10.14.20 PSA Nail Salons: How to prepare for a safe opening

  1. Section 1
  2. Nail salons may now operate indoors. This video shares a partial demonstration of what nail salons should prepare to open safely.

  4. To protect customers and workers, the County has created a set of guidance and mandatory directives as to how salons should operate.
  5.  
  6. First, prior to opening, all businesses must fill and submit a social distancing protocol at covid19prepared.org/[language]. This social distancing protocol must be printed and posted on the door where it is easy to see, employees must also be given a copy and business owners must provide training to their employees.

  8. Second, all businesses are required to read and follow the mandated personal care directive issued by Santa Clara County at the link below sccgov.org/cv19order. There are special things to note:

  10. Section 2 Customer arrivals
  11. a. Ensure customers know to book an appointment to give your business time to prepare
  12. b. All waiting rooms, reception areas, common areas, and lounges should be closed
  13. i. Remove all chairs, amenities, product samples in those areas
  14. ii. Customers should be informed to not arrive more than 5 minutes prior to their appointment.
  15. iii. Remind them to bring their face covering (Betty holds up face covering)
  16. c. Set up a contactless check-in and payment system.
  17. d. Employees should also verbally screen customers for COVID symptoms upon arrival
  18. iv. Additionally, have they experienced symptoms or had a positive test within the last 14 days
  19. v. If they say yes, reschedule their appointment. Their appointment should be at least 14 days out.

  21. 2.) The business must also keep diligent records, which include:
  22. a. Client’s name, phone number, email address
  23. b. Date, time, duration of client’s visit
  24. c. The name and contact info of any worker who serviced the client
  25.  
  26. Section 3
  27. 1.) Workstations must be set up to maintain social distancing
  28. a. Use physical barriers or markers to ensure no person works, sits, or stands withing 6 ft of any other person, except for the employee providing service.
  29. b. Post signage reminding clients to stay 6 ft away from people except the employee providing service, to wash their hands, or to use hand sanitizer.
  30. 2.) Employees will also be required to wear Person Protective Equipment, often referred to as “PPE”
  31. a. Employers must obtain, provide at no cost to the employee, and require all workers to use the following PPE when conducting services:
  32. i. Face coverings
  33. 1. N95 Are highly recommended for all personal care service workers
  34. ii. Eye protection
  35. 1. Such as glasses, goggles, or face shield
  36. iii. Disposable or washable smock or cape that is disposed of or laundered between clients
  37. iv. Disposable gloves when performing services for which gloves are needed
  38. 1. Ensure gloves are changed between clients
  39. b. As a reminder, all customers and employees must wear face coverings at all times while in the facility
  40.  
  41. Section 4
  42. 1.) The business must also ensure proper sanitizing measures are taken
  43. a. Workers must wash their hands immediately before and after services
  44. b. Workers should also not use their cellphones while providing services.
  45. c. Regularly disinfect all high-touch areas and surfaces following the CDC guidelines
  46. d. Disinfect all furniture and equipment used to provide personal care services before and after each client receives services.

  48. ii. Use disposable liner and dispose after each use for furniture and equipment that cannot be cleaned
  49. e. After each use, change out all items that can be cleaned, and replace all items that can be discarded, except for the worker’s eye protection

  51. Section 5
  52. 1.) Additional requirements facilities must follow
  53. a. Nail-care services must install barriers between clients and manicurists. As well as install physical barriers wherever else feasible between the customer and employee.
  54. b. Windows and doors should be opened where possible
  55. c. Wherever possible, move all customer transactions, consultations, and services outdoors.
  56. d. Dual services are not allowed since that requires close contact with more one worker at a time.
  57. e. Nail-care services must not permit clients to touch items in nail polish display area, and must not permit clients to test or otherwise handle nail polish
