  1. If you're not a critic. You do not have to see objective good and bads. You're not held to that standard. Also if I'm just talking to you and you say: "Man that game was great IMO" That's still fine because we've already established a baseline as friends what we connect on as pals. However. Once you start using objective language and then state "oh its all my opinion leave me alone." THAT'S when issues start to crop up. Joseph Anderson was, and Snowman gaming is under flak for this right now because of their video's on "subjectivity is implied." Because it makes no sense if you actually watch their videos. SnowmanGaming," Have you played an NES game lateley? They kind of SUCK!" Then "Oh this is just all my opinion." You have a huge fanbase and you just pissed off a whole bunch of people who are really into NES games and it's their opinion that NES games don't suck. And your video HAS to be 10 minutes for that ad revenue because god forbid you use all the time you need to get your point across so the video sucks and doesn't make that point at all. Then the YTbers get mad at their fan base because they pissed off their fanbase and don't realize it. Joseph Anderson made a TERRIBLE video called: Why horror games don't scare me. And he kept saying things like: These aren't horror games. Like he did in his SOMA critique. Look man, I can go into a comedy and it can not make me laugh, but I can still agree that its a "comedy movie." He got so much flak for this and didn't get the point he made this terrible video pointing the finger at his fan base talking about how objectivity in critique is pointless and his fan base give him EVEN MORE FLAK. He's dropped it since then but let me conclude what I'm trying to say. I'll quote Joe here: "Let's say you just finished a movie with your friend and your friend says "that movie was really good" do you A: Disagree with them and have a discussion. B: Ask them why they liked it and hear them out. or C: Rip your shirt off in a frothing rage and tell them how dare they try to present their opinion as fact." This is a pretty shitty example because he hasn't stated what kind of people are watching the movie, are they just casual normie movie goers that eat anything up, or are they critical thinkers about media. The point is that context is everything. Video essays are pretty ass because they take such little time to explain their point that they've said virtually nothing by the time the video is over (look at downwardthrust as an example) meanwhile you have people like Joseph Anderson, and E:R that take hours and hours to get their point across because THAT'S the amount of time it actually takes to make your case. I p much NEVER click on videos that are around 10 minutes because I know its gonna be some wishy washy bullshit with objectivity and subjectivity mixed in there. If you're presenting your argument about something controversial in front of thousands of people, you can't just go off of your integrity like me and you can discussing something. The audience doesn't know you well enough to just accept: Man this part of the game is really bad, ok next part. No, you have to build your case with objective evidence that will be stated as facts. The person that you're replying to, their channel looks like a bunch of bullshit that I don't care about. However the channel looks really clickbaity and just about someone who rattles off their opinions to their fans and that's fine. Just understand that if you want to participate in discourse every once and a while, you can't just say: Oh this is my opinion, because as someone who has an audience, you're called to a higher standard. You can have BOTH. Like, I know Dunkey well enough at this point to where if he said: This game is good, I take it right there and put it on my steam wishlist or even by it, because me and Dunkey's taste line up well enough. But Dunkey ALSO has to build his case to the people that aren't there and say: THIS IS why the game IS good. You can have an objective opinion (I learned this recently), "the sun is a star in my opinion." Is an objective opinion, it's just redundant so say "In my opinion" because that's a well known fact.

  3. Personally, I really can't dig "subjectivity is implied" and "in my opinion" because to me that's just a cop out so you don't have to build your case. I'm interested to hear WHY someone thinks something is good or bad. I WANT people to build their arguments with facts and evidence so we can properly discuss. Going back to context of peoples. Take my buddy Gdie (pronounced Gee-Day). Gdie LOVES movies and he's an avid movie goer. He watches everything in the theater and loves ALL of it. If me and Gide walk out of a movie and he says "Oh my John that movie was great I LOVED that movie." I'll say "Good to hear Gdie, what did you like about the movie, what was your favorite part?" "Oh yeah that was pretty cool." EVEN if I thought the movie was a steaming pile of shit, its makes me happy that my friend had a good time, and I like hearing why he liked it. I'm NOT going to tell him why I didn't like the movie because that's only going to soil his enjoyment of EVERY movie in existence. This is a person I would not have an objective discussion with because I can't. If you tell the robot "Well I personally thought the movie was great." The robot goes [Thumbs up] and says "that's cool." See this is why I love objectivity, because I LOVE discourse. I LOVE LOVE LOVE discourse because either I'm coming out of it with my mind changed on a topic and I learn something new. Or someone else's mind was changed and they learned something new. It's a win win. However we can't have discourse if someone is just spouting off "IT'S ALL MY OPINION LEAVE ME ALONE." Well great not only have you cut yourself off from the people disagreeing with you but you've also cut yourself off from people who do agree with you. And you're just in your little headspace echo chamber. "Well it's just my opinion." Is the ultimate defense AND the ultimate surrender. It's the ultimate defense because people CANNOT tell you you're wrong, because its just how you felt. But its also the ultimate surrender because then we can't talk about the merits of what the opinion is being formed on whether its a book, game, movie etc. The farthest we can go with this is you explaining why something made you feel a certain way. Which is great for friends among friends! I love listening to my friends feelings on topics (not sarcasm). And if you're not interested in talking about the merits of a piece of media then I'm not going (replace I and I'm with: what people should be doing, I am their representative lol. The people that are crying for objective critique in opinion pieces in this analogy) to ask you to. HOWEVER, if you're a youtuber and you use objective language in your opinion piece like: "star wars the last jedi is a fantastic movie and you're all just insane." Then you're gonna have issues. Going back to the youtuber that you replied to lemme quote them:
  4. "wow I sure am having fun with ____. Its nice to have something that resonates with me personally!"
  5.
  6. *some clown clawing at my window*
  7.
  8. "but....bUt.... THE FLAWS!!! You must ACCEPT my OBJECTIVE critique COWARD"
  9.
  10. This has so much to unpack. This really looks like a salty tweet because someone told them something they like isn't good and they're butthurt about it. CONTEXT IS EVERYTHING. In what context are you saying "wow I sure am having fun with ____. Its nice to have something that resonates with me personally!" Is it just between you and a friend, or was it on one of your youtube videos? If it was between you and a friend was it some random person that just popped in your conversation? If it was on a youtube video, did you use objective language that could have set someone off? Because once you put your poker chips in, you're in the game. Did (im just gonna say she because I think the youtuber is a she) she say something like: Kingdom hearts is a GREAT GAME, it does all these things right like this this and this. Or the entire time did she just talk about her feelings on the game. See once you say the former then Uh-Oh, now people can disagree with you. What if she said: Dark Souls 2 did hitboxes very right. Then someone comes in and shows a bunch of clips of the terrible hitboxes in dark souls 2 and says "yeah you're wrong, the hitboxes aren't good." Then she says, "OMFG ITS JUST MY OPINION LET ME LIKE THINGS LEAVE ME ALONE." See the problem here. I guarantee you this is what's actually happening. I can already see it, I watched a bit of her KH3 video (I will watch the whole thing, as I am a fair man). And this IS what is happening. "Can you name any other series that has this many games where the character development is crucial between ALL games, oh these games don't count [she then whole bunch of games where they do]." See THIS is the problem, they get so built up into what they're trying to say they start stepping on toes because "well I said it therefore its true." Or was that just your opinion that ALL these other game's stories aren't integral to each other? Fuck off. It's such a cop out to do the opinion thing, I can't do anything with it, and I really don't CARE about your opinion because I don't know you. So its' just gg. The title of the video is: Yelling about KH3. What does this even mean? Is it a review? Is it a critique? Is it a rant? Is it a praise? I have no idea. Fuck these wishy washy youtubers man. I want to think and talk about stuff, not be yelled at about why I should or shouldn't like something and then get no reasoning for it. This is why I sing the praises of youtube channels like mauler because people like him put in the work, are not condescending, and take it piece by piece. Don't take your half baked subjective bullshit with bad objective evidence in their and expect me to like it and just take it all as "your opinion" that's so fucking stupid and lazy. If she was just one of my friends after a movie I could ignore it, but she's a youtuber with a large fanbase, spewing off nonesnese. Context is EVERYTHING. The tweet about her review says: Get woke. Ok cool, if I don't agree with your nonsense then I'm not woke. What it seems like to me, is that she made a "review" singing the praises of KH3, got a lot of things wrong while using mixed language (using mixed language is fine btw), and then when people called her out "Hey this is actually wrong." She threw up the safety net "OMFG ITS JUST MY OPINION LEAVE ME ALONE." Instead of looking at it critically and saying "oh shit yeah that's a pretty big issue. It doesn't change my opinion on the game but I understand that that's a problem." Or she says," Yeah this is false and here's why." Or she says "Huh you're right, I think less of the game now." And out of all these ways she could have handled it she chose the ugly route and said," It's just my opinion, leave me alone." Pussy throws her hat into discourse then the moment she's challenged she runs away. This shit pisses me off because I LOVE discourse and it is fantastic (notice the language, using both) for the reasons I stated earlier. Someone is gonna come out of it enlightened. And if you don't wanna have discourse, then don't participate in the first place. You don't get to have your little echo chamber if you're willing to step outside of it every now and again. No stay in there if you want to say "It's just my opinion leave me alone."

  12. "I think the lesson is not everyone *has* to enter a discussion of something’s “objective” merit. They’re allowed to talk about things they like, and the debaters are also allowed to have their style of discussions.
  13. The key is communicating which type of convo you’re having atm" You are 100% mate.
