  3. CARMEN MIRANDA'S GHOST 01
  4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5p8YhhaVlA
  5.
  6. Carmen Miranda's ghost is haunting Space Station Three.
  7. Half the staff has seen her, plus the Portmaster and me.
  8. And if you think we've had too much of Cookie's homemade rum,
  9. Just tell me where those basket-hats of fruit keep coming from.
  10.
  11. Don't go down to the cargo-bay when there's no ship in dock.
  12. You just might hear maracas clack and get a nasty shock
  13. And if you hear a rumba-beat, don't pass the messroom door;
  14. You just might see a tangerine come rolling down the floor.
  15.
  16. We sometimes catch a glimpse of her, by station night or day,
  17. But when we try to catch her, she just laughs and fades away.
  18. The station's chief headshrinker takes his notes and drains his cup.
  19. We get rotated often, but she still keeps showing up.
  20.
  21. We don't know why we're haunted here, or why it's her that haunts.
  22. We've got a betting-pool for all who wonder what she wants.
  23. The best odds say she likes the rhythm of the station's drive;
  24. They didn't have phase-generators while she was alive.
  25.
  26. Carmen Miranda's ghost is haunting Space Station Three.
  27. Not that we're complaining, since the fresh fruit all comes free.
  28. But now and then we wonder what it means for the human race
  29. That ghosts of generations past are taking off for space.
  30.
  31. DAWSON'S CHRISTIAN 02
  32. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w34fSnJNP-4
  33.
  34. Jayme Dawson was the Captain of the Christian and her crew,
  35. And he flew and fought the Christian in the War of '82.
  36. Now the Christian was the tightest ship 'tween here and Charlemagne,
  37. And the crew of Jayme Dawson was the same.
  38.
  39. On patrol in sector seven, keeping watch on Barber's sun,
  40. They were jumped by three light cruisers though they wern't a match for one.
  41. As they came to general quarters and they sent out the alarm,
  42. Dawson's crew was sure they'd finally bought the farm.
  43.
  44. No one living saw that battle though the fleet was quick to leave.
  45. When they reached the site they found a scene no sane man could believe.
  46. Dead in space lay three light cruisers, cut to ribbons all around,
  47. But no sign of Dawson's Christian could be found.
  48.
  49. There are stories of the Dutchman, the Celeste and Barnham's Pride,
  50. There are stories of the Horseman and the Lady at his side,
  51. But the tale that chills my spirit, more because I know it's true,
  52. Is the tale of Jayme Dawson and his crew,
  53. Yes, the tale of Dawson's Christian and her crew.
  54.
  55. (instrumental interlude)
  56.
  57. I was second mate on Hera's Dream, a freighter of the line.
  58. We were shipping precious metals to the colony on Nine.
  59. It was on the second watch of that most uneventful flight,
  60. When the pirate ships appeared out of the night.
  61.
  62. Now to me there was no question, for they had us four to one,
  63. And you can't fight dirty pirates when your freighter has no gun.
  64. So we stood by to be boarded by a party yet unseen,
  65. When another ship appeared upon our screen.
  66.
  67. First we thought it just a pirate, but the vector was all wrong.
  68. Then we thought it might be rescue, but the signal wasn't strong.
  69. When she didn't answer hailing, we all felt an unknown dread,
  70. For we saw her shields were up and glowing red.
  71.
  72. Now the courage of that single ship is shown by very few,
  73. But we never knew a ship could fly the way the stranger flew.
  74. Never fearing guns or numbers, like a tiger to its meat,
  75. The stranger then attacked the pirate fleet.
  76.
  77. And the strangers beams burned brighter than all beams I'd seen before.
  78. And the strangers shields were harder than the heart of any whore.
  79. As the battle rent the eather, while we watched and shook our heads,
  80. The pirate ships were cut to bloody shreds.
  81. The pirate ships were cut to bloody shreds.
  82.
  83. Just as quickly as it started then the fighting was all done.
  84. For the pirate fleet was shattered and the stranger's ship had won.
  85. Though we tried to call and thank her, not an answer could we draw,
  86. Then she dropped her shields and this is what we saw.
  87.
  88. There were thirty holes clear through her and a gash along one side,
  89. And we knew that when it happened, that no crew were left alive.
  90. For the markings all said Christian, deep inside us each one knew,
  91. 'Twas the tomb of Jayme Dawson and his crew.
  92.
  93. Now instead of flying off, the stranger then began to fade,
  94. First the hull, and then the bulkheads as we cowered there afraid,
  95. For as the Christian disappeared, the last to slip from view,
  96. Were the bones of Jayme Dawson and his crew.
  97. Yes, the bones of Jayme Dawson and his crew.
  98.
  99. There are stories of the Dutchman, the Celeste and Barnham's Pride,
  100. There are stories of the Horseman and the Lady at his side,
  101. But the tale that chills my spirit, and I swear to God it's true,
  102. Is the tale of Jayme Dawson and his crew,
  103. Yes, the tale of Dawson's Christian and her crew.

  108. BOMBER 04
  109.
  110. NEEDS REFINING
  111. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlkH687M4YM
  112.
  113. Sleek and clean, the death machines stand ready on the decks
  114. Beside them men who fight in them run through their final checks
  115. ________, their lives are moved by hate
  116. For those who fly make others die and never touch their fate
  117.
  118. (chorus)
  119. He just flies the bomber,
  120. He never sees their eyes when the hell comes down
  121. He just flies the bomber...
  122.
  123. Inbound trip with outer slip, the shuttle drops them free
  124. Set the track for their attack, the backup coms agree
  125. Now trim the jet and don't forget to plot in the return
  126. It's time to go, for down below's a planet that was burned
  127.
  128. (chorus)
  129.
  130. Now make the run so quick it's done, as death screams towards the ground
  131. Moving fast, they're so far past, they never hear the sound
  132. A final turn is from the stern, the watch the mushrooms grow
  133. Fill the night with deadly light and kill the world below
  134.
  135. (chorus)
  136.
  137. Back aboard the shuttle, there'll be time enough to think what they have done
  138. He'll fight their antiseptic war, won't leave them with a place that they can run
  139. Nowhere to run!
  140.
  141. And there's no deep untroubled sleep for one with such a debt
  142. The guilt alone will not a atone, nor let a soul forget
  143. Those cries and screams, they're not just dreams, imagination, lies
  144. God damn the war, the BITCH you whore, you killers from the skies
  145.
  146. (chorus)
  147.
  148.
  149.
  150. SOME KIND OF HERO 05
  151. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WDRxtd-2dQ
  152.
  153. Will you do me a favor, piano man, please--
  154. I want you to write me a song.
  155. They call me the hero of Antelope's Run,
  156. And I gotta show 'em they're wrong.
  157.
  158. You see, it all started a week ago
  159. In the bar down on Corridor Three.
  160. There was nobody there but us regular bums:
  161. Two losers, the barman, and me.
  162.
  163. Floppin' up booze in the north corner booth
  164. Was the old man they call Cap'n Jed.
  165. Cause he owned a tramp freighter, the old Antelope--
  166. A ship, that like him, was half-dead.
  167.
  168. Now Molly, they say, was a crack pilot once,
  169. A gal with a brilliant career.
  170. But then she started dopin' on Regulos One
  171. And finally washed out down here.
  172.
  173. And me--well, I wanted the navy bad
  174. But it seems that they didn't want me.
  175. So I stopped chasing stars, started sweeping up bars
  176. For bed and board and all my drinks free.
  177.
  178. It was quiet that night with the docks closed down;
  179. There was nothing due in for a week.
  180. Not a ship was in port but the old Antelope
  181. When the red alert started to shriek.
  182.
  183. The whole station shook like a hurt living thing
  184. Then the lights dimmed and faded away.
  185. The the gravity went, and the air pumps cut out,
  186. And the bartender started to pray.
  187.
  188. "Ah, stow that bilch. Head for the Antelope, now!"
  189. Jed's voice cut the dark like a knife.
  190. "The station reactor's gone critical low,
  191. So run to the docks for your life."
  192.
  193. When we got to the docks we found waiting out there
  194. Every soul that had been left alive.
  195. They begged with their eyes for poor old Captain Jed
  196. To tell 'em all how to survive.
  197.
  198. "Break out the suits," said the Captain to them,
  199. "Cause it's dark and it's airless and cold.
  200. But I swear I can get you all out of here safe,
  201. Pack in to the Antelope's hold."
  202.
  203. "Molly," he asked, "Can you navigate?" "Aye,"
  204. She said, "who do we have for a crew?"
  205. "The Antelope needs only three hands," he said,
  206. "And I think our young friend here will do."
  207.
  208. The confident look that he flashed at me then
  209. Made my heart turn over with pride.
  210. I never once thought about backin' away--
  211. I think I would rather have died.
  212.
  213. Two-hundred alive in the Antelope's hold
  214. And the Captain and Molly and me;
  215. We slammed the lock just as the station blew wide,
  216. Jed hit the main jets to get free.
  217.
  218. Now that kind of g-force is rough on the heart,
  219. Too much for his ticker to take.
  220. So when we came around and we saw how he lay
  221. We knew Captain Jed wouldn't wake.
  222.
  223. So I took the com and the engineer boards
  224. And Molly took helm and the nav
  225. With the manuals spread out all over the deck
  226. And a mind for what they didn't have.
  227.
  228. She worked like a comp at that crazy machine
  229. While her hands shook like grass in the breeze.
  230. But her skill was still sharp and she jumped us three times
  231. Never minding the shakes and DT's.
  232.
  233. Three jumps made clean--only one more was left!
  234. When the ships alarm started to blast.
  235. Her old worn-out seals had come loose in the stress;
  236. We were losing our heat and air fast.
  237.
  238. On the bridge, there was only one vacuum suit left--
  239. Well, they say Lady Luck has gone blind.
  240. "Heads or tails," was the question I started to ask,
  241. When I felt myself hit from behind.
  242.
  243. When I came to again I was sealed in the suit,
  244. Molly belted down tight in her chair.
  245. With her hands on the console, a smile on her lips,
  246. And the ice on her face and her hair.
  247.
  248. "Here's the instructions to get us all home,"
  249. I saw she had left on the screen.
  250. "If any old shipmates should ask after Moll,
  251. Tell 'em--she finally died clean."
  252.
  253. I made the last jump just like she told me too,
  254. And I brought the ship in like she'd said.
  255. They call me a hero, now, for what I did--
  256. But they don't mention Molly and Jed.
  257.
  258. So write me that song, now, piano man, please,
  259. And sing it out often and loud.
  260. So they all know the story of one kind of hero--
  261. The kind that makes everyone proud.
  262.
  263. But some kind of heroes are lunkheads like me
  264. Who only do things that they're told.
  265. And some kind of heroes are out for the glory--
  266. They're heroes on purpose, and cold.
  267.
  268. Some become heroes for bravery, sure,
  269. And some because all hope is lost.
  270. But a few are the heroes like Molly and Jed
  271. Who give without asking the cost.

  276. GUARDIANS 07
  277. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqU7W8LdRd4
  278.
  279. He wasn't quite sure what went wrong,
  280. Just that the engine blew
  281. And flung him hard against the wall
  282. And him the only crew.
  283. He felt like he'd been broke in half
  284. He passed out twice from pain
  285. And when he heard the voices
  286. He was sure he'd gone insane.
  287.
  288. Just two of them at first it was
  289. And then a dozen more.
  290. He blinked to see two women kneel
  291. Beside him on the floor.
  292. He thought they might be angels
  293. But they weren't like angels much;
  294. No wings, no robes, just plain grey spacer
  295. Coveralls and such.
  296.
  297. "You're not dead yet, my friend
  298. And it's not quite your time to go,"
  299. The first one said "Now look,
  300. Your rescue beacon's down below
  301. Ed says that there's another ship,
  302. Not far away at all.
  303. You still have two good arms my friend
  304. So grit your teeth and crawl."
  305.
  306. They winked out then, the pain clamped down
  307. He thought he'd move no more.
  308. Another one appeared
  309. And sat beside him on the floor.
  310. "Come on, tovarisch," this one urged
  311. "You'll make it, I don't doubt.
  312. Show me some of these Yankee guts
  313. I've heard so much about."
  314.
  315. It seemed to take eternity
  316. To crawl from here to there
  317. The pain at least a hundred times
  318. Was more than he could bear
  319. But every time he'd start to quit,
  320. Lie down, give up and die
  321. Another would appear beside him
  322. Urging him to try.
  323.
  324. He reached the beacon in a daze
  325. Of fever, mist and pain.
  326. He hit the activator
  327. And he saw them once again
  328. "Remember friend," the woman said
  329. "When death is closing fast,
  330. It's then you try your hardest
  331. For the darkness will not last."
  332.
  333. He passed out then, the rescue came
  334. They brought him safely home,
  335. And he forgot it all
  336. Until he got to Luna dome.
  337. And passed beneath the hologram
  338. That stands above the door
  339. And recognized those faces there
  340. He'd seen them all before.
  341.
  342. Gus and Ed and Roger
  343. Made him hold to hope and try.
  344. The Russians, Ronald, Christa too,
  345. They wouldn't let him die.
  346. He knew whose words had saved him
  347. And he knew that in the end
  348. He'd go to join their company
  349. And greet them as a friend.

  356.
  357. Oh, what's the use of this looting and pillaging
  358. Swinging my ray-gun through blood, guts, and gore?
  359. Raping and robbing and boozing grow boring
  360. The life of a pirate's no fun anymore
  361. No fun anymore, no fun anymore
  362. It's only a job, it's no fun anymore
  363.
  364. Always the same: all the planning and ambushing
  365. Pouncing, attacking, and hauling away
  366. The whoring and boozing and passing out afterwards
  367. It's getting monotonous, day after day
  368. Day after day, day after day
  369. It's boring as Hell, fighting day after day
  370.
  371. I've bounced in more beds than there's hairs on my you-know-what
  372. I've bred enough bastards to crew my own ship
  373. I've never had time to stay home and raise one of 'em
  374. So what will I have when I've emptied my clip?
  375. Emptied my clip, emptied my clip
  376. Who'll call me "Dad" when I've emptied my clip?
  377.
  378. I've got an itch to go do something different
  379. Get a good farm and a nice buxom bride
  380. Raise some tall crops and a lot of fat babies
  381. Complacency's one sin that I've never tried!
  382. I've never tried, I've never tried
  383. Playing Good Citizen I've never tried
  384.
