- So... I'm sure many of you guys remember a few months ago when I asked you for advice on what to do with Twilight Princess speedrunning. To refresh your memory a bit: I started running TP around the end of 2011, doing any% RTA in hopes of getting a new run on SDA. I did runs from about November 2011 to April 2012, and was coming pretty close to a time I was happy with, but around April 2012 Pheenoh started running the game, and that messed with my plans quite a bit. As I've periodically rambled on about for years now, speedrunning has gradually changed from being a project-based endeavor - where runners were basically like volunteers doing runs of a game for the purposes of getting a representative run for the community on the SDA page, and usually there was only one person (maybe two) working on one category at once - to a much more competitive enterprise where World Records and individual achievement have taken priority, and each category now has hundreds of people running it either for personal bests or to be #1 on the leaderboards.
- My TP "career" was during the transition period where this paradigm shift was happening, and the result was that competition suddenly showed up on my doorstep when I wasn't expecting it. I didn't want to be competing with someone else for something like an SDA run, especially someone like Pheenoh who was way more motivated than I was, so I quit running the any% RTA and just started messing with glitches and running old routes during the summer of 2012. Because of a lack of any clear goals for running TP in the absence of an SDA run to do, I started losing interest in the game and stopped playing it altogether by the end of that summer. I tried out running other games more or less casually over the course of the next year, until real life issues and lack of motivation drew me away from speedrunning entirely.
- I tried to get back into TP a few times over the next couple of years, but each time I lost motivation quickly and gave up within a couple weeks, mostly because I was suffering from really severe depression due to the aforementioned real life issues. Early last year, I started recovering and getting back into speedrunning as a way of trying to recapture a happier time in my life and relive old memories. I never really got "closure" on Twilight Princess since I never accomplished my goal of getting the new SDA run up, and since no one else was going to do it (since no one cares about SDA anymore) I figured it was time to come back to the game and finally finish what I started. Unfortunately for me, the landscape is quite different now, and I've been struggling with figuring out what exactly I want to do with the game in terms of what category to run.
- Essentially, the any% RTA run that I ran back in the day has stagnated. The WR has gotten so competitive and optimized that even the smallest mistakes or bad RNG can blow all your chances of getting a good time, and the run has gotten way harder on top of that. There are way more run killers now, including but not limited to:
- 1. Having to get Back in Time (1/30 second window) a second time on the castle rooftops as wolf in order to set up the Early Monkeys glitch
- 2. Having to press A on a specific frame (1/30 second window) in order to jump into Kakariko Gorge before Midna forces you to warp, and if you fail it you lose an entire minute and your run is dead (Gorge Void)
- 3. A really precise boomerang target within a very small time window in order to LJA onto the Kakariko Gorge fence before a yellow rupee disappears, and if you fail it your run is dead (Rupee Roll)
- 4. A really precise clip into Lakebed Temple in the twilight that is really inconsistent unless you do a slow setup, and if you fail it you drown and the run is dead (Pillar Clip)
- 5. Fighting Morpheel without the Zora Armor (this was not in the RTA run when I ran the game because Pillar Clip didn't exist yet)
- 6. INSANELY precise and inconsistent jump off a pillar in Arbiter's Grounds to skip the first Poe and do the dungeon backwards (Poe 1 Skip)
- 7. Aerolfos Skip in City in the Sky is basically required now (similar to Rupee Roll in that you have to aim precisely in a limited amount of time)
- All of this on its own would be bad enough. But an arguably more serious problem is the quality of the any% route itself. Because of the new tricks that have been found over the past 4 years - particularly stuff like Faron Escape, Early Monkeys, and Gorge Skip - a lot of the interesting and fun parts of the game that were still left are now skipped entirely, especially in the first half of the run, and the result is that the run has become pretty dull and uninteresting in my opinion:
- 1. Faron tears are completely skipped since you can escape the forest and skip warping the bridge. This means Faron Twilight is just a lot of running and backtracking.
- 2. Almost the entire Forest Temple is skipped; you only go in the first 2 rooms and use the Early Monkeys glitch to skip right to boomerang, then immediately leave.
- 3. The whole sequence of Eldin and Lanayru Twilights is done in a really weird and messy way; since you don't need to warp the bridge, you use the forced map warp to Faron to do Lanayru gate clip, the first part of Lakebed up to Clawshot, and Lanayru twilight up to where you have to warp the rock. Then you do Eldin twilight, warp the rock and continue Lanayru. Not so much "uninteresting", but for some reason I find this sequence to be aesthetically unappealing, probably because it's so chaotic and all over the place.
- 4. Since both Forest and Mines are skipped, and the boomerang and Clawshot interludes are so short, all 3 Twilights are basically done consecutively with no real dungeons separating them. This means almost everything between EMS and the end of Lanayru Twilight is essentially just running around collecting tears, which, while not *completely* boring (there are some hard tricks mixed in, like Gorge Skip and Pillar Clip, and Eldin tears can actually be pretty fun), is still pretty dull compared to how it used to be.
- 5. The novelty of skipping Zora Armor has pretty much worn off by now, and most of the coolest parts of it from Jiano's old run have been eliminated ever since Parax's segmented run from 2011. The strategy for Morpheel without Zora Armor has been streamlined and optimized to where it's barely different from fighting him without the armor (just with more annoying RNG) - you can even beat him with only the cutscene float air refill if you're lucky and are able to regrab him twice in a row. The pillar clip into Lakebed in the Twilight is pretty cool, but it's such a small thing that it's not worth losing Telma escort IMO (which was always one of my favorite parts of old any%).
- 6. Most of the second half of City in the Sky is skipped now because of a trick to avoid the trigger that turns the fans on near the beginning of the dungeon, which lets you get the boss key early from the main room by clawshotting up. Not a huge loss, but I really miss those LJAs.
- None of these would be fatal on their own, but put together (and combined with all the skips we already had before), they result in an any% run that, in my opinion, is honestly pretty dull overall. It's not terrible, but compared to what we used to have in 2011 and before, it's a pretty significant downgrade IMO. The fact that it's been done over and over by hundreds of runners on stream thousands of times doesn't help, either - it gets stale after a while. I think it would be really cool as a segmented run or TAS, and an any% segmented may be something that I could do as a future project later on (although I think TLO has that covered for now), but I really don't think I wanna work my ass off and drive myself crazy to get the RTA record in an insanely difficult, highly optimized, and highly competitive category that's already been done to death and really isn't that interesting to me in its current form. I know I could just get a run I'm personally happy with and submit that to SDA even if it's not the record, but I really don't want to submit a run that isn't the best of its kind available (why would anyone watch my run when they can just watch the actual record on Youtube?), and that doesn't really remedy the fact that I just don't find the run interesting or enjoyable enough to put a lot of time into it.
- The way I see it, this leaves me with basically 3 alternatives, all of which are better than any% RTA but have problems of their own that kind of push me away from them:
- 1. Any% No Save+Quit. This one is very similar to the old any% RTA I used to run in 2012, and is overall a more interesting run (it doesn't really have any of those problems with dullness that I listed above, except maybe 2 and 6 to a significantly lesser degree). Unfortunately, it still has a decent number of the run killers I mentioned (2, 3, and 6 are still there), and you also have to push Bokoblins to Trill which is really annoying. The main problem, though, is that I find it damn near impossible to take this category seriously - even though Jiano's run was also a No Save+Quit run since it was done in 2009, it just feels like an arbitrary restriction now that SDA allows save+quits in single segment runs. Every time I practice No Save+Quit I feel like I'm wasting my time - I'm very aware that I'm doing a second-rate category that isn't taken very seriously anymore, and Link not having the Hylian Shield on his back is a constant reminder of that fact.
- 2. All Dungeons. This one has a lot more meat to it than Any% RTA and is significantly easier, and it also has stuff like Goron Mines and Temple of Time that I have really really fond memories of having done during that summer of 2012 when I was doing old routes. Even better, it can still beat Jiano's 3:56 run by at least 3-4 minutes just because the game is so much more optimized now. My problem with All Dungeons is that I've never really seen it as a "serious" category - when it first became a thing in 2012, I wasn't a big fan of it because I felt it skipped too much of the game still to be a good "No Major Skips" category, so I always kind of saw it as a cheap knockoff. Even today, All Dungeons to me kind of feels like "Any% & Knuckles", or any% with detours. The basic route outline is very similar to any% RTA, complete with full EMS, Zora Armor skip, Early City, and so on. The only two dungeons you never visit in any% (Goron Mines and Temple of Time) are completed late in the game after you've already done everything they're supposed to be requirements for, making them feel like arbitrarily tacked-on unnecessary detours that are only done because the category rules say so. And the two dungeons you do visit (but don't finish) in any% are still pretty short with too much skipped (IMO) to really feel "complete". Overall, I find it hard to see this category as something "serious" that belongs on SDA, so I can't really get excited about it unfortunately even if it does have some cool stuff in it.
- 3. HD version. Twilight Princess HD was released earlier this month, and it's basically a direct port of the GameCube version with improved visuals. It uses the same engine as the GC version, so most glitches still work, but a lot of stuff has been patched - most notably EMS, Map Glitch, and Ordon gate clip - which actually makes the run much easier and closer to the late 2007 route, which I loved running back in summer of 2012. Additionally, they made the Tears of Light sections shorter (fewer tears) and faster paced (don't have to wait for the tear to materialize in order to collect it), which is pretty cool. The projected optimal time for HD version, despite the patches, is about 3:40, which beats Jiano's run by 16 minutes(!), and I've already got confirmation from SDA that they would be fine with putting HD version on the same game page as the GC and Wii versions. My main problem here is that, because of these glitches being patched and the route basically reverting to 2007 pre-EMS status, I feel like it would be doing a disservice to SDA if I submitted a run of this. I originally set out to create a successor to Jiano's run, and this doesn't seem like a good successor to Jiano's run - if anything, it seems like it'd be a downgrade. The only way it'd be an improvement would be that it shows just how far the game has come in terms of movement and smaller glitches over the past 7 years - that the first ever EMS run can now be beaten by 16 minutes using the same basic route from the pre-EMS run that it was a 51-minute improvement over. I guess that alone would be pretty cool, but... I don't know.
- (UPDATE: The second half of Goron Mines is now skipped in HD version, which has pushed me further away from running it. Most of the appeal of HD version for me was its similarity to the 2007 route, and the new skip changes the route significantly and is a pretty significant loss of game content. In general I find the new HD route to be pretty ugly from an aesthetic point of view, so I'm really not too inclined to run it anymore.)
- I guess I'm just looking for advice on what to do. I'm an incredibly indecisive person, and the fact that I have OCD and have a pathological fear of being wrong or making the wrong decision doesn't help. In the end though, I'm afraid that there may not even BE a good decision to make here. I don't know if ANY category - not even any% RTA - is really capable of accomplishing what I really want to accomplish. I guess what I really want is to just be back in early 2012 doing the old any% RTA route, when I was the only one seriously running the game and I felt like I was doing something important that no one else was gonna do. Obviously I can't do that - unless I somehow invent time travel - so I guess what I'm really doing here is trying desperately to recapture a lost time that doesn't exist anymore and getting upset because I'm realizing that it simply isn't possible.
