  1. Breath of Fire
  2.
  3. Platform: Snes / SFC
  4. Released (d.m.y):
  5. 03.04.1993 (J)
  6. 10.08.1994 (NA)
  7.
  8. Based on: NTSC-J-version (SHVC-BF)
  9.
  10.
  11.
  12. - The game doesn't track your play time. Consider tracking it manually.
  13. - Technically, physical damage is (ATP/(target DFP*x/100))r, where x
  14. depends on how far you are into the game (10 initially, 8 after crossing
  15. the Windia bridge, 6 after fighting Muscle, 4 after fighting Tentacles,
  16. 2 after obtaining the Shounindama, and 1 after Nina rejoins).
  17. - A more practical formula (for damage dealt) would be ATP*Def/xr.
  18. - Def is 100/DFP.
  19. - r is the random variable: 0,8; 0,9; 1,0; 1,1; or 1,2.
  20. - Critical hits deal double damage.
  21. - A subject deals 1,3125x physical damage when below 1/8 HP.
  22. - Three characters are able to counter physical attacks: Ryuu (1/16),
  23. Danku (1/8) and Mogu (5/32). Counters can occur even if an attack is
  24. evaded.
  25. - Defending reduces physical damage by 22% in the front row and 30% in
  26. the back row. Enemies can't defend.
  27. - Being in the back row reduces physical damage received by an amount
  28. that varies depending on the attack (such as 16% or 4%). Physical damage
  29. dealt is also reduced by making the 1,1 and 1,2 random variables less
  30. likely to be used, thus reducing damage output by roughly 10%. Ranged
  31. weapons, such as bows and boomerangs, are unaffected. Enemies don't have
  32. rows.
  33.
  34. - Stats:
  35. Tsuyosa | Base ATP (Kougekiryoku)
  36. Stamina | Base DFP (Bougyoryoku)
  37. Subayasa | Base Act (Koudouryoku), Magic Defense
  38. Kashikosa | Base Wisdom (Chiryoku), Magic Defense
  39. Un no Yosa | Base Fate (Unsei) (critical hit rate)
  40.
  41. - The above five stats max out at 255.
  42. - ATP and DFP max out at 511.
  43. - ACT = Agility - Equipment weight. Act determines turn order (with no
  44. random variation), evade rate, and chance to escape. When escaping, the
  45. game only checks the Act of the first character (alive or not).
  46. - Wisdom affects the hit rate of status ailments.
  47. - Magic Defense (Tokubouryoku) = Act/4+Wisdom*0,75. Magic Defense only
  48. comes into play when defending. Specifically, it multiplies magical damage
  49. by (515-MDF)/600.
  50.
  51. - Magic deals fixed base damage. When magic is used during battle, it
  52. doesn't actually display the name of the spell, but rather it describes
  53. the effect.
  54. - Characters casting healing or support magic will act first during a
  55. given round.
  56. - Hitting an elemental weakness increases damage by 50%. The elements
  57. are: Fire (F), Ice (I), Thunder (T), Light (L), Dark (D), Anti-Air (A),
  58. and 'Crush' (C).
  59. - I've only listed elemental weaknesses (W:) for bosses.
  60. - Most enemies indeed have an elemental affinity, in which case their
  61. physical attacks and special attacks carry that element.
  62. - Equipment that provides elemental resistance will reduce damage from
  63. the element by 25%. However, different pieces of equipment cannot provide
  64. protection to multiple elements simultaneously, as the element check
  65. processes equipment in order of shield, body armor, and helmet, and the
  66. first element detected is the only one that counts.
  67. × Equipment can only provide resistance to Fire, Ice, Thunder, and Light.
  68. - Inventory: 48 (later 63) slots | Storage: 126 slots.
  69. - You can carry at most 999 999 Zenny. This is also the max amount you
  70. can deposit to storage.
  71. - The game's game over policy is the "golden parachute;" when you die,
  72. you lose half of the money you're carrying and end up at the last save
  73. point you used. If you can't return to that save point, you'll end up
  74. at some other location.
  75. - Level up gains are randomized to an extent.
  76. - The game doesn't tell you how much Exp is needed for the next level.
  77. - Exp is equally divided among all living party members, including the
  78. ones in the reserve.
  79. - You receive an Experience and Zenny bonus if you finish a battle in
  80. fewer than 7 rounds (at most a 50% bonus for a single round victory).
  81. - Enemies in BoF1 have no equipment drops whatsoever.
  82.
  83. - Healing Items (s: stacks)
  84. Yakusou s| 50 HP Chiryoku no Mi s| 20 AP

  160. Hairband 1000 Z Rifuru Ekisu 1800 Z
  161. Silk no Fuku 2800 Z
  162.
  163. - Grab the Stamina no Moto from the drawer as soon as you gain control.
  164. You can't get it later.
  165. - There's only a small, limited number of stat boosters to be found, and
  166. they only increase a stat by 1.
  167. - Buy a Kawa no Kata-ate. You'll get a good weapon in the first dungeon,
  168. so no need to buy one.
  169. - Buy a bunch of Herbs and a few Antidotes and level up before you head
  170. north to Kantabel.
  171. × A Ringo heals 60 HP vs. the 50 HP of a Yakusou, but it costs so much
  172. more, making it a terrible waste of your money.
  173. - You can rest by talking to the old woman.
  174. - In the settings, you can change the Confirm and Cancel buttons (I use
  175. Y for Confirm) as well as set hotkeys for different sub-menus (or just
  176. the main menu). I set Menu to X, Inventory to L, Magic to R and Switch
  177. to A.
  178. - You can leave the menu instantly by pressing the Menu button.

  183. Billbull | 20 | 833% | 3 | 4 |
  184.
  185. - After a battle, there's a chance that animals will spawn in the over-
  186. world. You'll soon be able to hunt them for healing items. Even before
  187. that, it's possible to kill deers if you get them cornered and just wait
  188. (I guess they die from a heart attack or something). Boars can also be
  189. killed in a similar way, but you need to trap them in a dead end, which
  190. you often won't even have a chance to do.
  191. - Ryu's field ability is fishing (which is mostly done in wells found
  192. on the overworld), but it's not very useful until later in the game.

  225. events here.
  226. - You can only enter Nanai at night and, even then, you'll have to
  227. keep a distance to the guards.
  228. - You get 10% off all items in the armory, but you also get 10% less
  229. for any items you sell.
  230. - Iron Rapier, Long Sword, Hairband = 4950 Z
  231. - The three seemingly elemental stones can be used during battle to
  232. deal fixed, non-elemental damage.

  240. - After the battle, remove the key from the pedestal and use the
  241. teleporter. If you wait for a while after getting the key, you'll get
  242. a message saying that you'll get a game over if you hang around for
  243. too long, so don't do that.
  244. - You can use the Daichi no Kagi in battle to damage all enemies for
  245. 30 pod.

  258. Hachigane 800 Z
  259. Kusarikatabira 2000 Z
  260.
  261. - Kudamono: 40 HP | Sakana: 10 HP
  262. - This is the first time you have access to the storage (azukariya).
  263. Drop off any money and items you won't need immediately.
  264. - You probably won't have the money to buy the Kusarikatabira, but you
  265. can fairly easily fix that by heading to the cave west. The guards
  266. won't let you farther into the cave, but you still have enough room to
  267. get into encounters. You can easily end the battles in one round with
  268. the Earth Key. Make sure you sort your inventory, so that it's easily
  269. available at the top of the list.
  270. - De-equip your Kote for Nina. If you already sold your Ki no Tate,
  271. she'll have to make do with the Kawa no Tate (and, later, Bandage).
  272. - Once you're prepared, head inside the castle, and talk to the queen.
  273. After some dialog, you'll find yourself in control of Nina while Ryuu
  274. is taking a break.
  275. - Her default equipment is quite modest (get used to that), which is
  276. exactly why I told you to buy that stuff from Nanai (Iron Rapier,
  277. Hairband), although it's not that big a deal if you missed it.
  278. - Her initial spells include: Ririfu, Katekuto, Yakuri.
  279. - Note that Nina starts off in the back row.
  280. - Nina levels up much faster than other characters between Lv29-46.
  281.

  284. Datenshi no Kiss, Miso no Moto (Artifact)
  285. - You can pick up some new items here now.
  286. - The item shop here give you a 20% discount, so feel free to pick
  287. up some Chiryoku no Mis. Just don't sell anything here.
  288. - Plus, resting at the inn will only cost you 1 Zenny.
  289.
  290. \\\ Aura no Doukutsu ||
  291. Items: Rifuru Ekisu, Tekkouseki (Unique, Temp), 70 Z, Kawa no Fuku,
  292. 150 Z, Yakusou, Yakusou, Thunder Stone, Tsumetai Ishi
  293. TPCs: Heishi 1 Lv8, Heishi 2 Lv8
  294. Default (Heishi 1 / 2): Yari, Kawa no Tate, Kawa no Fuku, Kawa no Boushi
  295. - Two nameless Windia soldiers will join your party here. They are only
  296. temporary, so don't bother getting them any new equipment or anything.
  297. They won't even gain any levels.
  298. - Heishi 2 is the fastest of the three characters (at least until Nina
  299. gets a level and a new armor), so he's the one who should be using the
  300. Earth Key initially.
  301. - You'll need the Tekkouseki to obtain another key item a little later
  302. in the game.
  303.
  304. \\\ Romero ||
  305. Items (nc): Rakki no Eda (Artifact), Mahou no Chizu (Unique), Abunai Kusuri
  306. Shop:

  308. Seidou no Tate 500 Z
  309. Seidou no Kabuto 1200 Z
  310. Tight Mini 2000 Z
  311. Silk no Fuku 2800 Z
  312.
  313. - Jump into the hole in one of the houses, and examine the area under
  314. the barrel to find the Mahou no Chizu, which allows you to display the
  315. world map by pressing Start (only usable on the overworld).
  316. - Seidou no Kabuto + Tight Mini = 3200 Z.
  317. - Keep in mind, if Nina's the lead character and she's equipped with the
  318. Tight Mini, you'll attract encounters more frequently (I wonder why).
  319.
  320. \\\ Karma Forest ||
  321. Items: Bushin no Tamashii (Artifact), Yakusou, Bandage (Unique),
  322. Yakusou, 150 Z, Miso no Moto (Artifact), Yakusou, Subayakusou (Artifact)

  324. Enemies: HP Def Exp Z
  325. Spider | 40 | 500% | 20 | 24 |
  326.
  327. - Note that you can eat the mushrooms here. Red ones are good (+10 HP),
  328. yellow ones are bad (-10 HP). They won't even despawn; you can use them
  329. as many times as you want.
  330. - The Bushin no Tamashii is completely hidden behind the very first tree.
  331. - One of the Herbs is also completely hidden behind a tree (near the Bandage).
  332. - Next up is the Miso no Moto (again completely hidden), which unfortunately
  333. isn't close to anything in particular other than one of the crossroads.
  334. - And, finally, the Subayakusou is hidden behind one of the trees near the
  335. exit.
  336. - The Datenshi no Kiss can be used during battle and has a chance of
  337. causing instant death. You should probably just sell them for 100 Z each.
  338.
  339. \\\ Karma no Tou ||
  340. Items: Yakusou, Yakusou, Tsuki no Shizuku, Tsuki no Shizuku, Ofuda,
  341. Rifuru Ekisu, Ofuda, Yakusou, Bannouyaku, Rifuru Ekisu, Saber (Unique)
  342. TPC: Heishi 3 Lv8
  343. Default (Heishi 3): Yari, Kawa no Tate, Kawa no Fuku, Kawa no Boushi
  344. Bosses: Teshita Uzoo, Teshita Muzoo, Mahoutsukai
  345. - You'll find two healing springs on the first floor.
  346. - You'll fight Uzoo on the first floor and Muzoo on the third.
  347. - On the second floor, go clockwise (to find two items), then counter-
  348. clockwise. On the third, go counter-clockwise, then clockwise. Get the
  349. last item on the third floor (by the four holes), then jump down the
  350. right hole on the second floor.
  351. - The Bannouyaku fully restores a single character (dead or alive).
  352. These are ideal for healing AP, but if you're in a sticky situation,
  353. you can certainly use one for reviving as well (Nina can start reviving
  354. characters with full HP once she hits Lv34). You'll never be able to
  355. buy these, but you'll find a bunch of them on the field, and there are
  356. a few enemies that can drop them.
  357.
  358. [Boss: Uzoo]
  359. - 113+ 7 HP, 185% Def, 280 xp, 200 Z
  360. - Casting Giigan on the soldiers helps speed things up.
  361.
  362. [Boss: Muzoo]
  363. - 202+28 HP, 156% Def, 280 xp, 200 Z
  364.
  365. - There's no way you can win the first or second battle with the wizard.
  366. Once the event is over, you'll switch back to Ryuu, who will get a ride
  367. to the top of the tower. You'll also be briefly assisted by Heishi 3.
  368. - The Saber is in the same room as the wizard. Grab it before fighting him.
  369. The Saber hits all targets, so it's a good choice for normal battles. For
  370. bosses, you should switch to a single-target weapon, as they're usually
  371. stronger.
  372.
  373. [Boss: Mahoutsukai]
  374. - 169+11 HP, 417% Def, 1000 xp, 700 Z
  375.
  376. - The Gedokuyaku doesn't actually show up in your inventory.
  377.
  378. - After the event in Windia, you're free to travel east across the bridge
  379. (accessed through the basement of the castle). Go pick up another
  380. Kusarikatabira for Bo first, though.
  381.
  382. Items: Yakusou, Seidou no Kabuto \\\ Kyojin ||
  383. - Find the Stone Robot in the northeast.
  384. - Nothing else you can do here yet aside from getting these two chests.
  385. The Killer Helms hit pretty hard, so keep your HP at full.

  396. is Tataar, and the eastern one is Totoor.
  397. - Buy a Short Bow.
  398. - Give the Tekkouseki to the blacksmith here to receive the Nokogiri.
  399. You'll need it to access the Nageki no Mori northwest from here. Within
  400. the forest, you'll find a fortress belonging to the Dark Dragon Clan
  401. (Kokuryuu-zoku).

  896. (shot is faster and covers 5 tiles). Oh, and his HP is tripled and the
  897. damage he deals is multiplied by 1,7. Danku also takes more physical

  908. - The Sea Blobs can get rather dangerous, what with their Ikazuchi dealing

  917. - Go to the largest building in Makka, the one with the empty counter.
  918. With Maniro in the lead, approach the counter from behind, press Confirm,
  919. and you're in action. You will then be approached by random fish dudes,
  920. who will offer to either buy or sell an item (or items). When you refuse
  921. an offer, there's a chance they'll give you a better offer. At best, this
  922. can happen twice per customer.
  923. - The starting price is always 60% of what it would cost in a regular
  924. store (although, as I've mentioned, very few of these items are available
  925. in stores). You can haggle it to as low as 35%, but this rarely happens.
  926. - When selling an item, the initial offer is always 50% of what it would
  927. sell for in a regular store. In other words, don't bother selling anything
  928. here. It's not a good idea.
  929. - It will take quite a while to get everything you need. In order to speed

  934. - The Tenshi no Muneate is close to the best armor for Nina and Bleu.
  935. In addition to having great stats (76/3), it also reflects 50% of any magical
  936. damage the character receives. There are a couple of stronger and lighter

1202. - Talk to the old woman in green (day / night).

1213. - All you need to do is go talk to the little kid hanging out by the
1214. staircase (you can try and fight him, but you can't beat him yet). This
1215. can be rather difficult, however, thanks to the invisible walls. If you
1216. go counter-clockwise at the beginning, it will likely be much easier.
1217. - Head back to the village and talk to the mole (Anima) waiting for you
1218. outside. In town, talk to the other mole in the house where Anima is.
1219. - You should now be able to reach the Poison Field.

1230. really have any good gear for him, that's fine. He starts off with less
1231. than 100 HP, so you shouldn't bother using him yet anyway.

  1258.
1259. Item (nc): Hahanaru Yoroi (Unique) \\\ Kaze ||
1260. - The Hahanaru Yoroi blocks seemingly all magical damage, while healing
1261. the character slightly whenever hit by a spell. I'd actually recommend
  1262. against using it.
  1263.
1264. Item (nc): Niji no Hagoromo (Unique) \\\ Yami ||
  1265. Special: Pukagyuru
1266. - The Niji no Hagoromo is the strongest armor Nina and Bleu can wear
1267. with 100 DFP and 0 WGT. Although these stats are impressive, the Tenshi
1268. no Muneate is still a good choice because of the reflect auto-ability.
1269. - Danku's final union spell, Pukagyuru, fuses him with Gilliam, Maniro
1270. and Ox. In this form, he gets 4x HP, 2,5x dmg and has a chance of doing
1271. a special rolling attack that does double dmg (and can still do criticals).
1272. On the field, he can open the sealed doors with dragon symbols on them.
1273. - Note that you can walk through the wall next to the old man's bed.
1274. This will take you outside the house, whereas taking the stairs takes
1275. you to the world map.
1276. - If you use Puka, you'll have to choose between Mogu and Bleu as your
1277. fourth party member. Until Mogu gets his HP up (say, above 200), you
  1278. should go with Bleu.

  1298. Devil Ghost | 2400 | 125% | 840 | 200 |
  1299.
1300. - Note that you can run into some pretty tough enemies in the first
1301. area (Jelly Golem, Devil Ghost). Devil Ghost in particular is quite
1302. dangerous, as it can deal 400 pod to a single target with Baruharaa.
1303. Unfortunately, they don't give you exceptional amounts of Xp or anything.
1304. You'll start running into them again at the end of the next dungeon as
  1305. well.
1306. - The Magma no Yoroi is Mogu's strongest armor (outside of the Hahanaru
  1307. Yoroi).
1308. - The hidden items are behind two of the pillars near the other staircase
  1309. on the bottom level.
1310. - Once you're inside the actual tower, you'll find that each floor is

1333. - You can use the Trident in battle to deal 95 pod to all enemies.
1334. - The pot by the healing springs is actually a save point.
1335. - In the next area, you'll be walking on a narrow path with some panels
1336. that rotate the camera when you step on them. You can easily tell which
1337. way you were coming from, since you'll still be facing in the same
1338. direction after the rotation. However, there are many split paths, so
1339. you'll still likely end up struggling. There are no items in this area.
1340. × Here's where you need to go in each intersection (from the character's
1341. point of view): straight, left, straight, left, straight, left.
1342. - There's a hidden hole on the ground near the damaging yellow tiles
1343. in one of the rooms. You'll have to find it in order to proceed (simply
1344. stepping on it is enough).
1345. - And, finally, there's a room with five staircases leading up, but
1346. only one of them is real. Take the one on the bottom-right to reach
  1347. the boss.
1348. - The remaining dungeons are nowhere near as hard, in case you're

  1400.
1401. - The Evil Stick restores Bleu's AP by 3 whenever she attacks.
1402. - The Hyouga no Yoroi is pretty much the best armor for Ox. The Daichi
1403. no Yoroi may be 1 point lighter, but this one also give him some
1404. elemental resistance. You might want to hang on to Ox's old Earth Mail,
1405. so Mogu can use it for Thunder resistance (provided he has a non-elemental
1406. shield). Without it, he'll get killed by a single Baruharaa, although
1407. it's nothing a quick reviving spell or item can't fix, so it's really
1408. not a big deal. You can encounter Devil Ghosts again in the first half
1409. of the final dungeon, but no other (normal) enemy uses it.
1410. - After the event at the top of the tower, you'll find yourself on
1411. the world map, separated from the rest of your party. You'll have to
1412. make it back to Chamu with Ryu alone (getting hit with a death spell

1567. - The Ryuuguu Maguro fully heals the HP of a single character along with
1568. curing any status ailments (can't be stacked).
1569. - The Kamen no Tate (65/8) is the strongest shield for most characters
1570. (everyone except Ryuu and whoever is using the Hoshi no Tate). It's non-
1571. elemental and also has the reflect ability, just like the Tenshi no Muneate,
1572. but unfortunately this one has a limited activation rate. Even so, it's still
1573. one of the best shields in the game. It's also pretty easy to get (about as
1574. common as the Gold Tiara).
1575. - The Makai no Robe is for Nina and Bleu (90/1). Easily their best choice,
1576. since it halves damage from the common elements (Fire, Ice, Thunder).
1577. - The Kobito no Yumi (150/1) is Gilliam's second strongest weapon. One-handed.
1578. - The Chou no Rapier (82/0) is Nina's ultimate weapon, but don't forget

  1632.
1633. - Next, you'll find a recovery point and soon thereafter a hole on the
1634. ground that takes you back to the beginning. Probably not where you want
  1635. to go.
1636. - The last section of the dungeon is similar to Kita no Tou, with switches
1637. on the ground that turn the floor either visible or invisible. You don't
1638. have to deal with any of that if you just go counter-clockwise.
  1639.
  1640. - Overworld theme 1
1641. - If you head to Teito, you'll notice that the whole place is now missing.
1642. In its stead, you'll find this... floating castle thing (the final dungeon).
1643. Before you can explore it, though, you'll need a certain key item.

1660. - The Hagan no Tsume can't be equipped; it's just a key item. Also,
1661. before you can actually use it, you'll have to talk to one of the NPCs
1662. (Anahorimeijin) in Gramor with Mogu.

  1677.
1678. - Again, the Devil Ghost can cast Baruharaa (400 pod).
1679. - There are no save points in the final dungeon, I'm afraid. Then again,
1680. it's not that long or difficult. Although, there is that big room after
1681. Goda that's cloned three times for a total of 4 'instances.' They're
1682. basically identical. They all lead to the same place, and there doesn't
1683. seem to be any items, so don't bother going through each of them.
  1684.
  1685. [Boss: Goda]
  1686. - 5504 + 5496 HP, 45% Def, W:C, 6000 xp, 6000 Z
1687. - Goda doesn't use any magic at all.
  1688.
1689. - When you finally reach Judas, he'll ask if you'd be interested in
1690. joining him. If you accept his offer, you can serve as his goon for a
1691. while, which means you'll be fighting a bunch of fixed encounters for
  1692. his entertainment.
  1693.
  1694. [Boss: Judas]
  1695. - 21 876 + 3124 HP, 42% Def, W:D, 8000 xp, 8000 Z
1696. - His two most dangerous attacks are BoltX (400 pod, always used on the
1697. first character) and Rub. He doesn't use either one often, though.
  1698. - I wouldn't bother with Nina's magic resisting spells (Makato, Mainama,
1699. Katomana), since they wear off after just one spell.
  1700.
1701. - Once the battle is over, check behind the right pillar to find the
1702. Hoshikudaki no Tsuchi, and the area left of Judas's throne for the
1703. Koutei no Tsurugi, Ryuu's ultimate weapon (255/1)(although the Ankoku
1704. no Knife can still deal a little more damage thanks to the elemental
  1705. variable).
1706. - You can use the hammer in battle to deal 400 pod to all enemies.
1707. - You can use the Koutei no Tsurugi in battle to deal 180 pod to all
  1708. enemies.
  1709.
1710. - At this point, it is a *very* good idea to leave and save your game.
1711. Only the final boss remains (unless you still have Dragon Shrines left
  1712. that you haven't done).
1713. - And, yeah, if you want levels, fighting Fireheads and Orc Masters in
1714. the Teito region is probably your best option. The encounter rate is
1715. pretty high by default, so using the Tight Mini or Gorgeous Mail won't
1716. make a big difference. Either way, you can get about 50k in 30 minutes.
1717. After Lv50, each level requires 50-70k xp.
1718. - When you first talk to the Goddess, you can get your party fully healed.
  1719.
  1720. [Boss: Miria]
  1721. - B: 28 000 HP, 40% Def, W:D
  1722. - C: 31 000 HP, 19,6% Def, W:D
1723. - In order to see the good ending, you'll have to use Saigo no Chikara,
1724. so that you can fight her true form (C). Don't forget that Saigo can
1725. only be used when all characters are alive, and Danku isn't fused.
1726. - B: She only uses normal attacks and Suurei (100 pod to all).
1727. - C: She only uses normal attacks and Soru c (70 pod to all). Her ATP
1728. is 510, so her physical attacks are a concern to characters with lower
1729. HP and DFP. Eg. with 300 DFP, you take 170 pod.
1730. - Saigo no Chikara will indeed trivialize the battle, so I suggest you
1731. try to beat her without it. If you do use it, you should have Ryu equip
1732. the Oreta Ken, as it triggers a special guest appearance during the
  1733. ending.
  1734.
  1735.
  1736.
  1737.
  1738.
  1739. End of file.
