- Breath of Fire
- Platform: Snes / SFC
- Released (d.m.y):
- 03.04.1993 (J)
- 10.08.1994 (NA)
- Based on: NTSC-J-version (SHVC-BF)
- - The game doesn't track your play time. Consider tracking it manually.
- - Technically, physical damage is (ATP/(target DFP*x/100))r, where x
- depends on how far you are into the game (10 initially, 8 after crossing
- the Windia bridge, 6 after fighting Muscle, 4 after fighting Tentacles,
- 2 after obtaining the Shounindama, and 1 after Nina rejoins).
- - A more practical formula would be (ATP*Def/x)r.
- - Def is 100/DFP.
- - r is the random variable: 0,8; 0,9; 1,0; 1,1; or 1,2.
- - +1 is added at the end unless the random variable was 1,0.
- - Critical hits deal double damage.
- - A subject deals 1,3125x physical damage when below 1/8 HP.
- - Three characters are able to counter physical attacks: Ryuu (1/16),
- Danku (1/8) and Mogu (5/32). Counters can occur even if an attack is
- evaded.
- - Defending reduces physical damage by 22% in the front row and 30% in
- the back row. Enemies can't defend.
- - Being in the back row reduces physical damage received by an amount
- that varies depending on the attack (such as 16% or 4%). Physical damage
- dealt is also reduced by making the 1,1 and 1,2 random variables less
- likely to be used, thus reducing damage output by roughly 10%. Ranged
- weapons, such as bows and boomerangs, are unaffected. While enemies also
- have rows, there are only four enemies that are in the back row (mainly
- archers).
- - Stats:
- Tsuyosa (Str) | Base ATP (Kougekiryoku)
- Stamina (Stm) | Base DFP (Bougyoryoku)
- Subayasa (Agi) | Base Act (Koudouryoku), Magic Defense
- Kashikosa (Int) | Base Wisdom (Chiryoku), Magic Defense
- Un no Yosa (Luck)| Base Fate (Unsei) (critical hit rate)
- - The above five stats max out at 255. ATP and DFP max out at 511. HP
- and damage max out at 999.
- - Act = Agility - Equipment weight. Act determines turn order (with no
- random variation), evade rate, and chance to escape. When escaping, the
- game only checks the Act of the first character (alive or not).
- - Wisdom affects the hit rate of status ailments.
- - Magic Defense (Tokubouryoku) = Act/4+Wisdom*0,75. Magic Defense only
- comes into play when defending. Specifically, it multiplies magical damage
- by (515-MDF)/600.
- - Magic deals fixed base damage. When magic is used during battle, it
- doesn't actually display the name of the spell, but rather it describes
- the effect.
- - Support spells like Katekuto and Giigan increase a stat by a fixed
- number, and the effect doesn't stack.
- - Characters casting healing or support magic will act first during a
- given round.
- - Hitting an elemental weakness increases damage by 50%. The elements
- are: Fire (F), Ice (I), Thunder (T), Light (L), Dark (D), Anti-Air (A),
- and Armor-Piercing (P).
- - All enemies have an elemental affinity, and their physical attacks
- carry that element. That element is also their weakness. However, with
- no option to switch gear mid-battle, your ability to exploit the varying
- elemental weaknesses of normal enemies is limited. You'll mainly want
- to take note of the elemental weaknesses (W:) of bosses.
- - Equipment that provides elemental resistance will reduce damage from
- the element by 25%. However, different pieces of equipment cannot provide
- protection to multiple elements simultaneously, as the element check
- processes equipment in order of shield, body armor, and helmet, and the
- first element detected is the only one that counts.
- - Equipment can only provide resistance to Fire, Ice, Thunder, and Light.
- - Inventory: 48 (later 63) slots | Storage: 126 slots.
- - You can carry at most 999 999 Zenny. This is also the max amount you
- can deposit to storage.
- - Enemies, including bosses, have a visible HP bar. It's not entirely
- accurate for bosses, however, as nearly all bosses gain a second wind
- upon first reaching 0 HP. When this happens, a certain figure is added
- to both their current and max HP.
- - The game's game over policy is the "golden parachute;" when you die,
- you lose half of the money you're carrying and end up at the last save
- point you used. If you can't return to that save point, you'll end up
- at some other location.
- - Level up gains are randomized to an extent.
- - The game doesn't tell you how much Exp is needed for the next level.
- - Exp is equally divided among all living party members, including the
- ones in the reserve.
- - You receive an Experience and Zenny bonus if you finish a battle in
- fewer than 7 rounds (at most a 50% bonus for a single round victory).
- - Enemies in BoF1 have no equipment drops whatsoever.

- - Grab the Stamina no Moto from the drawer as soon as you gain control.
- You can't get it later.
- - There's only a small, limited number of stat boosters to be found, and
- they only increase a stat by 1.
- - Buy a Kawa no Kata-ate. You'll get a good weapon, helm, and shield in
- the first dungeon, so no need to buy those. Buy 3 Boros, though. They'll
- come into play later.
- - Buy a bunch of Herbs and a few Antidotes and level up before you head
- north to Kantabel.
- × A Ringo heals 60 HP vs. the 50 HP of a Yakusou, but it costs so much
- more, making it a terrible waste of your money.
- - You can rest by talking to the old woman.
- - In the settings, you can change the Confirm and Cancel buttons (I use
- Y for Confirm) as well as set hotkeys for different sub-menus (or just
- the main menu). I set Menu to X, Inventory to L, Magic to R and Switch
- to A.
- - You can leave the menu instantly by pressing the Menu button.

- You can cancel it by pressing Cancel.
- - After a battle, there's a chance that animals will spawn in the over-
- world. You'll soon be able to hunt them for healing items. Even before
- that, it's possible to kill deers if you get them cornered and just wait
- (I guess they die from a heart attack or something). Boars can also be
- killed in a similar way, but you need to trap them in a dead end, which
- you often won't even have a chance to do.
- - If you manage to take out a white deer, you can sell the Shiroshika
- no Tsuno for 1500 Z. You could certainly use the money.
- - Ryu's field ability is fishing (which is mostly done in wells found
- on the overworld), but it's not very useful until later in the game.

- - You probably won't have the money to buy the Kusarikatabira, but you
- can fairly easily fix that by heading to the cave west. The guards
- won't let you farther into the cave, but you still have enough room to
- get into encounters. You could easily end the battles in one round with
- the Earth Key, if you choose to use it. If so, make sure you sort your
- inventory, so that it's easily available at the top of the list.
- - De-equip your Kote for Nina. If you already sold your Ki no Tate,
- she'll have to make do with the Kawa no Tate (and, later, Bandage).
- - Once you're prepared, head inside the castle, and talk to the queen.
- After some dialog, you'll find yourself in control of Nina while Ryuu
- is taking a break.
- - Her default equipment is quite modest (get used to that), which
- is exactly why I told you to buy that stuff in Nanai (Iron Rapier,
- Hairband), although it's not that big a deal if you missed it.
- - Her initial spells include: Ririfu, Katekuto, Yakuri.

- - The Bannouyaku fully restores a single character (dead or alive).
- These are ideal for healing AP, but if you're in a sticky situation,
- you can certainly use one for reviving as well (Nina can start reviving
- characters with full HP once she hits Lv34). You'll never be able to
- buy these, but you'll find a bunch of them on the field, and there are
- a few enemies that can drop them.
- [Boss: Uzoo]
- - 113+ 7 HP, 1,85 Def, 64 ATP, 25 Act, 280 xp, 200 Z

- - Might want to cast Katekuto (DFP +20). The effect doesn't stack.
- - Once you're in the other tower, have the soldiers switch back to their
- default gear and also have them equip the Boros I told you to buy. Nina
- should replace the Kote with the Bandage.
- - There's no way you can win the first or second battle with the wizard.
- Once the event is over, you'll switch back to Ryuu, who will get a ride
- to the top of the tower. You'll also be briefly assisted by Heishi 3. He
- leaves the party just before you enter the wizard's room. Equip him with
- the last Boro, so you can sell his armor.
- - The Saber is in the same room as the wizard. Grab it before fighting him.
- The Saber hits all targets, so it's a good choice for normal battles. For
- bosses, you should switch to a single-target weapon, as they're usually
- stronger.

- - The Gedokuyaku doesn't actually show up in your inventory.

- With Maniro in the lead, approach the counter from behind, press Confirm,
- and you're in action. You will then be approached by random fish dudes,
- who will offer to either buy or sell an item (or items). When you refuse
- an offer, there's a chance they'll give you a better offer. At best, this
- can happen twice per customer.
- - The starting price is always 60% of what it would cost in a regular
- store (although, as I've mentioned, very few of these items are available
- in stores). You can haggle it to as low as 35%, but this rarely happens.
- - When selling an item, the initial offer is always 50% of what it would
- sell for in a regular store. In other words, don't bother selling anything
- here. It's not a good idea.
- - It will take quite a while to get everything you need. In order to speed

- - You can use the Thunder Rapier during battle to deal 80 pod to a single

- - The Tenshi no Muneate is close to the best armor for Nina and Bleu. In
- addition to having great stats (76/3), it also reflects 50% of the base

- - You'll start off in a town where you have access to basic town services
- (no storage).
- - You can use the Trident in battle to deal 95 pod to all enemies.
- - The pot by the healing springs is actually a save point.
- - In the next area, you'll be walking on a narrow path with some panels
- that rotate the camera when you step on them. You can easily tell which
- way you were coming from, since you'll still be facing in the same
- direction after the rotation. However, there are many split paths, so
- you'll still likely end up struggling. There are no items in this area.
- × Here's where you need to go in each intersection (from the character's
- point of view): straight, left, straight, left, straight, left.
- - There's a hidden hole on the ground near the damaging yellow tiles in
- one of the rooms. You'll have to find it in order to proceed (simply
- stepping on it is enough).
- - And, finally, there's a room with five staircases leading up, but only
- one of them is real. Take the one on the bottom-right to reach the boss.
- - The remaining dungeons are nowhere near as hard, in case you're wondering.

- - The Evil Stick restores Bleu's AP by 3 whenever she attacks.
- - The Hyouga no Yoroi is pretty much the best armor for Ox. The Daichi no
- Yoroi may be 1 point lighter, but this one also give him some elemental
- resistance. You might want to hang on to Ox's old Earth Mail, so Mogu can
- use it for Thunder resistance (provided he has a non-elemental shield).
- Without it, he'll get killed by a single Baruharaa, although it's nothing
- a quick reviving spell or item can't fix, so it's really not a big deal.
- You can encounter Devil Ghosts again in the first half of the final dungeon,
- but no other (normal) enemy uses it.
- - After the event at the top of the tower, you'll find yourself on the

- - The Fuhai no Kabuto increases the damage you receive from certain

- It's also Light-elemental and, additionally, provides some resistance
- to Instant Death.
- - The Nazo no Tsume (120 ATP, 1 WGT) is not only Mogu's ultimate weapon

- - Once you've completed the three shrines and found all the Dragon gear,
- you can pick up Saigo no Chikara in the hidden area at the bottom of the

- 999 pod to all enemies every round, although other characters are removed
- during the transformation. It can only be used if all other characters
- are alive and available (ie. not fused).
- ¤~~~~~~¤ Makka / Ongaku ¤~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~¤
- - As I already mentioned, the flea market has now reached the final phase.
- - The Ryuuguu Maguro fully heals the HP of a single character along with
- curing any status ailments (can't be stacked).
- - The Kamen no Tate (65/8) is the strongest shield for most characters
- (everyone except Ryuu and whoever is using the Hoshi no Tate). It's non-
- elemental and also has the reflect ability, just like the Tenshi no Muneate,
- but unfortunately this one has a limited activation rate. Even so, it's still
- one of the best shields in the game. It's also easy to get (about as common
- as the Golden Tiara).
- - The Makai no Robe is for Nina and Bleu (90/1). A good choice, since it
- halves damage from the common elements (Fire, Ice, Thunder), but I'd stick
- to the Tenshi no Muneates.
- - The Kobito no Yumi (150/1) is Gilliam's second strongest weapon, but it's
- preferable over the strongest one, since it's one-handed and Dark-elemental.
- - The Chou no Rapier (82/0) is Nina's ultimate weapon, but, again, the Dark-
- elemental Buster Rapier (55/7) is preferable.
- - The Nirami no Tsue (100/8) is Bleu's ultimate weapon.
- - The Pico Pico Hammer (255/1) is Ox's ultimate weapon (Light/Dark-elemental).

- - When you finally reach Judas, he'll ask if you'd be interested in
- joining him. If you accept his offer, you can serve as his goon for a
- while, which means you'll be fighting a bunch of fixed encounters for
- his entertainment.
- [Boss: Judas]
- - 21 876 + 3124 HP, 0,42 Def, W:D, 280 ATP, 100 Act, 8000 xp, 8000 Z
- - Attack all, Suurei (100 \a), Baruharaa (400), Waasu.
- - The more dangerous spells aren't used much. Baruharaa always hits the
- first character.
- - I wouldn't bother with Nina's magic resisting spells (Makato, Mainama,
- Katomana), since they wear off after just one spell.
- - Once the battle is over, check behind the right pillar to find the
- Hoshikudaki no Tsuchi, and the area left of Judas's throne for the
- Koutei no Tsurugi, Ryuu's ultimate weapon (255/1), although the Ankoku
- no Knife can still deal a little more damage thanks to the elemental
- variable.
- - You can use the hammer in battle to deal 400 pod to all enemies.
- - You can use the sword in battle to deal 180 pod to all enemies.
- - At this point, it is a *very* good idea to leave and save your game.
- Only the final boss remains (unless you still have Dragon Shrines left
- that you haven't done). Grab some healing items from storage (Yakitori,
- Tsuki no Shizuku).
- - And, yeah, if you want levels, fighting Fireheads and Orc Masters in
- the Teito region is probably your best option. The encounter rate is
- pretty high by default, but you should still use a Tight Mini/Gorgeous
- Mail. Without Enc Up, it could take anywhere between 10-40 steps. With
- Enc Up, it'll never take much more than 8. You can get 50k in about 30
- minutes. After Lv50, each level requires 50-70k xp.
- - When you first talk to the Goddess, you can get your party fully healed.
- [Boss: Miria]
- - B: 28 000 HP, 0,4 Def, W:D, 300 ATP, 80 Act
- - C: 31 000 HP, 0,196 Def, W:D, 510 ATP, 220 Act
- - In order to see the good ending, you'll have to use Saigo no Chikara,
- so that you can fight her true form (C). Don't forget that Saigo can
- only be used when all characters are alive, and Danku isn't fused.
- - B: She only uses normal attacks and Suurei (100 pod to all).
- - C: She only uses normal attacks and Soru c (70 pod to all). Her ATP
- is quite high, so her physical attacks are a concern to characters with
- lower HP and DFP. Eg. with 300 DFP, you take 170 pod.
- - Reflect doesn't really help here, so give Nina a Makai no Robe.
- - Saigo no Chikara will indeed trivialize the battle, so I suggest you
- try to beat her without it. If you do use it, you should have Ryu equip
- the Oreta Ken, as it triggers a special guest appearance during the
- ending.
- End of file.
