55. A brilliant scientist left for dead returns to exact revenge on the people who burned him alive.
 56. Scientist Peyton Westlake is working on a project to create synthetic skin. Now the skin he has developed has a flaw--it will not remain stable for more than 99 minutes. His girlfriend, Julie, a lawyer is investigating a developer. She leaves some incriminating documents at Peyton's. One night Peyton was working when the lights in his lab went out, he then discovers that the synthetic skin has remained stable past 99 minutes, he deduces that it's because of light that the skin doesn't remain stable. And it is at that moment that a psychotic criminal, Robert Durant appears demanding the documents that Julie left there. They beat up Peyton, and after finding the documents they blow up Peyton's lab. Peyton was blown away and everybody believes he is dead but in reality, he was found, burned seriously and a new procedure was performed on him that renders him unable to sense pain, he also now has tremendous strength and is now prone to violent outbursts. He is now working on perfecting the synthetic skin and at the same using his technology to make synthetic skin masks of the men who attacked him so that he could strike back at them.
 57. Scientist Peyton Westlake is working on a synthetic skin that will provide a normal life for those suffering with skin disorders from injuries etc. His work is interrupted when his lab is attacked by gangsters andhe is beaten and left for dead in his lab and is blown up, however he is fished from the river and is treated. Westlake's damage has left him horribly mutated and with no nervous system. An angry shadow of his former self he escapes and continues his work while planning revenge on those who did this to him.

An early example of Sami Rami's comic book work – this was one of his first tries at a mainstream hit. The story is pure comic book but it allows for a much darker mood than many other blockbuster types (stand up the Batman films!) and it's better for it. The plot also focused on the damage done to the characters so as to prevent it all being comic book stuff.

Rami's use of the swinging, rushing camera angles helps give it a real comic feel without taking away from the action. He also blends fantasy comedy really well to make it amusing. If you've seen Evil Dead then you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

Neeson is good as Darkman simply because he is quite a dull man and his transformation in an angry crazed avenger is made more startling. McDormand is good but a little vapid in her role. Larry Drake is actually very good as one of the main villains (Durant) especially when he was best known at the time for a mentally handicapped character in LA Law (Benny)! Friels also gives a great OTT performance as the businessman Strack, and if you're interested in such things there are lots of cool cameos. John Landis and Jenny Agutter provide an `American Werewolf' connection – with Agutter caring for a dangerous man undergoing physical changes, Ted Rami is in it and Bruce Campbell shows his face.

Overall it isn't very serious, but Rami manages to deliver comic book comedy fantasy and comedy without losing the dark, violent edge that the messed up character needed. Are you paying attention Joel Schumacher?
 58. Before Sam Raimi made the Spider-man trilogy his first foray into superhero filmmaking was his own original creation, Darkman. It was film at the time of when darker, more mature comic book movies were being made and it serve as a template for his later films.

Peyton Westlake (Liam Neeson) is a research scientist who trying to make synthetic skin and his lawyer girlfriend, Julie (Frances McDormand) is investigating corruption involving a land deal and construction contracts. But Julie's investigation leads to her becoming a target for mob boss Robert G. Durant (Larry Drake) and his crew attacks Peyton, leaving his horribly burned and presumed dead. But Peyton gets saved by a medical team whose treatment makes Peyton unable to feel pain and have super human strength but also makes him mentally fragile. When Peyton escape from hospital he sets out to get his revenge against Durant, using his synthetic skin and rebuild his relationship with Julie.

I have seen the Spider-man series before seeing Darkman and you can certainly see the visual tricks and there similarities between the two. Both employ similar styles, with Raimi using his transitions and flowing camera movements. We get Raimi style montages and the character of Peyton felt very similar to a villain in the Spider-man films, someone who suffers from some of accident and having to go into hiding. Peyton could have been a Spidy villain with his sympathetic back story. Even the score by Danny Elfman has a similar sound to Spider-man.

As well as the links to Spider-man, Darkman does have a pulpy, 1930s feel, similar to other films with the period: this is particularly the case because of the gangsters and the way they are dress. Yet the film is still set in its contemporary setting. Also adding to the 1930s is Raimi's referencing of classic horror films, particularly Frankenstein as Peyton walks in the rain bandaged up and an organ heavy music playing in the background.

Whilst Darkman has a B-Movie quality through with a bit of a dark humour twist, it also employs a storyline similar to Yojimbo and A Fistful of Dollars as Peyton infuriate the gang and it is done effectively as Peyton is able to make masks to cover himself. It was clever as Peyton researches the gang and it is played naturally as Peyton learns about the gang.

In the UK has an 18 rating, which means I was expecting a fully violence exploitation fest. But besides from the scene where we see Peyton getting burned most of the violence is cutaway away or far typical. If it was rated now it would get a 15 rating now.

Darkman is a solid attempt at making an adult superhero film. Its pacing is quick, but some of the special effects have not aged well, the greenscreen effects were particularly bad. It was also surprisingly lacking in action, the big set pieces being in the beginning and the final third which has a fine battle in an abandoned factory which turns to a good old fashioned helicopter chase which people clearly would have died in.

Darkman is an entertaining film that should please Raimi fans. It is certainly worth a look if you like the Spider-man films, want to see a superhero film with a dark edge or a vigilante film with a twist.
 59. What no plot summary of Darkman can provide is how much director Raimi ("The Evil Dead") brings to the party. In addition to giving us a conflicted hero - more disturbed than Batman - Raimi fills every action sequence and even routine plot scenes with fresh images that reflect his Darkman's rage. 60. According to Bruce himself at a UK convention in March 2008, he was never down for the role. He did confirm however that he supplied much of the voice work. The European DVD has a small cut due to it being distributed in the UK, where the BBFC used to have a problem with the depiction of certain Asian weapons in movies. It is hard to say. There is a shot that establishes where the line is and shows that Westlake is already standing very close to it when he gets there, so it is possible that he crossed it on the last throw when he knocked the bottles down and not realized it. If Westlake was paying attention, the fact that he is so certain that he did not cross the line would set the interpretation that the guy at the stand really was trying to cheat him. While both interpretations involve the aspect of his inability to control his temper making Westlake/Darkman more unpredictable, dangerous and susceptible to violence; only the one in which the guy actually cheated Westlake would involve him getting what he deserves when Westlake beats him up. Bottom line, if you want to believe that the scene's only purpose was to put further focus on Westlake's growing instability, then he did cross the line (though either way, the underlying meaning is there). But if you want to believe that the guy was being an unfair jerk, you'll say Westlake was behind the line. a5c7b9f00b
