- hey everyone that my stories my
- 0:07
- intention are to tell the stories of
- 0:10
- America through my eyes and through the
- 0:13
- people I meet and I met a couple this
- 0:15
- evening and I said I said that I said
- 0:18
- I'd get all my stories from people I
- 0:20
- read nothing I get all my stories from
- 0:22
- people and he was he's going to know I'm
- 0:25
- talking about him now the gentleman was
- 0:28
- an architect who was sitting here and
- 0:30
- his wife was an English major and I
- 0:33
- asked what college are you from
- 0:36
- and they said Overland I said oh the
- 0:39
- conservatory the conservatory the
- 0:41
- conservatory just outside of Cleveland
- 0:43
- and they they they joke because he was
- 0:46
- an architect that she was an English
- 0:47
- major and I won't say their names and
- 0:51
- they said it was the joke
- 0:53
- at Overland what instrument do you play
- 0:54
- you know wasn't what what's your major
- 0:56
- is what instrument do you play because
- 0:57
- it's so well known for the conservatory
- 0:59
- but but there are some famous people one
- 1:03
- of them who happens to be the mayor of
- 1:05
- Eugene that I that they told me I didn't
- 1:08
- know was one of the graduates and Eugene
- 1:11
- is one of the highest populations for
- 1:13
- using bikes
- 1:15
- I think 20% which is like one of the top
- 1:19
- cities progressive cities for using
- 1:22
- reusing bikes and public transportation
- 1:25
- so so I like that
- 1:26
- that was good and the gentleman here was
- 1:31
- a little bit of a tougher nut to crack I
- 1:34
- always want to engage in conversation
- 1:36
- and his wife being an English major was
- 1:42
- well schooled and all the things I
- 1:45
- wasn't smart enough to learn being an
- 1:48
- English minor but
- 1:53
- through every through this art through
- 1:58
- this word through this word that we've
- 2:00
- been given right
- 2:01
- there are these stories and and she
- 2:05
- asked me what do you want to do I said
- 2:07
- I'm kind of an itinerant vagabond
- 2:10
- YouTube journalist and you know you want
- 2:12
- to change the world how do you want to
- 2:14
- change the world I said once Shakespeare
- 2:16
- quote at a time once Shakespeare quote
- 2:18
- at a time she said how do you spell your
- 2:20
- name at the end and I said me you know
- 2:22
- web to bees you know to bees or not to
- 2:24
- bees you know - to bees but I was really
- 2:29
- working on there
- 2:30
- she was expressive and she was giving me
- 2:33
- you know quotes from her days as and and
- 2:36
- her evolved thinking as an English major
- 2:40
- as a teacher and she was a teacher of
- 2:42
- the disabled the young kids disabled
- 2:45
- children and she didn't want to give
- 2:48
- that up early she wanted to she held
- 2:51
- that back and this is so true of this
- 2:54
- kind of sober soul from Ohio that comes
- 3:00
- and I said you know that these folks
- 3:04
- with dirt on their on their overalls but
- 3:07
- dreams but big dreams that they could go
- 3:10
- anywhere and have big dreams and I think
- 3:12
- I said that in the Saenz model and I
- 3:14
- very much believe it we talked about
- 3:15
- overland we talked about Kenyan we
- 3:17
- talked about Denison college and how
- 3:20
- they all had this kind of overachievers
- 3:24
- dream and what I was working on the guy
- 3:29
- I was working on him that's like he's
- 3:31
- got it he's got to give up some stuff on
- 3:33
- architecture so we got to Frank Lloyd
- 3:36
- Wright of course you know the easy go-to
- 3:38
- and falling water falling water and I
- 3:41
- said you know I've talked to a lot of
- 3:42
- architects to say falling water leaks
- 3:44
- and he goes oh that's an easy go -
- 3:47
- that's an easy criticism and for some
- 3:50
- reason I thought falling water was in
- 3:52
- Oak Park in Chicago but it's not it's
- 3:55
- about an hour out of Pittsburgh and it's
- 3:59
- one of the Kaufmann it would happen
- 4:01
- department stores and I guess this son
- 4:06
- of Kaufman the department store owner
- 4:08
- became a devotee of Frank Lloyd Wright
- 4:12
- because he was so ambitious in his his
- 4:18
- climbs architectural e and that's what I
- 4:22
- try to do in journalism I mean I know
- 4:24
- that is a ridiculous comparison kind of
- 4:27
- like you know chalk and cheese but but I
- 4:31
- do try to reach for something better
- 4:35
- something higher and and and try to
- 4:38
- embed I said you know there's no story I
- 4:41
- do without a Shakespeare quote and it's
- 4:43
- not me it's the crowd that provides me
- 4:46
- with the Shakespeare it's a crowd that
- 4:48
- provides me she was a big devotee of the
- 4:50
- bloom was very group and I had to go
- 4:53
- well that's Virginia Woolf
- 4:56
- that's ianforster right and she said no
- 5:00
- I can't remember she said that was not
- 5:03
- ianforster the wasteland and the lost
- 5:05
- generation but it was I want to say I
- 5:12
- can't remember but anyway I had this
- 5:16
- impression so we got to the architecture
- 5:18
- piece of this and I got this impression
- 5:20
- that well first of all I said have you
- 5:23
- heard of this guy named I heard of this
- 5:27
- guy named there's pretty famous guy the
- 5:29
- Spanish painter guy this Picasso hey
- 5:33
- yeah yeah he said yeah I've heard of
- 5:35
- Picasso and anyway I remember these
- 5:36
- globes these globes of lights with
- 5:41
- whatever this elm tree is I don't know
- 5:43
- whatever kind of elm tree or sycamore or
- 5:45
- whatever this is but I remember him
- 5:47
- being in a little town called Vova nog
- 5:49
- Vova nog it was kind of the last place
- 5:52
- that that he lived after he had had his
- 5:57
- 100 paramours and
- 6:00
- whatever and he just wanted to be quiet
- 6:03
- and tranquil and with the cicadas right
- 6:08
- so I thought
- 6:10
- you know I'm thinking all these poetic
- 6:13
- thoughts about Hastings and Hudson and
- 6:15
- hard by the Hastings and hard by Hudson
- 6:17
- and and then they told me this story of
- 6:19
- this painting group this influential
- 6:23
- school of thought painting the called
- 6:28
- cosplay cusp gosh I'm forgetting it out
- 6:33
- Copley cosplay copeley cosplay this is
- 6:38
- how the crowd helps George
- 6:40
- but Jacob cosplay anyway the Hudson
- 6:44
- School Hudson River School of painters
- 6:47
- and I think that came about because of
- 6:49
- full nice speculated of course as I do
- 6:51
- as Lee miss Lisa has said I conjecture
- 6:56
- and I do conjecture on the 1840s
- 6:59
- painters quite often but but I said you
- 7:03
- know the the steamboat probably made a
- 7:04
- lot of things because it was so
- 7:06
- difficult to go upstream and we saw a
- 7:10
- sailboat actually coming upstream the
- 7:12
- Hudson tonight there was so many things
- 7:14
- that were made economic where they
- 7:15
- weren't economically before by the
- 7:17
- steamboat and Fulton and so forth and
- 7:20
- did that enable props Lee crops Lee
- 7:24
- cropsey crop C crops Lee crop C Hudson
- 7:28
- school of painters did that enable the
- 7:31
- did that enable this whole Hastings on
- 7:34
- Hudson I normally don't get up to this
- 7:35
- kind of hoity-toity neighborhood usually
- 7:37
- down in the Bronx doing rat lines but
- 7:39
- tonight I came up here at Sunday night
- 7:41
- and I had my Teddy Roosevelt moment
- 7:45
- where I could be a I could be a
- 7:49
- progressive I could be a I could be a
- 7:53
- Hastings on Hudson progressive and I
- 7:55
- don't mean to do I don't mean to demean
- 7:57
- and these were just absolutely wonderful
- 7:58
- people but one of the things I said I
- 8:01
- got into the architecture we started
- 8:03
- talking about ambulant emulator and you
- 8:07
- know Barris tolls and all this stuff and
- 8:09
- relief and what I said what there's got
- 8:11
- to be some Greek you know my children
- 8:13
- havea for this there's always got to be
- 8:15
- some Greek you know that said you know a
- 8:18
- wash of concrete is not good and we need
- 8:20
- the relief
- 8:21
- we need ambulatory need things that
- 8:24
- protrude and things that recess and
- 8:26
- light and shadow and art and feasts for
- 8:29
- the eyes you know every building should
- 8:31
- be a feast for the eyes and they had
- 8:34
- talked about how they gone on all over
- 8:35
- Europe and visited places that they
- 8:38
- liked and didn't like but these were
- 8:41
- both Overland grads so deep so deep I
- 8:46
- could deep well like a deep Connecticut
- 8:49
- well I thought of Bill Buckley's
- 8:51
- Connecticut well with all its secrets
- 8:53
- where we had gotten invited to go to a
- 8:55
- farm-to-table breakfast with all the
- 8:58
- elite but all the elite of Connecticut I
- 9:01
- can't remember who invited us to do that
- 9:04
- but someone invited us to do a
- 9:06
- farm-to-table breakfast on will
- 9:08
- Buckley's estate next to the cross from
- 9:11
- the Rockefellers and all this and of
- 9:13
- course Rockefellers estates not too much
- 9:14
- further up River at Tarrytown I've had
- 9:17
- friends who swim in that pool so it's
- 9:21
- just this interesting mix between
- 9:23
- incredible wealth and the Bronx which is
- 9:26
- the ratlines
- 9:27
- and I love moving between those two
- 9:29
- worlds but I told him I said you know
- 9:34
- what I'm gonna I'm gonna do a story I'm
- 9:37
- gonna do a story here it's gonna kind of
- 9:39
- be my end cap for the day it's not gonna
- 9:41
- have any content in news or whatever and
- 9:45
- I'm gonna call it hard by the Hudson you
- 9:48
- know hard by the Hudson you know that we
- 9:51
- are literally that's Hudson's by
- 9:55
- Hastings train station and we look down
- 10:01
- on it we look down on the Hudson tonight
- 10:03
- we saw the sailboats that could have
- 10:04
- gone up that river a hundred years ago
- 10:06
- we had a little incident here with an
- 10:08
- elevator and the fire department being
- 10:12
- called out and so we had our Hudson
- 10:14
- excitement but what the real takeaway
- 10:18
- for tonight the real surprise well first
- 10:20
- of all following water being in
- 10:21
- Pennsylvania the Kaufmann estate about a
- 10:23
- mile about an hour away from Pittsburgh
- 10:25
- that was the first like waker-upper the
- 10:27
- second one was
- 10:29
- that no that kind of American Gothic
- 10:32
- emulator the wood emulator you know the
- 10:36
- relief it was copied by the stonemasons
- 10:39
- it originated it originated in wood and
- 10:44
- I'm not gonna question a guy who he said
- 10:47
- I I did Overland architecture and I
- 10:51
- think he went to another you know
- 10:52
- graduate you know program and then I
- 10:56
- went into construction to have make a
- 10:57
- lift yeah but I can't really read the
- 11:05
- comments but I'm not here to make any
- 11:10
- money or promote any channel or have any
- 11:13
- fame or whatever I'm not gonna do this
- 11:18
- of course not gonna walk this tread
- 11:21
- these trails tell these stories for
- 11:26
- anything other than remembrance and not
- 11:32
- remembrance in a kind of a fatalistic
- 11:34
- way but I'm gonna smell the roses while
- 11:38
- I go right I mean how could I meet how
- 11:42
- could I mean two people from Overland
- 11:43
- these are places I've wanted to go I
- 11:46
- wish I was smart enough to go I wish I
- 11:47
- could go to Dennis and then speak French
- 11:49
- you know between basketball practices or
- 11:52
- Kenyan you know and being a literary
- 11:55
- scholar at Kenyan and speak Shakespeare
- 11:59
- at lunch break or have the musical you
- 12:04
- know immersion of an overland
- 12:09
- so that's my Ohio that's what I think of
- 12:13
- when I think Ohio and so people when
- 12:15
- they talk about Zanesville that's what I
- 12:17
- think about every town I think that's
- 12:19
- what I think about every town in Ohio
- 12:21
- that there's something more there's
- 12:23
- something better and hopefully by
- 12:26
- dropping Shakespeare and meaning
- 12:28
- Shakespeare and everyone else you know
- 12:32
- Dickens and Hugo and Sherwood Anderson
- 12:36
- and whatnot will remember that you know
- 12:41
- will bear arms and bare our souls and
- 12:45
- and all will remember that will we in it
- 12:49
- we're here on st. Crispin's day and that
- 12:53
- is our culture and our heritage as
- 12:56
- English speakers above of course I love
- 12:59
- Pakistanis I wanted a Pakistani of them
- 13:02
- uber driver to go around all the
- 13:03
- different ISI safe houses that the
- 13:06
- Ilan's built but you know every year we
- 13:14
- should bear arms and bare our souls and
- 13:17
- remember this st. Crispin's day so heart
- 13:21
- by the Hudson Hudson happenstance
- 13:25
- Requiem for Hudson who knows there's a
- 13:30
- there's a story and there's a poem here
- 13:32
- somewhere
- 13:33
- now they say there's a pony in there
- 13:34
- somewhere a big girl at digging away
- 13:37
- that and that's how this story want
- 13:40
- stories been there's a pony and there's
- 13:41
- somewhere but most of its clawing
- 13:43
- through crap and if I had to just
- 13:47
- slightly alter that story about the
- 13:48
- little girl trying to find the pony
- 13:50
- because there's so much shit I'd say
- 13:53
- there's a poem in here somewhere so I
- 13:55
- guess that's my final thought for
- 13:57
- Hastings and Lutz and never I've always
- 14:00
- rolled through here but I've never
- 14:01
- actually spent any time here and I
- 14:03
- thought it would be time to do a video
- 14:05
- letter if I if I ever spent any time
- 14:09
- here so
- 14:11
- thoughts of Dolly when I went through
- 14:14
- Spain thoughts of Picasso when I went
- 14:17
- through Ho manag the cicadas and there's
- 14:22
- a poem in here somewhere
