  1. Breath of Fire
  2.
  3. Platform: Snes / SFC
  4. Released (d.m.y):
  5. 03.04.1993 (J)
  6. 10.08.1994 (NA)
  7.
  8. Based on: NTSC-J-version (SHVC-BF)
  9.
  10.
  11.
  12. - The game doesn't track your play time. Consider tracking it manually.
  13. - Technically, physical damage is (ATP/(target DFP*x/100))r, where x
  14. depends on how far you are into the game (10 initially, 8 after crossing
  15. the Windia bridge, 6 after fighting Muscle, 4 after fighting Tentacles,
  16. 2 after obtaining the Shounindama, and 1 after Nina rejoins).
  17. - A more practical formula would be (ATP*Def/x)r.
  18. - Def is 100/DFP.
  19. - r is the random variable: 0,8; 0,9; 1,0; 1,1; or 1,2.
  20. - +1 is added at the end unless the random variable was 1,0.
  21. - Critical hits deal double damage.
  22. - A subject deals 1,3125x physical damage when below 1/8 HP.
  23. - Three characters are able to counter physical attacks: Ryuu (1/16),
  24. Danku (1/8) and Mogu (5/32). Counters can occur even if an attack is
  25. evaded.
  26. - Defending reduces physical damage by 22% in the front row and 30% in
  27. the back row. Enemies can't defend.
  28. - Being in the back row reduces physical damage received by an amount
  29. that varies depending on the attack (such as 16% or 4%). Physical damage
  30. dealt is also reduced by making the 1,1 and 1,2 random variables less
  31. likely to be used, thus reducing damage output by roughly 10%. Ranged
  32. weapons, such as bows and boomerangs, are unaffected. While enemies also
  33. have rows, there are only four enemies that are in the back row (mainly
  34. archers).
  35.
  36. - Stats:
  37. Tsuyosa (Str) | Base ATP (Kougekiryoku)
  38. Stamina (Stm) | Base DFP (Bougyoryoku)
  39. Subayasa (Agi) | Base Act (Koudouryoku), Magic Defense
  40. Kashikosa (Int) | Base Wisdom (Chiryoku), Magic Defense
  41. Un no Yosa (Luck)| Base Fate (Unsei) (critical hit rate)
  42.
  43. - The above five stats max out at 255. ATP and DFP max out at 511. HP
  44. and damage max out at 999.
  45. - Act = Agility - Equipment weight. Act determines turn order (with no
  46. random variation), evade rate, and chance to escape. When escaping, the
  47. game only checks the Act of the first character (alive or not).
  48. - Wisdom affects the hit rate of status ailments.
  49. - Magic Defense (Tokubouryoku) = Act/4+Wisdom*0,75. Magic Defense only
  50. comes into play when defending. Specifically, it multiplies magical damage
  51. by (515-MDF)/600.
  52.
  53. - Magic deals fixed base damage. When magic is used during battle, it
  54. doesn't actually display the name of the spell, but rather it describes
  55. the effect.
  56. - Support spells like Katekuto and Giigan increase a stat by a fixed
  57. number, and the effect doesn't stack.
  58. - Characters casting healing or support magic will act first during a
  59. given round.
  60. - Hitting an elemental weakness increases damage by 50%. The elements
  61. are: Fire (F), Ice (I), Thunder (T), Light (L), Dark (D), Anti-Air (A),
  62. and Armor-Piercing (P).
  63. - All enemies have an elemental affinity, and their physical attacks
  64. carry that element. That element is also their weakness. However, with
  65. no option to switch gear mid-battle, your ability to exploit the varying
  66. elemental weaknesses of normal enemies is limited. You'll mainly want
  67. to take note of the elemental weaknesses (W:) of bosses.
  68. - Equipment that provides elemental resistance will reduce damage from
  69. the element by 25%. However, different pieces of equipment cannot provide
  70. protection to multiple elements simultaneously, as the element check
  71. processes equipment in order of shield, body armor, and helmet, and the
  72. first element detected is the only one that counts.
  73. - Equipment can only provide resistance to Fire, Ice, Thunder, and Light.
  74. - Inventory: 48 (later 63) slots | Storage: 126 slots.
  75. - You can carry at most 999 999 Zenny. This is also the max amount you
  76. can deposit to storage.
  77. - Enemies, including bosses, have a visible HP bar. It's not entirely
  78. accurate for bosses, however, as nearly all bosses gain a second wind
  79. upon first reaching 0 HP. When this happens, a certain figure is added
  80. to both their current and max HP.
  81. - The game's game over policy is the "golden parachute;" when you die,
  82. you lose half of the money you're carrying and end up at the last save
  83. point you used. If you can't return to that save point, you'll end up
  84. at some other location.
  85. - Level up gains are randomized to an extent.
  86. - The game doesn't tell you how much Exp is needed for the next level.
  87. - Exp is equally divided among all living party members, including the
  88. ones in the reserve.
  89. - You receive an Experience and Zenny bonus if you finish a battle in
  90. fewer than 7 rounds (at most a 50% bonus for a single round victory).
  91. - Enemies in BoF1 have no equipment drops whatsoever.
  92.
  93. - Healing Items (s: stacks)

  179.
  180. - Grab the Stamina no Moto from the drawer as soon as you gain control.
  181. You can't get it later.
  182. - There's only a small, limited number of stat boosters to be found, and
  183. they only increase a stat by 1.
  184. - Buy a Kawa no Kata-ate. You'll get a good weapon, helm, and shield in
  185. the first dungeon, so no need to buy those. Buy 3 Boros, though. They'll
  186. come into play later.
  187. - Buy a bunch of Herbs and a few Antidotes and level up before you head
  188. north to Kantabel.
  189. × A Ringo heals 60 HP vs. the 50 HP of a Yakusou, but it costs so much
  190. more, making it a terrible waste of your money.
  191. - You can rest by talking to the old woman.
  192. - In the settings, you can change the Confirm and Cancel buttons (I use
  193. Y for Confirm) as well as set hotkeys for different sub-menus (or just
  194. the main menu). I set Menu to X, Inventory to L, Magic to R and Switch
  195. to A.
  196. - You can leave the menu instantly by pressing the Menu button.

  205.
  206. - Don't forget to use the handy auto-battle function when appropriate.
  207. You can cancel it by pressing Cancel.
  208. - After a battle, there's a chance that animals will spawn in the over-
  209. world. You'll soon be able to hunt them for healing items. Even before
  210. that, it's possible to kill deers if you get them cornered and just wait
  211. (I guess they die from a heart attack or something). Boars can also be
  212. killed in a similar way, but you need to trap them in a dead end, which
  213. you often won't even have a chance to do.
  214. - If you manage to take out a white deer, you can sell the Shiroshika
  215. no Tsuno for 1500 Z. You could certainly use the money.
  216. - Ryu's field ability is fishing (which is mostly done in wells found
  217. on the overworld), but it's not very useful until later in the game.
  218.
  219. - Let's have a look at Ryu's early game gear.

  301. - You can only enter Nanai at night and, even then, you'll have to
  302. keep a distance to the guards.
  303. - You get 10% off all items in the armory, but you also get 10% less
  304. for any items you sell.
  305. - Iron Rapier, Long Sword, Hairband = 4950 Z
  306. × This is your only chance to buy an Iron Rapier. It's the strongest
  307. weapon Nina can have for a good while, but if you just have her using
  308. the Earth Key, it's not really needed. At the very least, buy a Long
  309. Sword. You can buy a Hairband in Drogen later.
  310. - You'll run into tougher battles below the first lava area.
  311. - The three seemingly elemental stones can be used during battle to
  312. deal fixed, non-elemental damage.

  319. - He can cast Baru (20 pod, 4 AP) and Apurifu (heal 40 HP, 6 AP).
  320. - Don't forget that even enemies get the low HP damage bonus.
  321.
  322. - After the battle, remove the key from the pedestal and use the
  323. teleporter. If you wait for a while after getting the key, you'll get
  324. a message saying that you'll get a game over if you hang around for
  325. too long, so don't do that.
  326. - You can use the Daichi no Kagi in battle to damage all enemies for
  327. 30 pod. There are many other similar items that allow characters like
  328. Nina to deal pretty good damage, but you should consider refraining
  329. from using them for a little extra challenge.

  526. These are ideal for healing AP, but if you're in a sticky situation,

  528. characters with full HP once she hits Lv34). You'll never be able to

  532. [Boss: Uzoo]
  533. - 113+ 7 HP, 1,85 Def, 64 ATP, 25 Act, 280 xp, 200 Z
  534. - Casting Giigan (ATP +50) on the soldiers helps speed things up.
  535.
  536. [Boss: Muzoo]
  537. - 202+28 HP, 1,56 Def, 90 ATP, 25 Act, 280 xp, 200 Z
  538. - Might want to cast Katekuto (DFP +20). The effect doesn't stack.
  539.
  540. - Once you're in the other tower, have the soldiers switch back to their
  541. default gear and also have them equip the Boros I told you to buy. Nina
  542. should replace the Kote with the Bandage.
  543. - There's no way you can win the first or second battle with the wizard.
  544. Once the event is over, you'll switch back to Ryuu, who will get a ride
  545. to the top of the tower. You'll also be briefly assisted by Heishi 3. He
  546. leaves the party just before you enter the wizard's room. Equip him with
  547. the last Boro, so you can sell his armor.
  548. - The Saber is in the same room as the wizard. Grab it before fighting him.
  549. The Saber hits all targets, so it's a good choice for normal battles. For
  550. bosses, you should switch to a single-target weapon, as they're usually
  551. stronger.
  552.
  553. [Boss: Mahoutsukai]
  554. - 169+11 HP, 4,17 Def, 40 ATP, 60 Act, 1000 xp, 700 Z
  555. - He uses Baru (10), Rei (15), and Katekuto (DFP +20 \ Def = 2,27). He
  556. has a 50% chance of evading your attack after casting Katekuto. He doesn't
  557. attack physically.
  558.
  559. - The Gedokuyaku doesn't actually show up in your inventory.
  560. - After the event in Windia, Nina joins the party, and you're free to

1456. - Go to the largest building in Makka, the one with the empty counter.
1457. With Maniro in the lead, approach the counter from behind, press Confirm,
1458. and you're in action. You will then be approached by random fish dudes,
1459. who will offer to either buy or sell an item (or items). When you refuse
1460. an offer, there's a chance they'll give you a better offer. At best, this
1461. can happen twice per customer.
1462. - The starting price is always 60% of what it would cost in a regular
1463. store (although, as I've mentioned, very few of these items are available
1464. in stores). You can haggle it to as low as 35%, but this rarely happens.
1465. - When selling an item, the initial offer is always 50% of what it would
1466. sell for in a regular store. In other words, don't bother selling anything
  1467. here. It's not a good idea.
1468. - It will take quite a while to get everything you need. In order to speed
1469. things up, go deposit all your items into the storage (or at least the ones
  1470. that can be sold).
1471. - You can use the Thunder Rapier during battle to deal 80 pod to a single
1472. target. Again, the weapon is actually non-elemental.
1473. - The Tenshi no Muneate is close to the best armor for Nina and Bleu. In
1474. addition to having great stats (76/3), it also reflects 50% of the base
1475. damage of magic (note that enemy spells sometimes use different values
1476. from the base values). There are a couple of stronger and lighter ones,
1477. which you won't be picking up anytime soon, but I'd mostly stick to the

1950. - Head back to the village and talk to the mole (Anima) waiting for you

2038. - Danku's final union spell, Pukagyuru, fuses him with Gilliam, Maniro

2289. - The Evil Stick restores Bleu's AP by 3 whenever she attacks.
2290. - The Hyouga no Yoroi is pretty much the best armor for Ox. The Daichi no
2291. Yoroi may be 1 point lighter, but this one also give him some elemental
2292. resistance. You might want to hang on to Ox's old Earth Mail, so Mogu can
2293. use it for Thunder resistance (provided he has a non-elemental shield).
2294. Without it, he'll get killed by a single Baruharaa, although it's nothing
2295. a quick reviving spell or item can't fix, so it's really not a big deal.
2296. You can encounter Devil Ghosts again in the first half of the final dungeon,
2297. but no other (normal) enemy uses it.
2298. - After the event at the top of the tower, you'll find yourself on the

  2463.

2465. - The Ryuuguu Maguro fully heals the HP of a single character along with
2466. curing any status ailments (can't be stacked).
2467. - The Kamen no Tate (65/8) is the strongest shield for most characters
2468. (everyone except Ryuu and whoever is using the Hoshi no Tate). It's non-
2469. elemental and also has the reflect ability, just like the Tenshi no Muneate,
2470. but unfortunately this one has a limited activation rate. Even so, it's still
2471. one of the best shields in the game. It's also easy to get (about as common
  2472. as the Golden Tiara).
2473. - The Makai no Robe is for Nina and Bleu (90/1). A good choice, since it
2474. halves damage from the common elements (Fire, Ice, Thunder), but I'd stick
2475. to the Tenshi no Muneates.
2476. - The Kobito no Yumi (150/1) is Gilliam's second strongest weapon, but it's
2477. preferable over the strongest one, since it's one-handed and Dark-elemental.
2478. - The Chou no Rapier (82/0) is Nina's ultimate weapon, but, again, the Dark-
2479. elemental Buster Rapier (55/7) is preferable.
2480. - The Nirami no Tsue (100/8) is Bleu's ultimate weapon.
  2481. - The Pico Pico Hammer (255/1) is Ox's ultimate weapon (Light/Dark-elemental).

2633. (Anahorimeijin) in Gramor with Mogu.

2660. - There are no save points in the final dungeon, I'm afraid. Then again,
2661. it's not that long or difficult, although there is that big room after
2662. Goda that's cloned three times for a total of four 'instances.' They're
2663. basically identical. They all lead to the same place, and there aren't
2664. any items, so don't bother going through each of them.
  2665.
  2666. [Boss: Goda]
  2667. - 5504 + 5496 HP, 0,45 Def, W:P, 234 ATP, 60 Act, 6000 xp, 6000 Z
2668. - He has no special attacks whatsoever.
  2669.
2670. - When you finally reach Judas, he'll ask if you'd be interested in
2671. joining him. If you accept his offer, you can serve as his goon for a
2672. while, which means you'll be fighting a bunch of fixed encounters for
  2673. his entertainment.
  2674.
  2675. [Boss: Judas]
  2676. - 21 876 + 3124 HP, 0,42 Def, W:D, 280 ATP, 100 Act, 8000 xp, 8000 Z
  2677. - Attack all, Suurei (100 \a), Baruharaa (400), Waasu.
2678. - The more dangerous spells aren't used much. Baruharaa always hits the
  2679. first character.
  2680. - I wouldn't bother with Nina's magic resisting spells (Makato, Mainama,
2681. Katomana), since they wear off after just one spell.
  2682.
2683. - Once the battle is over, check behind the right pillar to find the
2684. Hoshikudaki no Tsuchi, and the area left of Judas's throne for the
2685. Koutei no Tsurugi, Ryuu's ultimate weapon (255/1), although the Ankoku
2686. no Knife can still deal a little more damage thanks to the elemental
  2687. variable.
2688. - You can use the hammer in battle to deal 400 pod to all enemies.
2689. - You can use the sword in battle to deal 180 pod to all enemies.
  2690.
2691. - At this point, it is a *very* good idea to leave and save your game.
2692. Only the final boss remains (unless you still have Dragon Shrines left
2693. that you haven't done). Grab some healing items from storage (Yakitori,
  2694. Tsuki no Shizuku).
2695. - And, yeah, if you want levels, fighting Fireheads and Orc Masters in
2696. the Teito region is probably your best option. The encounter rate is
2697. pretty high by default, but you should still use a Tight Mini/Gorgeous
2698. Mail. Without Enc Up, it could take anywhere between 10-40 steps. With
2699. Enc Up, it'll never take much more than 8. You can get 50k in about 30
2700. minutes. After Lv50, each level requires 50-70k xp.
2701. - When you first talk to the Goddess, you can get your party fully healed.
  2702.
  2703. [Boss: Miria]
  2704. - B: 28 000 HP, 0,4 Def, W:D, 300 ATP, 80 Act
  2705. - C: 31 000 HP, 0,196 Def, W:D, 510 ATP, 220 Act
2706. - In order to see the good ending, you'll have to use Saigo no Chikara,
2707. so that you can fight her true form (C). Don't forget that Saigo can
2708. only be used when all characters are alive, and Danku isn't fused.
2709. - B: She only uses normal attacks and Suurei (100 pod to all).
2710. - C: She only uses normal attacks and Soru c (70 pod to all). Her ATP
2711. is quite high, so her physical attacks are a concern to characters with
2712. lower HP and DFP. Eg. with 300 DFP, you take 170 pod.
2713. - Reflect doesn't really help here, so give Nina a Makai no Robe.
2714. - Saigo no Chikara will indeed trivialize the battle, so I suggest you
2715. try to beat her without it. If you do use it, you should have Ryu equip
2716. the Oreta Ken, as it triggers a special guest appearance during the
  2717. ending.
  2718.
  2719.
  2720.
  2721.
  2722.
  2723. End of file.
