  2.
  3. So this MacBook; they say doesn't turn on; I'm not sure I necessarily believe that
  4.
  5. because, as you can see this is:
  6.
  7. an 820-3332 board; this is the 2012 machine
  8.
  9. where the issue with it is that
  10.
  11. the buck converter starts to come desoldered from the machine
  12.
  13. because on the newer machines they put supports for the board so it doesn't flex
  14.
  15. this board has no supports in it so it flexes right around this fault line.
  16.
  17. So, very often you either have
  18.
  19. - GPUvCore is gone, or
  20. - you have beeping due to a ram issue
  21.
  22. Now the first thing that strikes me as strange here...
  23.
  24. - [Louis talks about his new stuff]
  25.
  26. This was unplugged already,
  27.
  28. - so I already know that somebody fucked with this and
  29.
  30. I kind of wonder
  31.
  32. - if the keyboard is corroded, which it's not, and
  33. - if the reason it wasn't turning on is because
  34. - this keyboard was not plugged in, so let's plug this and not just plug it in, but let's close the latch, because, remember;
  35. - on this machine the power button itself is going to be on the keyboard so
  36. - if the keyboard is not plugged in then it's not going to turn on so let's see what we get now, let's see if this thing turns on, which I bet it will.
  37.
  38. Okay, we plug it in, it's taking 400mA, and then turning off.
  39.
  40. It's also clicking. Hear that? It's probably a clicking hard drive.
  41.
  42. This is interesting. So this
  43.
  44. - is not going to be my U8900 problem
  45. - because the U8900 problem would simply keep it from turning on with an image on the screen, but it would turn on,
  46. - and also we have clicking.
  47.
  48. I'm very curious about this clicking, especially since the computer, does not have a hard drive. (That would be, really interesting if Apple managed to make this thing)
  49.
  50. Oh, [NYUMAI] caps; yep, I forgot about that too.
  51.
  52. - Intermission
  53.
  54. So, we're gonna take this board out of the case, and try to get an idea of what it is that's making a clicking noise.
  55.
  56. So, I've taken the hard drive out of the
  57. case,
  58.
  59. - so it may be the hard drive that's making a clicking noise
  60. - but we're not going to know since I've taken it out of the case,
  61. - so remember: hard drives can click when they go bad.
  62. - Intermission
  63. - Louis laments the view of a horibbly soldered chip
  64.
  65. So I'm gonna caso we have a couple of bridges
  66. let's go over the bridges and maybe I'll
  67. sell one of them to you speaking of
  68. things that I should sell to you that
  69. are similarly useful as a bridge
  70.
  71. - The "Employee Section" Door
  72.
  73. I'm gonna open up a schematic and a board view for the 820-3332 and we're gonna go from there.
  74.
  75. So, the first thing that we've got that's messed up over here is this [two resistors, R8983 and R8974 being shorted]
  76.
  77. - So these over here are tied together so, what is [the signal]?
  78. - PP3V3GPU
  79. - graphics_DPSLP
  80.
  81. So, let's see:
  82.
  83. - R8974: great, well that's tied to ground. What else do we have here?
  84.
  85. So, we have bridging:
  86.
  87. - on the third and the fourth and the fifth pin here (Pins 13, 14, 15 of the U8900)
  88. - in the second and the third pin from the top over there (Pins 19, 18 of the U8900)
  89.
  90. So, what are those for?
  91.
  92. - Pin 19: GFXIMVP_BOOT1
  93. - Pin 18: GFXIMVP6_IMON
  94. - Louis begins Board Repair and talks about politics, and his grandfather, while replacing the U8900 and the nearby components
  95.
  96. In this point, you got a nice "Paul" amount of flux on this board.
  97.
  98. Okay! As you can see, we do have fan spin but fan spin does not mean that it's fixed. We're going to test it and see if we have image.
  99.
  100. - Louis explains why we don't have image
  101.
  102. And notice: the clicking went away.
  103.
  104. - Louis is curious about the clicking noise.
  105.
  106. See that question mark folder?
  107.
  108. So, this wasn't turning on; this was not turning on because somebody decided that
  109.
  110. - they were going to try to reflow U8900 with [I don't know; what they used, it probably wasn't a soldering iron], but it works now.
  111.
  112. So we put everything back into place wiped, everything clean.
  113.
  114. And now not only
  115.
  116. - we have GPU turning on,
  117. - we also have GPUVCORE.
  118.
  119. So, this U8900, we were able to
  120. salvage.
  121.
  122. The last two U8900 I was not able to salvage,
  123.
  124. - I did a video of that recently;
  125. - I couldn't salvage that because
  126. - the board was bent
  127. - there was long screw [damage]
  128. - layers were coming up off of
  129. the board
  130. - Apology issued to a technician: why Louis won't work on pre-damaged stuff
  131. - Louis's RRG promo
