12 Hour Challenge #10
February 28-March 1st, 2020
Happy 10th challenge, everybody! Welcome to those new and old alike. The 12 Hour Challenge is designed to help you get your feet wet in the pool that is speedrunning. The concept hasn't changed in ten iterations of the event: pick a game to speedrun, then spend twelve hours learning as much as you can about that game and completing your first run. Study as hard or as relaxed as you want. Pick the same game as your friends and challenge them to a race at the end. Do whatever you want. It's your challenge.
Whether you've been around the speedrunning community long enough to be submitting your runs on VHS, or you just discovered speedrunning recently and want to get started, the 12 Hour Challenge is designed for you. In fact, the best part about the challenge is how it gets new people into the hobby, while it also gets veterans playing entirely new and unexpected games.
As usual, please use #12HourChallenge on social media, and help spread the word. Share the challenge with your friends and let's make a weekend out of it!
It's a leap year, so make a leap of faith and trust fate to choose your speedruns for you, if you dare.
The theme for challenge #10 is 12 HOUR CHALLENGE: RANDOMIZER.
Let your fate be decided by the randomizer.
1) Spin the genre wheel: http://bombch.us/DIq9
2) Spin the console wheel: http://bombch.us/DIq_ (spin it again if you don't have access to a particular console, or it won't work with the genre you spun)
3) Pick a game that fits that genre and console!
Note: The theme is an OPTIONAL piece of the challenge, designed to keep things interesting for returning participants. You are NOT required to use this theme. You are encouraged to consider it. If there's a game you are dying to learn and it doesn't fit the theme, don't let it stop you from learning it.
The "12 Hour Challenge" Tag
Twitch has generously added a "12 Hour Challenge" tag that anyone can use for their stream. On the day of your challenge, be sure to set your stream tags to include BOTH "12 Hour Challenge" and "Speedrun". This combination should be unique enough that we filter the streamers who are just blindly tagging their stream as 12 Hour Challenge without reading what it actually is for! Don't forget to remove the tags from your stream when you are finished.
If you followed my directions above, during the 12 Hour Challenge, your stream will show up here: http://bombch.us/DAuN
This is the link for all of the streams tagged with "12 Hour Challenge" and "Speedrun". It's a great link to share for viewing reasons, too!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - JOIN THE 12 HOUR CHALLENGE DISCORD!!
The speedrunning community is extremely welcoming and willing to help you learn! To facilitate this, the 12 Hour Challenge itself has an official Discord that participants can join: https://discord.gg/yaSYafu
Join the Discord for tons of information about specific game communities, or to ask any other challenge questions you might have. It's a very supportive and engaging group of people, who are just as excited about the challenge as you are. There's a master list of game-specific Discords, a place to post your first run splits and VOD, and channels for asking questions and brainstorming what to run. We also have voice channels on the Discord that you are free to use during the 12 Hour Challenge.

The speed police have informed me that they plan to take the weekend off to celebrate the historic 10th installment of the challenge. Unfortunately, that means I have no means to enforce any rules. Thus, there won't be any. Maybe next time!
