- Argonne National Laboratory Illinois by Hayatsu and colleagues in 1984, demonstrated rapid coal formation under simulated natural conditions: made simple coals by heating lignin to about 150 degrees Celsius in presence of montmorillonite or illite (clay minerals) which acted as catalysts in periods from 2 weeks to nearly a year; pertinent that they found acidic volcanic clays sped up the process a lot, because such clays are often associated with coal seams.
