- Breath of Fire
- Platform: Snes / SFC
- Released (d.m.y):
- 03.04.1993 (J)
- 10.08.1994 (NA)
- Based on: NTSC-J-version (SHVC-BF)
- - The game doesn't track your play time. Consider tracking it manually.
- - Technically, physical damage is (ATP/(target DFP*x/100))r, where x
- depends on how far you are into the game (10 initially, 8 after crossing
- the Windia bridge, 6 after fighting Muscle, 4 after fighting Tentacles,
- 2 after obtaining the Shounindama, and 1 after Nina rejoins).
- - A more practical formula (for damage dealt) would be ATP*Def/xr.
- - Def is 100/DFP.
- - r is the random variable: 0,8; 0,9; 1,0; 1,1; or 1,2.
- - Critical hits deal double damage.
- - A subject deals 1,3125x physical damage when below 1/8 HP.
- - Three characters are able to counter physical attacks: Ryuu (1/16),
- Danku (1/8) and Mogu (5/32). Counters can occur even if an attack is
- evaded.
- - Defending reduces physical damage by 22% in the front row and 30% in
- the back row. Enemies can't defend.
- - Being in the back row reduces physical damage received by an amount
- that varies depending on the attack (such as 16% or 4%). Physical damage
- dealt is also reduced by making the 1,1 and 1,2 random variables less
- likely to be used, thus reducing damage output by roughly 10%. Ranged
- weapons, such as bows and boomerangs, are unaffected. Enemies don't have
- rows.
- - Stats:
- Tsuyosa | Base ATP (Kougekiryoku)
- Stamina | Base DFP (Bougyoryoku)
- Subayasa | Base Act (Koudouryoku), Magic Defense
- Kashikosa | Base Wisdom (Chiryoku), Magic Defense
- Un no Yosa | Base Fate (Unsei) (critical hit rate)
- - The above five stats max out at 255.
- - ATP and DFP max out at 511.
- - ACT = Agility - Equipment weight. Act determines turn order (with no
- random variation), evade rate, and chance to escape. When escaping, the
- game only checks the Act of the first character (alive or not).
- - Wisdom affects the hit rate of status ailments.
- - Magic Defense (Tokubouryoku) = Act/4+Wisdom*0,75. Magic Defense only
- comes into play when defending. Specifically, it multiplies magical damage
- by (515-MDF)/600.
- - Magic deals fixed base damage. When magic is used during battle, it
- doesn't actually display the name of the spell, but rather it describes
- the effect.
- - Characters casting healing or support magic will act first during a
- given round.
- - Hitting an elemental weakness increases damage by 50%. The elements
- are: Fire (F), Ice (I), Thunder (T), Light (L), Dark (D), Anti-Air (A),
- and 'Crush' (C).
- - I've only listed elemental weaknesses (W:) for bosses.
- - Most enemies indeed have an elemental affinity, in which case their
- physical attacks and special attacks carry that element.
- - Equipment that provides elemental resistance will reduce damage from
- the element by 25%. However, different pieces of equipment cannot provide
- protection to multiple elements simultaneously, as the element check
- processes equipment in order of shield, body armor, and helmet, and the
- first element detected is the only one that counts.
- × Equipment can only provide resistance to Fire, Ice, Thunder, and Light.
- - Inventory: 48 (later 63) slots | Storage: 126 slots.
- - You can carry at most 999 999 Zenny. This is also the max amount you
- can deposit to storage.
- - The game's game over policy is the "golden parachute;" when you die,
- you lose half of the money you're carrying and end up at the last save
- point you used. If you can't return to that save point, you'll end up
- at some other location.
- - Level up gains are randomized to an extent.
- - The game doesn't tell you how much Exp is needed for the next level.
- - Exp is equally divided among all living party members, including the
- ones in the reserve.
- - You receive an Experience and Zenny bonus if you finish a battle in
- fewer than 7 rounds (at most a 50% bonus for a single round victory).
- - Enemies in BoF1 have no equipment drops whatsoever.

- You can't get it later.
- - There's only a small, limited number of stat boosters to be found, and
- they only increase a stat by 1.
- - Buy a Kawa no Kata-ate. You'll get a good weapon in the first dungeon,
- so no need to buy one.
- - Buy a bunch of Herbs and a few Antidotes and level up before you head
- north to Kantabel.
- × A Ringo heals 60 HP vs. the 50 HP of a Yakusou, but it costs so much
- more, making it a terrible waste of your money.
- - You can rest by talking to the old woman.
- - In the settings, you can change the Confirm and Cancel buttons (I use
- Y for Confirm) as well as set hotkeys for different sub-menus (or just

- - After a battle, there's a chance that animals will spawn in the over-
- world. You'll soon be able to hunt them for healing items. Even before
- that, it's possible to kill deers if you get them cornered and just wait
- (I guess they die from a heart attack or something). Boars can also be
- killed in a similar way, but you need to trap them in a dead end, which
- you often won't even have a chance to do.
- - Ryu's field ability is fishing (which is mostly done in wells found
- on the overworld), but it's not very useful until later in the game.

- - Kudamono: 40 HP | Sakana: 10 HP
- - This is the first time you have access to the storage (azukariya).
- Drop off any money and items you won't need immediately.
- - You probably won't have the money to buy the Kusarikatabira, but you
- can fairly easily fix that by heading to the cave west. The guards
- won't let you farther into the cave, but you still have enough room to
- get into encounters. You can easily end the battles in one round with
- the Earth Key. Make sure you sort your inventory, so that it's easily
- available at the top of the list.
- - De-equip your Kote for Nina. If you already sold your Ki no Tate,
- she'll have to make do with the Kawa no Tate (and, later, Bandage).
- - Once you're prepared, head inside the castle, and talk to the queen.
- After some dialog, you'll find yourself in control of Nina while Ryuu
- is taking a break.
- - Her default equipment is quite modest (get used to that), which is
- exactly why I told you to buy that stuff from Nanai (Iron Rapier,
- Hairband), although it's not that big a deal if you missed it.
- - Her initial spells include: Ririfu, Katekuto, Yakuri.
- - Note that Nina starts off in the back row.
- - Nina levels up much faster than other characters between Lv29-46.

- - Two nameless Windia soldiers will join your party here. They are only
- temporary, so don't bother getting them any new equipment or anything.
- They won't even gain any levels.
- - Heishi 2 is the fastest of the three characters (at least until Nina
- gets a level and a new armor), so he's the one who should be using the
- Earth Key initially.
- - You'll need the Tekkouseki to obtain another key item a little later
- in the game.

- - Note that you can eat the mushrooms here. Red ones are good (+10 HP),
- yellow ones are bad (-10 HP). They won't even despawn; you can use them
- as many times as you want.
- - The Bushin no Tamashii is completely hidden behind the very first tree.
- - One of the Herbs is also completely hidden behind a tree (near the Bandage).
- - Next up is the Miso no Moto (again completely hidden), which unfortunately
- isn't close to anything in particular other than one of the crossroads.
- - And, finally, the Subayakusou is hidden behind one of the trees near the
- exit.
- - The Datenshi no Kiss can be used during battle and has a chance of
- causing instant death. You should probably just sell them for 100 Z each.

- Bosses: Teshita Uzoo, Teshita Muzoo, Mahoutsukai
- - You'll find two healing springs on the first floor.
- - You'll fight Uzoo on the first floor and Muzoo on the third.
- - On the second floor, go clockwise (to find two items), then counter-
- clockwise. On the third, go counter-clockwise, then clockwise. Get the
- last item on the third floor (by the four holes), then jump down the
- right hole on the second floor.
- - The Bannouyaku fully restores a single character (dead or alive).
- These are ideal for healing AP, but if you're in a sticky situation,
- you can certainly use one for reviving as well (Nina can start reviving
- characters with full HP once she hits Lv34). You'll never be able to
- buy these, but you'll find a bunch of them on the field, and there are
- a few enemies that can drop them.
- [Boss: Uzoo]
- - 113+ 7 HP, 185% Def, 280 xp, 200 Z
- - Casting Giigan on the soldiers helps speed things up.
- [Boss: Muzoo]
- - 202+28 HP, 156% Def, 280 xp, 200 Z
- - There's no way you can win the first or second battle with the wizard.
- Once the event is over, you'll switch back to Ryuu, who will get a ride
- to the top of the tower. You'll also be briefly assisted by Heishi 3.
- - The Saber is in the same room as the wizard. Grab it before fighting him.
- The Saber hits all targets, so it's a good choice for normal battles. For
- bosses, you should switch to a single-target weapon, as they're usually
- stronger.
- [Boss: Mahoutsukai]
- - 169+11 HP, 417% Def, 1000 xp, 700 Z
- - The Gedokuyaku doesn't actually show up in your inventory.

- With Maniro in the lead, approach the counter from behind, press Confirm,

- who will offer to either buy or sell an item (or items). When you refuse
- an offer, there's a chance they'll give you a better offer. At best, this
- can happen twice per customer.
- - The starting price is always 60% of what it would cost in a regular
- store (although, as I've mentioned, very few of these items are available
- in stores). You can haggle it to as low as 35%, but this rarely happens.
- - When selling an item, the initial offer is always 50% of what it would
- sell for in a regular store. In other words, don't bother selling anything
- here. It's not a good idea.
- - It will take quite a while to get everything you need. In order to speed

- - You can use the Thunder Rapier during battle to deal 80 pod to a single

- - The Tenshi no Muneate is close to the best armor for Nina and Bleu.

- - The Evil Stick restores Bleu's AP by 3 whenever she attacks.
- - The Hyouga no Yoroi is pretty much the best armor for Ox. The Daichi
- no Yoroi may be 1 point lighter, but this one also give him some
- elemental resistance. You might want to hang on to Ox's old Earth Mail,
- so Mogu can use it for Thunder resistance (provided he has a non-elemental

- it's nothing a quick reviving spell or item can't fix, so it's really
- not a big deal. You can encounter Devil Ghosts again in the first half

- - The Kobito no Yumi (150/1) is Gilliam's second strongest weapon. One-handed.

- Items (nc): Koutei no Tsurugi (Unique), Hoshikudaki no Tsuchi (Unique)
- Bosses: Goda, Judas, Miria A/B/C
- Enemies: HP Def Exp Z
- Devil Ghost | 2400 | 125% | 840 | 200 |
- Gargoyle | 2200 | 100% | 1200 | 400 |
- Homunculus | 3500 | 294% | 2520 |1200 |
- Jelly Golem | 3000 | 143% | 1290 | 540 |
- - Again, the Devil Ghost can cast Baruharaa (400 pod).
- - There are no save points in the final dungeon, I'm afraid. Then again,
- it's not that long or difficult. Although, there is that big room after
- Goda that's cloned three times for a total of 4 'instances.' They're
- basically identical. They all lead to the same place, and there doesn't
- seem to be any items, so don't bother going through each of them.
- [Boss: Goda]
- - 5504 + 5496 HP, 45% Def, W:C, 6000 xp, 6000 Z
- - Goda doesn't use any magic at all.
- - When you finally reach Judas, he'll ask if you'd be interested in
- joining him. If you accept his offer, you can serve as his goon for a
- while, which means you'll be fighting a bunch of fixed encounters for
- his entertainment.
- [Boss: Judas]
- - 21 876 + 3124 HP, 42% Def, W:D, 8000 xp, 8000 Z
- - His two most dangerous attacks are BoltX (400 pod, always used on the
- first character) and Rub. He doesn't use either one often, though.
- - I wouldn't bother with Nina's magic resisting spells (Makato, Mainama,
- Katomana), since they wear off after just one spell.
- - Once the battle is over, check behind the right pillar to find the
- Hoshikudaki no Tsuchi, and the area left of Judas's throne for the
- Koutei no Tsurugi, Ryuu's ultimate weapon (255/1)(although the Ankoku
- no Knife can still deal a little more damage thanks to the elemental
- variable).
- - You can use the hammer in battle to deal 400 pod to all enemies.
- - You can use the Koutei no Tsurugi in battle to deal 180 pod to all
- enemies.
- - At this point, it is a *very* good idea to leave and save your game.
- Only the final boss remains (unless you still have Dragon Shrines left
- that you haven't done).
- - And, yeah, if you want levels, fighting Fireheads and Orc Masters in
- the Teito region is probably your best option. The encounter rate is
- pretty high by default, so using the Tight Mini or Gorgeous Mail won't
- make a big difference. Either way, you can get about 50k in 30 minutes.
- After Lv50, each level requires 50-70k xp.
- - When you first talk to the Goddess, you can get your party fully healed.
- [Boss: Miria]
- - B: 28 000 HP, 40% Def, W:D
- - C: 31 000 HP, 19,6% Def, W:D
- - In order to see the good ending, you'll have to use Saigo no Chikara,
- so that you can fight her true form (C). Don't forget that Saigo can
- only be used when all characters are alive, and Danku isn't fused.
- - B: She only uses normal attacks and Suurei (100 pod to all).
- - C: She only uses normal attacks and Soru c (70 pod to all). Her ATP
- is 510, so her physical attacks are a concern to characters with lower
- HP and DFP. Eg. with 300 DFP, you take 170 pod.
- - Saigo no Chikara will indeed trivialize the battle, so I suggest you
- try to beat her without it. If you do use it, you should have Ryu equip
- the Oreta Ken, as it triggers a special guest appearance during the
- ending.
- End of file.
