  7. Chapter 49. Dress To Impress
  8.
  9. Not many things could serve to make Pyrrha Nikos nervous.
  10.
  11. She was a very refined young woman, and wasn't easily flustered or unnerved.
  12.
  13. But if there was one thing that could make her fingers twiddle, it was a pretty girl. More specifically, the one she was now dating.
  14.
  15. To many, it had seemed like Weiss had been the more nervous one between the two of them, since she'd been harboring a crush on Pyrrha for many weeks, and everyone had seemed to know about it.
  16.
  17. But little had people known that Pyrrha had been crushing on Weiss for just as long, if not longer, and equally as hard. She'd just been much more careful about concealing her feelings, for fear that she might hurt or embarrass Weiss if she were to reveal them and discover her friend only wanted to keep their relationship on a platonic level.
  18.
  19. But after a bit of poking and prodding from their close friends, the two girls had eventually come together, after much blushing and concern.
  20.
  21. They'd only officially started dating last weekend, and Pyrrha had to admit that not much had changed between them since then other than the fact that now they could hold hands and kiss one another whenever they pleased. Other than that, they still did the same activities together during the week, such as texting and video chatting when they couldn't get away from their houses to meet up in person.
  22.
  23. But they'd planned to have their first date today, on Saturday afternoon. And Pyrrha hadn't really been feeling the pressure until last night.
  24.
  25. She'd been fretting about what to wear for several hours now, in addition to having been fretting all yesterday evening as well. If there was one thing in this world that could make her nervous, it was her own girlfriend.
  26.
  27. Or, rather, it wasn't Weiss per say, but the prospect of going out with her, dating her, being her girlfriend. It wasn't that Weiss was intimidating, or that Pyrrha felt she wasn't good enough for her. But she felt she needed to do her best in every little thing she did, more so than she normally might have.
  28.
  29. And nothing was more nerve-wracking than trying to decide what to wear for her first date ever with her new girlfriend.
  30.
  31. Pyrrha hadn't only been thinking about it all through the night, but all this morning as well. She was still in her sleepwear at present, pulling open her dresser drawers and closet doors to peer inside and paw through her available selection, trying to configure what pieces would look best if worn together.
  32.
  33. But she wasn't sure if she should dress fancily, or casually, to impress, or just to have fun.
  34.
  35. Heaving a sigh, she glanced at her alarm clock.
  36.
  37. "Well, at least I've still got a few hours to decide. Perhaps if I think it over while I'm in the shower."
  38.
  39. So she tried to do just that, letting her mind run over her selection of clothing while she was washing her hair.
  40.
  41. In her mind, she considered how she might look in various different tops paired with various different bottoms or skirts. But while she came up with quite a few good combinations, she just couldn't configure an outfit that she knew 100% would be right for today's occasion.
  42.
  43. By the time she'd dried herself off and pulled her nightgown back on, she was no closer to a decision than when she'd stepped in.
  44.
  45. This wasn't working. She wasn't going to decide anything on her own, or if she did, it probably wouldn't be the best option she chose.
  46.
  47. It was time to call in some professional help.
  48.
  49. Well, professional in her opinion, anyway.
  50.
  51. She grabbed her phone and scrolled down a bit, though she didn't have to go far, since her favorites were right at the top of her list. Though of course, that didn't really help very much, considering the fact that she favorited all of her contacts.
  52.
  53. She scrolled until she found Yang's number, then typed out a quick text.
  54.
  55. Good morning, Yang! I hope you're doing well. I was just wondering if maybe you could give me a few pointers on something? Only if you've got the time and it wouldn't be a hassle!
  56.
  57. She sent her message, then began to brush her hair as she waited for a response. It was about five minutes later when she got one, and she assumed that it had only taken so long because Yang was probably still in bed half-asleep.
  58.
  59. Mornin'. Sure I can try to help. What's up?
  60.
  61. Pyrrha's fingers started to tremble a little nervously as she spelled out the reply.
  62.
  63. I'll be going on my first date with Weiss today, and I just don't know what to wear...
  64.
  65. That time, Yang responded in seconds.
  66.
  67. Say no more I'm on my way and I'm brining reinforcements.
  68.
  69. Puzzled, Pyrrha titled her head as she sent out a reply.
  70.
  71. Reinforcements? What do you mean?
  72.
  73. But she didn't receive an answer in text form.
  74.
  75. Rather, fifteen minutes later, she got her response in a much more literal sense.
  76.
  77. She was still in her nightgown, her damp hair loose and wavy as she ran barefoot to answer the knock on her door.
  78.
  79. "Yang!" she exclaimed even before turning the knob. "You didn't have to come all the way here! You could've just texted-"
  80.
  81. As soon as the door was opened, she was cut off by a big, friendly hug from her best friend.
  82.
  83. "Don't sweat it, Pyrrha! It's my pleasure to come help if you need it! 'Specially for something like this! Right, Coco?"
  84.
  85. "Coco?"
  86.
  87. Pyrrha returned Yang' hug but peered over her friend's shoulder to see she wasn't alone. Coco stood there, her brown hair flawlessly styled, the lick of red giving a splash of color just enough to draw in the eye.
  88.
  89. She was dressed in the latest – and probably most expensive – fall fashion, a loose blouse, a short skirt, and boots that ended just above her knees, framing a few inches of bare skin on her thighs. She hooked a finger at the bridge of her shades and pulled them down to look at Pyrrha directly.
  90.
  91. "Morning, Nikos. Heard you could use some help."
  92.
  93. Pyrrha flashed a look at Yang, now understanding what she'd meant by bringing reinforcements.
  94.
  95. "Ah, yes! Absolutely! Any advice you two fashion gurus could offer me would be very much appreciated!"
  96.
  97. "All right then." Coco dipped her head. "May we?"
  98.
  99. "Oh, yes! Please come right in, both of you!"
  100.
  101. Pyrrha was a little bashful to be inviting them into her home when she herself was still barefoot in her sleepwear. Coco looked absolutely stunning as always, and even Yang's casual shorts and denim jacket made a simple outfit look complicated.
  102.
  103. Both visitors removed their shoes and boots before following Pyrrha back to her bedroom.
  104.
  105. "Can I offer you two some water?" she inquired. "It's the least I can do since you came all this way."
  106.
  107. "No need!" Yang assured her. "Only reward we need is to see you have a great first date with Weiss!"
  108.
  109. "Oh?" Coco hummed. "Is that what this is about? Trying to impress the new girlfriend, eh?"
  110.
  111. Blushing slightly, Pyrrha turned her face away.
  112.
  113. "Well... I'm not exactly sure if I've got to impress her or anything like that. She never makes me feel pressured that I've got to do that. It's just that I want to look nice for her. That's all."
  114.
  115. The brunette nodded thoughtfully.
  116.
  117. "I get it. Not sure what kind of combo would be best for the first date. You wanna look be spiffy, but not too fancy, causal but not too laid-back."
  118.
  119. "What do you guys plan on doing, if you don't mind my asking?" Yang wondered.
  120.
  121. Pyrrha shuffled her bare feet.
  122.
  123. "Well... we didn't exactly have a set plan in mind yet. We were going to decide together today after meeting up. But I was thinking I might take her to a movie, and maybe we could do some shopping before going to dinner. How does that sound?"
  124.
  125. "Sounds perfect to me!" Yang replied. "I know she'll love it!"
  126.
  127. "And that helps us decide what you should wear," Coco added. "So you two will probably be in a dark theater for the beginning of the afternoon, then out and about in the light later in the evening. So we should start by finding you some clothes that'd look best in an evening setting."
  128.
  129. "Oh, wow..." Pyrrha mumbled. "I'd never even considered anything like that. I never knew there was so much thought that needs to go into this!"
  130.
  131. "Well," Coco shrugged. "Not all of us are as fashionably-gifted as others."
  132.
  133. Pyrrha laughed at the tease and bumped her friend's shoulder. From there, Yang and Coco helped her go through her clothes.
  134.
  135. "Now listen," Coco instructed. "Shoes might be the most important part of your outfit. If you're gonna be doing a lot of walking, then definitely no high heels."
  136.
  137. "Not that you'd need 'em, anyway," Yang put in.
  138.
  139. "Exactly," Coco agreed. "I'd say 1-inch heels or flats for you. I can tell ya right now that Schnee's probably gonna be wearing some fancy shoes that make her ankles red, and if she needs to be carried up the steps at the end of the night, you gotta be ready for it."
  140.
  141. Pyrrha's cheeks turned red at the thought of carrying Weiss like a princess. But she shook herself off and paid attention to their lessons.
  142.
  143. "Right. Got it." Pyrrha picked up a pair of brown flats and set them aside for wearing.
  144.
  145. For the next part, Yang began.
  146.
  147. "Now for the bottom part of your outfit. Well it's no secret that Weiss is a little on the vertically-challenged spectrum, so you wouldn't wanna make her feel even shorter than she actually is. Wearing pants might be a good formality move, but it makes you look taller than you actually are."
  148.
  149. "But a mini skirt could be too suggestive for a first date," Coco cut in. "Plus, you might get chilly later in the evening."
  150.
  151. "But a longer skirt is too old-fashioned," Yang pitched in. "So what do we do?"
  152.
  153. Pyrrha had been so caught up in their back-and-forth explanations that she didn't realize she'd been asked a question.
  154.
  155. "Hm? Oh! What do we do?"
  156.
  157. "Compromise." Coco sifted through a pile of Pyrrha's clothes and pulled out a brown mini-skirt and a pair of tan leggings. "Something like this would be perfect for you today. Humble, but still attractive."
  158.
  159. Pyrrha nodded, accepted the clothes, and laid them over the shoes she'd chosen.
  160.
  161. "Alright," Coco went on. "Now for the top. It's not too cold outside yet, so I'd say definitely stick with a blouse of some kind. Bring a jacket for later tonight, but don't wear it until you have to."
  162.
  163. "I'd even recommend a scarf," Yang said. "Because knowing Weiss, she's gonna wear some pretty little dress and forget that the temperature actually drops when the sun goes down. So the scarf'll keep you considerably warm, and you can offer the jacket to her!"
  164.
  165. "Oh, good choice, Xiao-Long," Coco commended her before turning to Pyrrha. "She's right. You always get props for warming her up if she gets cold."
  166.
  167. "Even if she won't admit it!" Yang said.
  168.
  169. "I... I see!" Pyrrha was trying to get on the same level as them and comprehend it all. They knew what they were talking about, that was for sure, but she was just trying to make sense of everything for herself.
  170.
  171. The three of them decided on a light orange blouse for Pyrrha along with a golden scarf that had a dull sheen to it. Going together with her hair, it would ensure she matched the season.
  172.
  173. Once her entire outfit had been decided, Pyrrha retreated to her bathroom to change. She pulled on the leggings and skirt, then stepped into her shoes before putting on her blouse and scarf. She tied her hair into a low ponytail and pulled it over one shoulder to give a more casual appearance than the usual high ponytail.
  174.
  175. "Alright," she called out. "I'm finished."
  176.
  177. "Great!" Yang replied. "Let's see it!"
  178.
  179. Pyrrha straightened herself up before opening the door and stepping out. Yang whistled as soon as she saw her, and Coco pulled her shades down to get a better look.
  180.
  181. "Damn, girl."
  182.
  183. "You look amazing, Pyrrha," Yang grinned. "Weiss is gonna fall head over heels all over again!"
  184.
  185. "You really think so?" Pyrrha folded her hands before herself and twiddled her fingers nervously. "I hope this is okay."
  186.
  187. "Pyrrha, listen to me," Yang reasoned, patting a hand on her shoulder. "You could go out wearin' a wet paper bag and Weiss would still think you look better than anyone else on earth. Trust me."
  188.
  189. "I think it's the same for me," she confessed. "I think Weiss would look wonderful in anything."
  190.
  191. "See?" Yang smirked, nudging her friend. "That's what it means to be in love!"
  192.
  193. "Thank you, Yang." Pyrrha pulled her friend in for another hug. "And thank you as well, Coco. I'm sorry the two of you came out of your way for me this morning."
  194.
  195. "Not at all." Coco waved her hand dismissively. "It was our pleasure."
  196.
  197. Pyrrha thanked them both again as she gathered her purse as well as a small jacket to bring along with her for the evening. And it wasn't long after that when she received another knock on her door.
  198.
  199. "Oh! She's here!" Pyrrha gasped. "Again, thank you two so much!"
  200.
  201. "No prob!" Yang smiled. "We'll walk out with you and then hit the road."
  202.
  203. Pyrrha led them to the front door where she paused to adjust her clothes and hair a bit. She took in a deep breath before opening it up.
  204.
  205. Weiss stood before her in a charming white dress and fancy shoes, just as Yang and Coco had anticipated. Her long silver hair was all down, except for a small ponytail gathered in the center to sit over the free locks. That was adorned by a diamond hair clip to match her necklace and earrings.
  206.
  207. The second she saw Pyrrha, Weiss' lips broke out into a beaming smile.
  208.
  209. "Pyrrha!"
  210.
  211. The taller girl reflected the grin and opened her arms immediately.
  212.
  213. "Weiss!"
  214.
  215. Weiss wasted no time in hurrying forward and throwing her arms around her. Pyrrha lifted her up slightly and twirled her once. Weiss giggled into her collar, sighing happily, as though she'd been waiting years for this moment.
  216.
  217. Perhaps she really had.
  218.
  219. Coco and Yang smiled as they watched for a minute, but soon decided their work here was done, and headed off together.
  220.
  221. After a moment, Weiss and Pyrrha stepped apart, but not by much. Weiss' eyes darted over her girlfriend with adoration.
  222.
  223. "You look positively stunning."
  224.
  225. Pyrrha soaked in the compliment, even more gleeful since it had come from Weiss.
  226.
  227. "And you look beautiful, as always!"
  228.
  229. "Flatterer."
  230.
  231. "It's true!"
  232.
  233. Pyrrha leaned down to kiss her cheek softly. Weiss returned the gesture just as sweetly.
  234.
  235. From there, they moved to stand side by side, their hands coming together in a comfortable grip.
  236.
  237. It was going to be the best first date ever.
  238.
  239. ----------------
  240.
  241. A/N: I like the idea of Weiss being shy around Pyrrha but I really like the reverse idea as well.
