  10. The Source of Knowledge: Teacher or Student?
  11. I oppose the notion that teachers are the only source for all knowledge. In a traditional classroom, teachers usually stand in front of the class and dictates what students have to learn and how difficult the learning material should be. However, this teaching mechanism restrains students’ potential to learn more and learn at their own paces. To enable students to learn deeper, a common way is to give students more freedom to determine their learning process (Nancy Z., 2017, para. 5). The role for teachers should guide students in their learning but preclude impeding their creativity and activeness in learning. Regarding teachers as a guide is also an important notion to students who take themselves as active learners (“Learning Guide Unit 4 Reading Assignment,” 2018, para. 1). However, in Taiwan, most teachers still adopt traditional teaching methods which hinder students’ potentials for self-learning.
  12. Teachers in Taiwan still mainly represents what’s right while students do not challenge them very often. Teachers hold authority not only in knowledge but also in moral value. In Chinese culture, students don’t challenge their teachers directly, thus empowering teachers to impose any ideas in front of the whole class. This situation might be mitigated when students enter college where professors would value truth and information no matter who contributes it. However, students have been living under teachers’ dominance over years through elementary schools and high schools. It would have made students’ thinking rigid in certain ideologies.
  13. The learning environment for Taiwan students does not include many group discussions but focus on individual learning only. This teaching tradition does not help my learning since I favor discussion more and I can gain more different insights from my peers to further improve my work. If students only work on their own, they will not be aware what they do great and what not. Without reference to their peers' work, they can’t identify their weaknesses in terms of their academic performance. To me, I would advocate more group assignments get involved in our learning environment in Taiwan. It would facilitate my learning greatly.
