic to engage in Puppeteering Necromancy, a specialized type of Necromancy involving projecting parts of one's own soul to puppeteer and control corpses or even inanimate objects at higher levels. This type of magic is especially common, mainly because it can be useful in banishing baleful spirits.
  72.
  73. All forms of Spirit magic involve cultivating one's own force of will, allowing them to project it into others and giving them the strength to view the world around them as it truly is in the Astral Plane. Some, especially Insight magic, also make use of Empathy, as connections with other people make it far easier to read souls.
  74.
  75. The term "Astralist" is reserved for only the most insightful mages, or for those with especially powerful souls. These folk know a lot about the spirit world and often have much wisdom to share, and constitute some of the most renowned and beloved Shamans. The term Lich relates to Interaction-specialized mages who have learned to project their entire soul from their body, using their comatose body as a form of phylactery. These liches are often very powerful necromancers capable of controlling small undead armies with the division of their soul, or may instead become Soul Furnace liches who consume souls to power themselves.
  76.
  77. Spirit mages account for about 11% of all mages.
  78.
  79. = CANTRIP CASTING =
  80. Most advanced form of casting, involving drawing on magical energies and casting without any kind of assistance. Common in Nature, Ichor, Spirit and Divine magic, but more rare in Arcane magic, where the complexities of Arcane magic are more easily accessed with pre-prepared spells. Cantrip casting in Arcane magic is common with low level magical feats, but cantrip casting high level effects is a sign of prowess.
  81.
  82. Some effects cannot be cantrip casted because they are too powerful. Most effects that can be cast as spells can be cantrip casted by a more advanced caster, but there are a number of effects which can only be Ritual cast.
  83.
  84. = SPELL CASTING =
  85. The use of the Supernal Dialogue, a celestial language, to speak effects into being. Spells are often prepared, taught and learned rigorously, and many have been passed down, teased out of gods and even celestial entities such as the Weaver. A new spell entering the lexicon is very rare and usually a cause for great celebration. Spells are constructed from power words, individual Supernal words that each alter the meaning of the spell.
  86.
  87. A spell becomes more complex per word spoken, and speaking a spell outside of one's expertise will either cause it to fail or backfire severely. One or two word spells are easily cast by beginners, whereas eight word spells are among the most powerful available. The greatest level of spellcasting achievable to mortals at this time is nine words; spells up to eleven words have been spoken, but invariably end in the deaths of their casters. Spells are exponential, as each word of a spell multiplies its power significantly. It is theorized that thirteen words would be required to unwind the universe, and fifteen would be needed to speak a new one into being.
  88.
  89. = RITUAL CASTING =
  90. The most powerful and complex form of casting, available to Witches, Arcanists and Divine casters, but most common in Arcane and Divine casting. Each ritual uses different components to call out or channel powers greater than oneself; Arcane ritual casting usually involves ritual implements that bore deeper into the fabric of reality than the human mind, Divine ritual casting is in effect an intensive and exhaustive prayer, and Nature ritual casting involves beseeching the spirit of the world to turn as one desires.
  91.
  92. Supernal Dialogue is involved in all forms of ritual casting, with a complex intertwining of symbols. Not all symbols used in Ritual casting come from Supernal Dialogue, but are simply ancient "Ritual Tongue", so ubiquitous and common throughout history that they've come to be interpreted and understood by higher powers. Usually, in a similar manner to Alchemy, ingredients and special materials are offered, with the exact types dictated by a sort of mutually understood symbolism.
  93.
  94. Ritual casting is an extraordinarily complex topic. An Arcane process attended by advanced machinery and intricate runes is just as much a ritual as hastily scrawled chalk symbols and words howled at the night sky, but in all forms, it is reaching outside of oneself or using oneself as a conduit for a greater power, effectively allowing access to magical effects far beyond what one person is capable of.
