  1. The grandfather's clock didn't seem to have survived the damage it took. Its shattered face read eleven minutes past five.
  2.
  3. John woke up at 8:00 to the sound of his alarm clock. He lay in bed for a few minutes so that he wouldn't feel groggy getting up. After shaking the last bits of sleep off himself, he put on his glasses and took a look around his room. "What on Earth happened here?" he thought upon seeing the mess, which he knew wasn't there when he went to sleep last night. The grandfather's clock was broken, but that was the least of John's concerns. The room's current state presented a diverse array of questions - from urgent ones like "Where the hell are my keys, wallet and cellphone?" to more mundane ones like "Why did whoever made this mess arrange the books in such an unusual fashion?". Calling the arrangement unusual, however, isn't very descriptive. It was a very intricately constructed...kennel, for lack of a better word. A kennel of books. Quite obviously, the creature it's intended for, if any, must be very well-read or really like reading. John found that both of these applied to him, and chuckled, but the more urgent concerns brought him back - he needed to find his wallet, for one. He decided to leave the arrangement of books be for a moment and began cleaning the rest.
  4.
  5. It was tricky to get around with the bookhouse in place, as it took up quite a bit of space in John's room. But nevertheless he started picking up the numerous sheets of paper that were scattered all over the floor, and started sorting them into 3 piles - important papers went into one pile, waste went into the second, blank paper into the third. A few minutes into the process he found his wallet and cellphone buried in a huge stack of blank paper. After a few more minutes, the three piles on the table grew half a meter tall, and all the paper on the floor was gone.
  6.
  7. John now took a closer look at the bookhouse, and stepped inside. It's a shame he didn't bring his flashlight with him, as, beyond the light coming from the outside, there was no light inside the house, which seemed eerily bigger than it looked from the outside. John heard a quiet thump behind him. Upon turning he realised that the entrance had collapsed, leaving him sealed inside. He tried pushing on the books, but their arrangement made them exceptionally strong - enough that he couldn't demolish the wall.
  8.
  9. A few minutes later, John's eyes got accustomed to the darkness. He began to look around in search of something other than the walls, but the room looked empty. He could see the walls to his left and right a few meters away, and behind him, but the fourth wall was too far away for him to see. Naturally, he walked forward.
  10.
  11. The room turned out to be a very long corridor. John had been walking for what felt like half an hour when he noticed that the ceiling, which seemed around five meters tall when he first entered, was now just a few centimeters away from him. And just as he noted that fact, he heard a soft click, and felt the floor under him disappear.
  12.
  13. The next thing John knew was that he was in yet another room, just as dark as the first corridor. Looking up proved fruitless as this room did not seem to have any ceiling at all. But at least all four of its walls were within sight - although there were no light sources to be seen anywhere. An object caught John's attention, prompting him to take a closer look. Upon closer inspection it turned out to be a cube-shaped table with some writing on top. Due to the virtually nonexistent lighting, he pulled out his phone and used its screen like a flashlight. The writing read:
  14.
  15. WHY ARE YOU HERE?
  16. HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO SEE ANYTHING WITH VIRTUALLY NO LIGHT IN THE VISIBLE RANGE HITTING YOUR EYES?
  17. SURELY YOU COULDN'T HAVE DEVELOPED INFRARED VISION?
  18.
  19. "Well, certainly there *is* visible light in here now", he thought. "This does pose a good question, though. How was I able to see? Hmmm..."
  20.
  21. John was interrupted from his thoughts by a shrieking sound coming from somewhere. The noise grew louder and louder, but nothing seemed to be entering his visual field. Then he heard a loud thump, and his vision and hearing both blacked out.
  22.
  23. The next thing he knew, he was lying in his bed again. He pulled the alarm clock toward himself to find out it was 10:00. He said, out loud:
  24.
  25. "What the fudge just happened?"
