- 2015-08-18 Writing: adjective clauses
- ---
- Princess Di, who died in 1997, was admired by many people.
- clause: a group of words with a subject and a verb
- adjective: a word describing a noun
- adjective clause: a clause describing a noun (it gives more information about a noun)
- “who died in 1997” has commas because it is extra information, not necessary to identify the person we’re talking about (her name identifies her already)
- ---
- An adjective clause is a clause which gives more information about a noun.
- In this case there are no commas, because without it I don’t know what clause I’m talking about.
- ---
- “which” = things
- “who” = people
- “that” = things or people, but not after a comma
- What was the name of the princess that died in 1997? (no comma -> “that” is okay)
- ---
- p. 179 practice 6 - with a partner, add “who” or “which” as necessary to complete the sentences
- 1 which (= marriages)
- 2 who (= parents)
- 3 who (= matchmaker)
- 4 which (= meeting)
- 5 who (= man or woman)
- 6 which (= marrying for love)
- 7 who (= couples)
- 8 who (= people)
- Marrying for love, which is the custom, doesn’t guarantee happiness.
- “which” = the action of marrying for love
- Marrying for love, which is the strongest emotion, doesn’t guarantee happiness.
- “which” = love
- ---
- Seven people used to live in our house, which only had four bedrooms.
- “which” = our house
- Seven people used to live in our house, which sometimes caused arguments.
- “which” = the fact that seven people used to live in our house
- ---
- Homework: read p. 180 (about using commas), and do practice 7 (A and B) on p. 181
