- Rayuichi Sakamoto the Japanese composer is known for his large scores for movies like The Last Emperor, The Revenant and The Sheltering Sky among others, but he is also an environmental activist through his compositions. He has stated in an interview, “We must take care of our environment. We think of the environment in global terms but it is too far away from our lives. So, that makes us think there is nothing we can do about the global crisis. But you still eat every day; you breathe air and drink water. That is the environment within you and you are a part of it. Humans are emitting more CO2 but losing more trees. The two must be reconciled: to create less CO2, plant more trees – it is very simple!” Besides many other awards, he received the UN Environment Programme’s Echo Award for his groundbreaking work in eco-friendly touring and music distribution. In Out of Noise, he used the sound of glaciers and icebergs and sea sounds that he had recorded in the Arctic. Sakamoto devotes much of his time to environmental concerns, turning “Ego into Eco” in his words. Together with various colleagues he launched Zero Landmines project in 2001 and founded the organization More Trees devoted to protecting existing forests and planting new ones.
