- DO'S AND DONT'S OF LITTLE MAC By Ultra (And the Mac Discord)
- ------------------------------------------------
- DO:
- -Set your c-stick to Tilts. This way you can reliably pivot-cancel f-tilt/u-tilt for combos, mix-ups, etc. Plus this just decreases the chances of you accidentally inputting a smash attack when you wanted a tilt. But don't spam the c-stick as it has a tendency to lock up and not put inputs through. This won't happen UNLESS you rapidly flick the c-stick in succession.
- -Use lots of walking/speed adjustment (don't just only ever dash around or walk, change up your speed often.)
- -Learn when tech chases start with f-tilt and whether or not you can jab-lock your opponent with jab 1, jab 2, or dair. [Document in progress]
- -Read tech options; if your opponent misses techs a lot, then jab lock daf smash or d-tilt side-b them often. If they tech in place a lot then use smash attacks. If they do a directional tech then work on figuring out their pattern.
- -Use side-b first when recovering if you've been hit far away from stage. (Rarely should you use jump first.)
- -Use grabs if your opponent has a habit of holding shield (All attacks are unsafe on shield. Go for d-throw side-b at reliable percentages when under a platform. D-throw under platforms creates a tech chase situation, and side-b will cover all of their options. Otherwise you can go for a read and use u-smash or a full-jump d-air to jab-lock.)
- -Learn your worst Match-Ups and all of your options in that MU. (Go to the Little Mac discord and look through every channel with the match-ups you're interested in learning, or you can ask in Ultimate Dojo. There's way too much information to list.)
- -Use f-tilt for a reliable kill, or d-tilt side-b (learn when d-tilt side-b stops working reliably.)
- -Use platforms to your advantage. If you're playing a zoner/a character specializing in projectiles then you'd best pick Battlefield or Pokemon Stadium.
- -Use neutral b to heavy armor through multi-hit moves (If your opponent has a weak up-air or a multi-hit up special, you can use neutral b to land safely, but only use this if your opponent tends to chase you while you're airborne and are going for kills off the top.)
- -Use d-throw under Battlefield and Pokemon Stadium platforms to create a tech chase. (Can also be used as a set up for KO punch, but don't fish for it. But if you find the opportunity then go for it, otherwise don't even bother.)
- -Use d-tilt to scan your opponent for habits. (If your opponent immediately airdodges, then take note of if they airdodge the same way all the time or if they mix it up- punish this with daf smash to force a tech chase. If your opponent jumps, try to reliably cover their landings. If they do nothing, then they're susceptible to STUPID Mac combos like d-tilt daf smash. Also, if you d-tilt someone and they air-dodge while you have KO punch: they're fucked.)
- -Use pummel + back throw. Back throw does the most % out of all of Mac's grabs, pairing it with a pummel can potentially get you 15% or more from a grab. (It'll also kill at around 150% by the ledge without staling up to around Low-Heavyweight.)
- -Use d-tilt or usmash at ledge to hit someone who's lost their invulnerability. (Down-smash doesn't hit as reliably.)
- -Use ledge trumping, in the right situation you could potentially ledge trump --> side-b and kill pretty early, but don't bet your stock on it. Best method is to trump the other person and basically force them to go high to get back on stage, otherwise they'll be at your mercy when they're forced to regrab.
- -Use fully-charged neutral b after breaking someone's shield. Kills about as early as KO punch (if not slightly earlier at times.)
- -Use aerials (Responsibly). Fast-fall u-air is hard to hit but can combo into anything (KO punch included), nair is good for breaking out of strings, and fair can create tech chases.
- -Use counter to come back to stage. If your opponent never goes for fake-outs and their method of ledgeguarding is pretty straightforward, then use your counter to come back for free. However, don't do it too often, or make your timing predictable.
- -Space with f-tilt and sometimes f-smash. (IE: Run in, run back, throw out an f-tilt or f-smash to catch a run-in. Beware the endlag on f-smash can get you punished in some matchups.)
- -Use pivot-cancel f-tilt. To do a pivot cancel, run forward, flick the movement stick backward, and at the same time flick the c-stick to do an f-tilt, you'll slide forward really quickly and it's goo for throwing people off on just how close/far away you are.
- -Use Boost Grabs (Video here explaining how to do them because I can't summarize it well enough nor do I practice it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1If8eSLKwI Here's a video on a more advanced version of it too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1Q_ai23nZM)
- -Use d-tilt to grab projectiles. With the right timing you can even catch the Belmont's Holy Water (Which puts Mac in a VERY strong position if you hit them with it.) You can also snag R.O.B's gyro without accidentally running into it ten times and wondering why you aren't able to grab it.
- -Trample projectiles with f-tilt. Trample allows Little Mac to reflect/block some weaker projectiles (Projectiles like link's arrows and boomerangs, but not projectiles like fully charged shot/aura sphere/shadow ball) without having to take shield damage.
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- DON'T:
- -Spam smash attacks. Playing online might make you think you're safe from punishment because of your almost-constant super armor, but in offline play that shit is stupid easy to punish.
- -Opt for attacks on shield. All of Mac's attacks are negative on shield, if anything you'll be sligthly safe, but only in the case of your opponent having bad frame data.
- -Burn your jump early. Mac burning his jump early is basically the same as fast-falling right to the pit in 95% of scenarios.
- -Use up-b at random or to kill off the top when you're at medium or high percentages. Using and missing up-b at random or to be ballsy is going to result in an EASY smash attack read on you. Falling through platforms can sometimes save you however.
- -Fish for aerials. Fast-fall uair into most of Mac's toolkit is cool and all, and poking shield with nair might LOOK safe, and fishing for tech chases with f-air might seem optimal as a landing option, but not only are all of these unsafe and unreliable, they're also going to get you punished pretty quickly. Mac has options with them, but instead of putting yourself in the air as often as you can, you should instead just keep your distance and play optimally.
- -Do the same shit over and over again. (Unless it works?) The only combos you should use religiously are d-tilt f-tilt at 0/low percentages on the right characters and d-tilt side-b to kill or punish a tech-in-place/missed tech. Other than that, don't consistently go for untrue combos as you can and will be punished for doing so.
- -Jump onto stage with a counter. Seriously bros, jumping back onto stage and landing with a counter is going to make you as dumb as you look.
- -Punish shields with attacks. If their shield is at roughly half, then doing for daf-smash is common sense, but otherwise you should be opting for grabs, pummeling as much as you can, and then using back-throw for damage and d-throw under platforms to force a tech chase (at around 30-50% depending on character.)
- -Side-b when your opponent is off-stage. If your opponent is off-stage and you have burned neither your jump OR side-b, then this is the absolute safest time to use counter. Even if you get punished, you have a ton of potential to completely come back. Remember side-b has a lot of endlag and opens you up to VERY easy, hard-hitting punishes.
- -Recovery low very often. By recovering High, Super High, and Directly to Ledge often you minimize the chances of you being super-gimped. The end of little mac's up-b has a very tall hitbox, which makes it easy to hit you while the other person is on-stage. (Lucina/Marth is a good example, their d-tilt will very reliably poke your up-b hitbox and basically kill you instantly.)

- "How good am I at Little Mac?"
- Truth be told, you are simply and flatly not good enough until at least 90% of what's presented in this document are things you consistently do and have incorporated into your playstyle. To utilize Little Mac to his fullest is to use absolutely every tool he has to the best of its ability and know when you can use these tools without getting punished since nothing we have is safe.
- Make a mental checklist of everything you do and don't do that's on this list.
