49. A race of non-corporeal, parasitic aliens who go from planet to planet looking for hosts have come to Earth and basically taken over the human race. It's believed that, once inside a body, all memories of the host human are gone. Some few free humans remain hidden from them, forming a resistance group. When an alien Seeker captures a girl named Melanie and puts a Wanderer in her body, she hopes to find out where the remaining humans are gathered, but Melanie, a strong fighter able to converse with the alien in her commandeered body, convinces the Wanderer to say nothing. Disappointed by the lack of progress (though suspecting an empathy for the human), the Seeker informs the Wanderer that she'll be removed and placed in a new host while she herself will enter Melanie. With human lives at risk, Melanie convinces Wanderer to run away and hide out with the humans, but finding them doesn't mean they'll allow an alien presence among them. Jared (Melanie's boyfriend) wants her dead, but Jeb (Melanie's uncle) wants to wait, and Ian, tasked with guarding her, finds himself siding with Jeb. As Ian begins to fall for Melanie, a strange love triangle develops, with Ian wanting Wanderer (inhabiting Melanie's body), Jared wanting Melanie (imprisoned inside her own body), and no one knowing any way to separate the two without killing both.
 50. When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.
 51. When I heard that this film was based on a book by Stephenie Meyer, the author responsible for Twilight, I cringed. But, having seen the film, I can say being honestly surprised. I'm actually ever the slightest bit interested in the book.

And yeah, you can kind of see Meyer's handiwork in this one. Her weird fixation on love triangles over anything else is still there, as is the romance with a supernatural/extraterrestrial/non-human entity. And despite flipping around the roles and making the non-human a female in this version, the meeker part in the romance is still a woman. And this coming from a female author. Comforting, isn't it.

But it's still a surprisingly good scifi movie. Sure it could have been better had the focus not been on the romance, but that's a stylistic choice and not an outright flaw. Personally I didn't need the romance in this movie, but I can see how someone could be of the exact opposite opinion and still be completely right in having that opinion. It's a romantic scifi film, appreciate it for what it is.

What I like the most, however, is the idea and the moral dilemmas they get to examine through it. Basically aliens have taken over Earth by taking over humans, one at a time. Think yeerks from Animorphs, but with more altruistic intentions. And because of this benign takeover, Earth is flourishing. Yet the only humans with any free will left are those that have not been taken over, or those few who manage to retain their identity through the takeover.

And this leads to the quandary. Are the aliens allowed to take over if we're clearly destroying our own planet? Why not offer help instead? What if the host retains his/her memories? Who is the person occupying the human body? Is it still the human? The alien? Can it be both?

The film doesn't delve terribly deep into these question - again, the romance is obviously much more important - but it gives us some opinions and answers, while asking new question. And that made the film worth watching in my opinion. If Meyer can actually even hint at these kinds of dilemmas, she actually has some worth as an author.

The Host is worth a watch if you liked the Twilight movies, because it contains much of the same themes and elements, but it's also worth a watch if you couldn't stand the Twilight movies and are interested to see if anything can be salvaged from the formula.
 52. I haven't read any of Stephanie Myers books or seen any of her Vampire movies, but I can see why she is so successful. Great, well written characters! I loved the original twist on the "invasion" story of The Host too, it makes you wonder how it's going to finish. The Host is a lot slower than most science fiction of its genre and I can see why many "art critics" on rottentomatoes have panned it, but has the time to explore the romantic twists and the interesting characters, which there are many. All the characters have believable motivations for almost every action they take too. I've seen it again since and liked it just as much, especially since there is no bad language or sex (for a change)...which means..I can show it to anyone.
 53. An invasion of the body snatchers is preferable to realizing that the true horror perpetrated here is not on the characters but on the audience.
