1. Experimentation.
2.
3. Curiosity peaked as he worked, his fingers busy with the process of crafting the needed items as he peeled the resulting magical effects from them then stockpiled and separated them as had become his habit. So automated had his process become that he no longer even thought about it beyond the journey from idea to product. Idly he glanced back over at the things he’d set out; a chicken’s egg with a developing embryo within, a small figurine of a dinosaur, a magnet, a sharp knife, a bar of steel, some dry ice, and a tall candle with an open flame still burning.
4.
5. Hopefully he wouldn’t have to do this more than once.
6.
7. “My husband, you seem hard at work, though I find it hard to discern exactly what you wish to achieve.” His reverie was broken by the sound of his wife’s voice, a welcome distraction in truth. He glanced back to see her, swollen in full glory of the child which she carried, the young woman he’d chosen to tie his life to looked tired and haggard, her dark skin sallow and the area under her eyes dark. A reminder of the delicate yet immensely taxing process which was ongoing within her.
8.
9. “Oh, hey Nubia.” Alex turned, rising from his work to greet his wife properly, initiating a kiss as he’d begun to fall into the habit of doing. For someone who was from the side of those who celebrated excess and informality, the first mother of his children was certainly one of the most prim and proper people he’d ever come across. She preferred to allow him to lead in their interactions, something it had taken him time and effort to figure out though he supposed it might have simply been out of a desire not to smother him in the early days of what could be considered the magical world equivalent of a political marriage.
10.
11. He’d slowly been beginning to learn her ins and outs. Love beginning to flow from the understanding garnered.
12.
13. She smiled with languid pleasure as their lips parted.
14.
15. “So dear husband? You still have not revealed your purpose.” She spoke, her eyes glancing down at the project you’d begun to set up, glancing over again to some more equipment which you’d had prepared as you worked, something to hold the end result when you were done.
16.
17. “Ah right. Heh…” He hemmed, smiling foolishly as he ran his fingers through bone white hair. “I ah… I never had a pet you see. Uh… yeah I’ve never had any kind of pet. Mom and dad never really were big on them and no one else was really cared. I mean I never got a chance to ahh…”
18.
19. His wife waited patiently for him to finish his ramble, her dark brown fingers reaching up to caress his cheek lightly in encouragement with a smile.
20.
21. “… yeah rambling a bit. I mean I figured I’m going to be a dad… I’m going to be a dad, that’s something that’s still sinking in… and I couldn’t help but think about how I always wanted a pet when I was a kid. And I thought, hey… maybe with all the experience I’ve been getting with working with the Monsters, I could… make one for my kid. A companion that they could grow up with… you know?”
22.
23. His tired wife let out an exasperated sigh then smiled. “My sweet, darling husband you do understand that is what Siblings are for.”
24.
25. “Not in my experience Nubia…” He admitted with a sigh. “Until I started fucking them I was kind of distant from my sisters. In a way, I still am pretty distant from them, seeing as how I basically own them now, whether or not I call it that.”
26.
27. “And wouldn’t that be what you’d be doing with… whatever it was you were creating?” She asked, not unkindly.
28.
29. “Maybe… I guess… but it’ll be different. It’ll feel different I suppose. At least to me.” He admitted with a light sigh. “Yeah I know, it’s just how I feel I suppose.”
30.
31. “Then that is all I need my dear.” She smiled again, dark tresses brushing from her face with an elegant touch. “Tell me about the work. I do enjoy listening to your passions.”
32.
33. Alex couldn’t quite help the light blush which came to his face as the word and her tone made more carnal thoughts come to mind. Intentional, he figured, his wife was after all a consummate wheeler and dealer, and for all her prim and proper demeanor, she was just as lusty as any other member of the Dark side.
34.
35. “Ah… right.” He switched gears mentally, allowing himself to become more immersed in explaining his thought processes as he spoke. “So from the time I first checked in with the Monsters, I got some ideas from the more in-depth training they put me through before I was allowed to even look at a living creature. And then from working on Firefly. So I asked around a bit, told some of the creators what I wanted to do and eventually someone gave me a few pointers and a kit… Baby’s first Monster pet…”
36.
37. He swept his hand back towards the items which laid upon his desk.
38.
39. “They basically said that so long as I don’t try to make it fully sentient or too magically complex without supervision, that they considered me competent enough to craft a designer lifeform for myself. The thing on the desk is basically an incubator and a viability projection checker. Good for simpler projects at predicting adult outcomes within an 85% range. It even has a little display to show off features that whatever is being made will have so that minor alterations can be made.” Alex grinned, sitting back down as he did, inviting his wife to a seat at the edge of the table as he did.
40.
41. “So then I suppose I should ask what then it is that you plan to create?” She asked, leaning onto her elbow as the weight of their child settled comfortably in her belly.
42.
43. “Well… I was most of the way done with my alteration template, so I can show you what the end result’s supposed to look like.” He grinned as he pulled up the template screen, showing off the figure of a feathered beast standing on two legs and clawed. “It’ll be pretty much the size of a full-grown person when it reaches maturity.”
44.
45.

46.
47. His wife nodded along slowly, examining the beast as she did, strange interest gracing her brow as she continued to examine the picture displayed. “ Ah… A beautiful creature. Feathered too. I approve husband, though I’m not certain if you mean it to be a Deinonychus, a type of Velociraptor, or some kind of whimsical inbetween? I’ve seen the variations a plenty, but most d”
48.
49. “Heh… yeah it’s not exactly fully biologically accurate. More of a whimsical inbetween as you put it… I’m actually a little bit surprised you know that much though… most girls I knew couldn’t tell the difference between them to save their lives…” Alex laughed nervously, not having expected to be challenged on it.
50.
51. Nubia grinned with a mischievous look in her own eye. “My husband, I may not keep up with the latest trends in… mundane… technical endeavors, but I am an avid student of history. From current to the vastly prehistoric. It does my heart good to see that we share such an interest. Though I will admit that there are many girls older girls within the monsters who have proven rather attached to the notion of these creature having been scaled rather than properly plumed.”
52.
53. “Haha yeah... I wouldn’t be surprised if some older girls are really adamant about scaly versions though, that got popular with old movies, and before the last couple of years there were… but in the mundane world they kinda worked out techniques and uncovered new remains that showed they were feathered creatures. Less reptilian brutes that were imagined and more like fluffy birds with teeth.” He grinned, a certain boyish excitement rushing through him as he explained... his sisters always brushed him off when he got excited at explaining the ins and outs of dinosaurs to them. A childish passion maybe, but it had always stuck with him. “I was planning on infusing the chicken embryo with the modifications which I’ve been modeling on the toy I have here. The steel bar was to use for a protection enchant that will make its feathers as tough as steel without making them too hard or brittle for cuddling. I’ve been working on a sharpness enchantment with the knife that will delay expression until it reaches full maturity, and fire and ice regulation enchants that I’m going to tie to its internal temperature regulation, and then to its breath. And the magnet I’m experimenting with an enchantment that will let it ‘breathe’ and gather magic by attracting and repelling raw magic through its system… I’m still working on that a bit, but I think it’ll combine pretty well with the Fire and Ice enchants as a regulation system once I’ve got the balances and growth ratios right. I’m probably going to check back with the monsters before it hatches though, get my work fully approved. I… I hope it turns out well, I’ll probably be sweating bullets till I get the final ok...”
54.
55. Alex sighed, then gave a sheepish smile.
56.
57. “It always delights me to see you passionate, my Husband... though you should probably catch your breath.” Nubia rested her hand upon his in reassurance. “So this is to be our child’s playmate? Then I would suggest a few minor changes. After all… Birds are my forte and it shall be important that our colours be represented. Gold and crimson would make for lovely plumage.”
58.
59. Alex laughed, picking her hand up in both of his before pulling them close in for a kiss.
60.
61. “Of course, my beautiful, brilliant, darling wife! After all it is a gift for Our child.” Alex grinned, new life seemingly breathed into his movements. “Our child…”
62.
63. She nodded her head. Pleased with the man whom she’d given her hand… a good match. Better than she’d hoped.
64.
65. “Our child. The first, and likely not the last.”
