43. Gambler Bret Maverick is on his way to a poker tournament wherein half million dollars is at stake. At he needs is $25,000 and he has so far 22. So he goes around trying to collect from people who owe him but it appears they all try to get out of paying him. And he plays poker hoping to come up with the money. Along the way he crosses paths with a man named Angel whom he out plays which makes him dislike Maverick and a woman named Annabelle who is a con woman. So as he continues to go to the tournament and tries to get the rest of the money he needs. Angel's asked by someone to keep Maverick from getting to the tournament and he tries. But Maverick is just too lucky.
44. Bret Maverick is a superb professional poker gambler, as handy with the handgun as he handles the cards, but also a master at avoiding violence by deception. Like all great poker layers, he's on his way to a winner take all championship on Commodore Duvall's riverboat, but first must complete the steep entry sum, collecting debts and gambling. He has most confusing encounters with other gamblers, mainly fake 'Southern belle' Annabelle Bransford and Marshal Zane Cooper, tricksters in his league, and various other stooges and accomplices, such as the bandit Angel and his gang, the Indian Joseph who preys on tourists and one of them, a Russian Archduke. Things are rarely what they seem, as layers of shameless deception are unfolded.
45. This is an extremely enjoyable movie, based on an extremely enjoyable TV show from the 1950s. I was a kid in the 1950s – an advantage I have over some of you poor younger folks – but never mind that.

The casting of this delightful movie is perfection: Mel Gibson is wonderful as the son of the original Bret Maverick (forgiven me if you didn't already know this), and Jodie Foster is sexy as hell playing Annabelle Branford, the lovely female counterpart to Bret Maverick Jr., who keeps our hero on his toes throughout the entire story.

If you haven't seen this film, you won't regret going to Amazon and ordering the DVD of it – like I did. It you do regret it . . . let me know and I'll apologize profusely.
46. Maverick is a Western about a gambler named "Maverick." He has super powers. He can't lose at cards, has super fighting skills, can beat anyone to the draw in gunfights, and has ESP. He's not likable, and has a superiority complex bigger than the muscle bound heroes of other movies. In fact, he begins the movie by spotting some card players money, then beats them in cards, and then beats up an entire town. This makes the viewer wonder why he didn't just beat u the entire town to take their money in the first place. Of course, there's no logic in this movie, and Gibson's portrayal of Maverick gives him an aura of the afore mentioned superiority complex. Since the main character isn't even remotely identifiable, and there's never any challenge, the movie is of no joy to watch.
47. Crammed with such big-name crowd-pleasers as Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and James Garner, Maverick reaches for that Feel Good feeling. It settles for Feel OK.
48. The robber is played by Danny Glover, who was Mel Gibson's partner in the Lethal Weapon series of films (also directed by Richard Donner). When he pulls down the mask they look at each other for a second and a musical sound bit from Lethal Weapon plays as they look at each other and shake their heads. Also when leaving the bank, Danny Glover is heard saying "I'm too old for this shit." which he says (or a variation) of in all 4 Lethal Weapon movies. a5c7b9f00b
