Detective James "Sonny" Crockett and detective Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, of the Miami-Dade police department's organized crime bureau vice unit, work deep undercover as seedy criminals to infiltrate and bring down the various criminal enterprises of southern Florida.
Stubble-faced detective Crockett lived in a sailboat guarded by his alligator Elvis. His partner Tubbs was a black New York cop looking for his brother's killer. Together they took on the Florida drug world. The show influenced men's fashions toward Italo-casual and interior decor toward the Miami look. Very trendy music and unusual guest performers.
Miami vice was crime show which ran from 1984-1990 and it starred don Johnson as detective sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as his eccentric partner Ricardo tubbs who investigate crimes situated in the Miami district ranging from drugs , prostitution , rape , robbery etc as they take orders from there mysterious superior played by Edward James olmos as lieutenant Martin Casstio and with there team consisting of Gina calabrese Saundra Santiago , Stan swetik Micheal Talbot , Olivia brown trudy Barnes . Miami vice was crucified for being one of the silliest shows of the 80s because of the laughable aesthetic clothing but I personally didn't think that affected the dynamic of the show I think the success of the show was the sizzling chemistry between Johnson and Thomas which made it watchable for the most part Johnson giving the most consistently entertaining performance Thomas being watchable as well but not quite the better actor compared to johnsons packed resume where's for me the definitive star of the show was Edward James olmos as Castillo who exhibited a quite intensity and a flagrant passion for those he cared about . I recommend you purchase the box set on Amazon as I did or at your local video store here below are my top 10 episodes I recommend you seek out and try and view and the worst so you don't watch them whatsoever . Miami Vice was a one of a kind show. Famous for it's fashion, music & glamour, it was a cop show like no other. Don Johnson & Philip Michael Thomas fitted the roles well & had a good supporting cast. Seasons 1 & 2 were great. Very fresh & very original. Season 3 however had a slightly different feel to it. The Daytona was replaced by the Testerossa which I personally didn't think was as nice. Crockett looked more of a ponce in this season & also had a hairstyle I didn't think suited him much. Season 3 also started to show some slightly poor episodes, but most were good. Season 4 was different yet again. Crocket's hair was now longer & Tubbs wore an awful beard, making him lose most of his coolness! Even though season 4 had the odd good episode, death & the lady, child's play & blood & roses, most were just absolute nonsense. By the end of season 4 I have to admit I'd gotten rather bored of this show which seemed to have completely lost it's way. However, Miami Vice returned for a 5th, & final, season. Season 5 was different yet again, & I personally think that this season was the best! Crockett was more distant, quiet, & scruffy, which I think suited the character much better. This season had no silly or cheesy stories, it was just great all the way through & seemed to find it's way again. Very different to season 4. I believe if the show had kept that quality it could have ran longer, but sadly it didn't.

After the show became a huge hit in prime time then Ferrari boss Enzo Ferrari did not like that a lookalike kit car was being used for the show so he offered NBC and the producers a real Testarossa for season 3. Therefore the Daytona kit car had to be destroyed on camera early in the season and the new Ferrari was used all the way through the fifth and final season. And the rest is television history and one of the black kit cars used along with the white Testarossa were purchased by a private collector and both cars are sitting in an auto museum in south Florida today.
