  1. “I am the Carbon Dog,” the dog said, grinning and displaying its fangs. “What do you think? Do you think you can defeat me? Would you like to try...Ness?”
  2. The Ness R. stepped forward without saying a word. His hands hung limply at his sides. He didn't exert himself at all. With no hostility, and very casually, he continued on as if he came here for walks all the time.
  3. “......Hmph......” The Carbon Dog crouched even lower, as if it were preparing to pounce.
  4. The Ness R. kept walking. Kept right on walking. As if he were saying, go ahead, bite me, please.
  5. “Grr......gggrrrrrrr......gggraaaawwrr!”
  6. Like the flip of a switch, the Carbon Dog leapt forward, aiming to swallow the Ness R.'s head in one gulp, but just then......
  7. ––––Shhup.
  8. The Ness R. raised one of his hands. He held the index finger of his right hand straight up, and lifted it to about his chest. He seemed to have no will to fight. He didn't even look at the Carbon Dog. He just held his finger there, apathetically, as if he were only checking the direction of the wind. Then...
  9. ...A moment later...
  10. …...yipe, yipe, yipe!
  11. The Carbon Dog held its muzzle in its paws and began to writhe about on the ground. With a, fwhish, fwisssh, fwissh!, it began to violently snort through its nose. It seemed to be in so much pain that it couldn't stand back up. Its limbs were trembling terribly, and were spread out wide.
  12. “I'm so sorry, are you okay?” Ness reached out his hand as if to try to pet it, but with a whimper, the dog backed away, stumbled, and fell over the edge of the stairway of light...and with a mournful, drawn-out howl, it vanished.
  13. “......What the heck just happened......?”The Ness R. muttered, blankly. “What did I do...?”
  14. “You've become a master,” said the Poo R., with his arms crossed. “You do battle naturally, without need of a plan. You protect yourself without forethought. This is the secret strength of the warrior. It is known as the state of nothingness.”
  15. “Is it something like...choosing “auto mode” on the battle screen in an RPG?” asked the Jeff R.
