  4. Look at the integrated reading materials from https://www.ets.org/Media/Tests/TOEFL/pdf/ibt_writing_sample_responses.pdf
  5.
  6. On Friday we came up with this outline:
  7. Intro: The lecture was about one company that had teams do new projects and what they discovered about the effectiveness of working in teams. They found many disadvantages of working in teams, in contrast to what the reading predicts.
  8. - The company found that many group members didn’t work enough, but they still got recognized as part of the team if the project was successful. This contradicts what the reading says about everyone in a group sharing responsibility for the work.
  9. - The reading says that teams will work faster because of the number of people and greater amount of resources available. However, the lecture says teams did not work faster, because it took a long time for them to reach consensus about what to do, and because they had to schedule many meetings to make decisions.
  10. - They found that one or two people would dominate decisions and negatively affect the rest of the group, in contrast to the reading, which says that everyone will feel better about contributing to group decisions.

  12. I was sleeping until 10am. = I woke up at 10.
  13. I was still sleeping at 10am. = I was asleep for a long time, including at 10.
  14.
  15. Everything was good until now. = Now it’s bad.
  16. Everything is still good. = Now it’s good.
  17. ---
  18. Look at the sample integrated writing responses. What are the problems with the level 1 responses?
  19.
  20. REMEMBER: the person reading your answers will only spend about 1-2 minutes reading. If it’s too difficult to understand what you’re trying to say in that time, you will get a low score.
  21. ---
  22. In the first level 2 response, the main problem is how the ideas connect to each other and to the reading and listening. The grammar is pretty good and it is an appropriate length, but it’s not clear how it answers the question.
  23.
  24. Additional level 3 response 2
  25. - clearly states that the lecture contradicts the reading about teamwork
  26. - three reasons why
  27. - conclusion is unclear and not related to the lecture or reading
  28.
  29. In general the level 3 responses are well-organized. They start stronger and end weaker because students probably ran out of time, but they’re pretty good overall.
  30. ---
  31. Level 5 Benchmark:
  32. - well organized with good transitions
  33. - points from the lecture are directly connected to points from the reading
