CCTV shows police killing of unarmed suspect

At Sosiego Street in Sampaloc, Manila, a police operation ended the life of a robbery suspect. The incident is under ctitical investigation as the police statement does not correspond with the CCTV footage.

Reporters were told by Police Superintendent Manan Muarip that the suspect was killed during a gun battle with the police.

He claimed that the modus operandi of the suspect was to drive around the night and quiet streets of the area with his accomplice and find victims there. According to Muarip, the police were only defending themselves when they shoot the suspect.

However, the CCTV footage of the incident doesn't match his statement.

The footage shows the suspect driving a tricycle with a back-rider when the police suddenly blocks the vehicle. The back-rider immediately jumps off and ran away to the opposite lane.

The suspect then stops the tricycle to step out and sit on the ground, appearing to raise his hands over his head to surrender when one of the policemen then shoots him three times at close range!

As shown in the CCTV footage, the accomplice walks back to the scene of the shooting after attempting to escape. One of the police officers then grabs his arm and leads him to the car used by the police.

According to Muarip's initial story, they recovered a 9 mm and a caliber 45 pistol from the suspect. But the CCTV footage, however, shows one of the policemen placed a metallic object near the hand of the dead suspect.

Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) conducted an investigation and they later revealed that the object was a 9 mm pistol.

Chief Superintendent Rolando Nana, Manila Police District director, said: "Planting of evidence is a definite no-no in the [Philippine] National Police."

He also added that the suspect should be arrested and not shot when they surrender. The police can only shoot their weapons if there is imminent danger.

Today, another investigation is scheduled. If it was proven that the policemen used excessive force, Nana promised administrative and criminal charges for the officers involved.
