  13. -----------------------------------------
  14. STUFF TO KNOW
  15. - Running near spinners and rotators causes them to face certain directions. If you try to run past a spinner or rotator, s/he will always catch you.
  16. - Opening the bag or Pokemon menu freezes spinners for 32 frames, assuming you do not run near them.
  17. - The cursors for the main menu and inventory never never reset unless you save+quit (so no point in swapping items to the top of your inventory).
  18. - You cannot buffer inputs in Gen 3, so it is generally best to menu immediately after an event, rather than in the middle of movement.
  19. - Zigzagoon has a 10% chance of picking up an item after each battle. Any time you're on the Pokemon menu, remove an item from Zig if you see one.
  20. - When Mudkip/Marshtomp/Swampert's HP is at 1/3 or less, its Torrent ability will trigger, which boosts the power of Water-type moves by 50%.
  21. -----------------------------------------
  22.
  23. INTRO
  24. This is intended as a general guide to my route in Sapphire. I don't assume a particular Mudkip but instead provide strats for a range of offensive stats where relevant. In general, I consider "runnable" attack, special attack, and speed to be 20IV~/3IV+, 17IV~/9IV+, and 21IV~/9IV+ respectively.
  25.
  26. MUDKIP MANIPULATION
  27. Mudkip's nature, IVs, and gender are set when you press "YES" to confirm it as your starter. Every frame from soft reset produces a distinct and exact combination of these values, so by aiming for a certain frame or group of frames, you can reliably produce a starter with good stats which you know from the beginning.
  28.
  29. Once you have decided on a Mudkip or cluster to aim for, you can use the following formula to determine when to confirm Mudkip with respect to soft reset:
  30.
  31. T = (F + 500) / 60
  32.
  33. where F is the frame or "index" number of the Mudkip on the list and T is the corresponding amount of time from soft reset (in seconds). Rather than waiting in front of the bag, you can pass time waiting on the file menu, so no time is lost for later Mudkips. "NEW GAME" to Mudkip selection is approximately 2m43s, so merely subtract 163s from T to determine how long after soft reset (A+B+START+SEL) to press "NEW GAME". If you are still practicing the intro, you may want to start a bit earlier to give yourself more leeway when timing Mudkip.
  34.
  35. Some good kips:
  36.
  37. 9829 Lonely 6/29/31/25/24/24
  38.
  39. 10602 Lonely 30/29/18/18/14/24
  40. 10603 Lonely 24/18/14/30/30/20
  41.

  43. 11077 Lax 19/20/6/12/21/24
  44. 11078 Lonely 24/12/21/22/1/20
  45. 11079 Lonely 20/22/1/30/13/23
  46. 11080 Docile 23/30/13/26/6/23
  47. 11081 Hasty 23/26/6/25/18/17
  48. 11084 Mild 9/24/8/14/18/24
  49.

  54. 12784 Hasty 19/30/30/25/10/12
  55.
  56. Before starting:
  57. - Have a save file with the text speed as FAST, battle scene as OFF and battle style as SET
  58. - Determine a Mudkip or cluster to aim for. Using the formula above, determine the timing.
  59. - Note: After resetting and starting your timer, always advance immediately to the file select screen, as the title screen causes the RNG to advance unpredictably so that you could miss your desired Mudkip.
  60.
  61. NEW GAME
  62. - Choose the boy
  63. - Give yourself any 1-character name
  64.
  65. LITTLEROOT TOWN
  66. - Withdraw the Potion from the PC, then set the clock to the default time
  67. - After the TV cutscene, walk right to May's house. Walk upstairs, then talk to May, then walk out
  68. - Walk up to Route 101
  69.
  70. ROUTE 101
  71. - Choose Mudkip after looking in the bag. Select "YES" at the time you calculated for
  72. - Check Mudkip's nature and stats. Reset if you missed your kip.
  73. - Poochyena: Tackle spam
  74.
  75. LITTLEROOT TOWN
  76. - Give Mudkip a 1-character name
  77. - Head north to Route 103
  78.
  79. ROUTE 103
  80. - Rival 1: Tackle spam (use Potion if a non-crit Pound will kill)
  81. - If you have less than 15 HP after the fight, use your Potion now
  82. - Walk back to Littleroot Town
  83.
  84. LITTLEROOT TOWN
  85. - After exiting the lab, walk to the left so that you're two tiles to the right of your mom, then talk to her from the right
  86. - If you used your Potion during the rival fight, walk inside and talk to your mom to heal
  87. - Run up to Oldale Town
  88.
  89. ROUTE 101/OLDALE TOWN
  90. - Catch a Zigzagoon or Poochyena if you see one (Tackle once)
  91. - Run left to Route 102
  92.
  93. ROUTE 102
  94. - Talk to the first trainer you see
  95. - Youngster Calvin: Tackle spam, healing as necessary
  96. - Run through the grass to dodge the remaining trainers
  97. - If you can survive a Tackle from Zigzagoon/Poochyena (generally same damage as its level), catch it if you see one (Tackle once)
  98.
  99. PETALBURG CITY
  100. - Run to the mart
  101. - Shopping: Buy 1 Potion, 3 Repels, 1 X Speed and 3 X Attacks
  102. - Run to the gym, and mash through/watch the long cutscene
  103. - When the cutscene ends, run west to Route 104
  104.
  105. ROUTE 104
  106. - Run through the first patch of grass
  107. - If you see a Zigzagoon or a Taillow/Wingull, catch it (Tackle once)
  108. - Get the 2 Oran Berries
  109. - Run to one tile below the path, and stop one tile before the grass. Use a Repel, use a Potion or Oran Berry, and equip an Oran Berry
  110. - Run through the grass, and behind the trainer, to enter Petalburg Woods
  111.
  112. PETALBURG WOODS
  113. - Run left, and stop running at the tile to the bottom-right of the Bug Catcher, then walk past him. This is 100% spinner manipulation, so you don't need to open the bag
  114. - Aqua Grunt: Tackle spam, healing as necessary
  115. - Run left again, then pass the first Bug Catcher the same way as the first one
  116.
  117. ROUTE 104
  118. - Get the 2 Oran Berries on the left
  119. - Run to the tile below the water. Wait for the rotator to look away, then walk past her and up the bridge
  120. - Run straight to the Rustboro Gym
  121.
  122. RUSTBORO GYM
  123. - Heal to 22+ HP upon entering and equip Oran if Poochyena triggered it. Make sure you save an Oran to equip for Roxanne.
  124. - Talk to both minions
  125. - Youngster 1: Mud-Slap x6, (learn Water Gun), Water Gun x2, healing as necessary
  126. - Youngster 2: Water Gun
  127. - Heal to full and equip an Oran Berry
  128. - Roxanne: Water Gun spam
  129. > The first Geodude is a range with <19 spatk at L12 (this corresponds to my spatk threshold)
  130. > Roxanne will use a Potion (up to 2) whenever her Pokemon is at <40% HP
  131. > Nosepass does ~12-15 damage with Rock Tomb and Rock Throw
  132. > If Nosepass has lowered your Speed and is faster on the turn that you can kill it, sacrifice a slave to undo the Speed drop
  133.
  134. RUSTBORO CITY
  135. - Run left to activate the cutscene, then up and right to Route 116
  136.
  137. ROUTE 116
  138. - NOTE: You need 360 extra experience between now and Rival 2 (not including Clark or the Grunt). Keep track as you go.
  139. - Take the bottom path, picking up the Repel. If you encounter a Taillow or Zigzagoon, catch it (Tackle once). If you are in Torrent, WG other encounters for experience.
  140. - Stop one tile before the grass, and use a Repel. Also remove the Oran Berry if it didn't activate against Roxanne
  141. - You can manipulate the Bug Catcher with running, but waiting for him is safe and loses minimal time
  142. - You do need to manipulate Janice (the Schoolgirl spinner) after the Bug Catcher. Run to the tile immediately to the left of her, then walk up and right past her. If she catches you, spam Tackle
  143. - Talk to the Hiker (Water Gun x3)
  144. - Run into the cave

  149.
  150. ROUTE 116
  151. - Use a Repel after the first one wears off
  152. - Manipulate Janice again (run to tile to the right, then walk up and left past her)
  153. - Manipulate or wait for the Bug Catcher
  154. - Talk to the Devon guy to activate the cutscene
  155.
  156. RUSTBORO CITY
  157. - After leaving the building, run to Mr. Briney's house south of Petalburg Woods
  158.
  159. ROUTE 104
  160. - After exiting the forest, run through the grass behind the trainer
  161. - If you haven't caught a Zigzagoon, grind here until you catch one (Mud-Slap to weaken)
  162. - If you see a flier, YOLO ball it unless:
  163. > It's a Wingull and you're not in Torrent (Water Gun)
  164. > Taillow has lowered your Attack with Growl (Tackle)
  165. - Talk to Mr. Briney to sail to Dewford, then run to the cave
  166.
  167. GRANITE CAVE
  168. - Map: http://i.imgur.com/Jii4k6Y.png
  169. - Pick up the Escape Rope item ball on the ground floor
  170. - Kill everything you see (Water Gun) except Sableye and Abra until you have your 360 experience (this is Marshtomp + 27 exp.)
  171. - When you evolve, teach Mud Shot over Growl
  172. - If you see an Abra, throw your best ball to catch it (can be an Ultra Ball if Zig picked one up)
  173. - If you run out of Great Balls and don't have Abra, check Zigzagoon for an Ultra Ball if you have one
  174. - Repel after catching Abra and getting 360 experience
  175. - After the cutscene, Escape Rope if you have Abra and 360 experience. If not, grind on the ground floor until you have both
  176. - After exiting, run to Mr. Briney's house and sail to Slateport
  177.
  178. ROUTE 109
  179. - Pick up three items:
  180. > Revive (run left upon entering; it's hidden in the corner)
  181. > Ether (run right, then up 2 tiles from the Revive; it's hidden in the corner)
  182. > Soft Sand (talk to the girl on the right, next to the Ether)
  183. - Run up to Slateport, dodging the trainers
  184.
  185. SLATEPORT CITY

  187. - Run up to the museum, and walk upstairs

  196. - Dodge the Pokefan by running all the way to the left
  197. - Repel + equip Soft Sand one step before the grass
  198. - You can either dodge Timmy (the Youngster spinner) with running manipulation or fight him on purpose for valuable experience (and so you don't hit him on the second pass, when the experience is much less valuable). If you fight him, Mud Shot x3
  199. - Pick up the hidden Full Heal (2U and 4R of Timmy)
  200. - Heal to 13+ HP for Rival 2
  201. - Rival 2: (Heal as necessary), X Attack x2, X Speed, Mud-Slap+Mud Shot, Mud Shot+Mud Shot, Water Gun
  202. > Grovyle usually does 30-36 with Absorb and about 9 with Quick Attack. It does 34-40 with Absorb to the Lax Mudkip (and to the Hasty Mudkip if you're Lv. 18)
  203. > Grovyle will use Quick Attack if it is guaranteed to kill, so you must Super Potion if this is the case
  204. > If you miss the first Mud Shot on Grovyle, you can sometimes manipulate Quick Attack by healing to an HP at which Absorb hits Marshtomp into QA range. This gives you another chance to hit the first Mud Shot at the expense of a Super Potion
  205.
  206. ROUTE 110 (after Rival 2)
  207. - Manipulate Edwin (the Pokemaniac spinner) by running one tile below him and two tiles to his right, then walking past him. If he catches you, use Tackle and heal if necessary (Absorb does about 20)
  208. - Carefully walk past the rotator

  220. - Walk to the Battle Girl on the right (Mud Shot+Mud Shot; can sometimes finish with Tackle/WG)
  221. - Hit the switch to the right of the Battle Girl
  222. - Talk to the guitarist above the Battle Girl (Mud Shot x3)
  223. - Hit the switch in the top-left corner
  224. - Heal to 41+ HP
  225. - Wattson: Mud Shot x3, healing HP necessary (don't heal confusion)
  226. - Bike west to Verdanturf Town
  227.
  228. ROUTE 117/VERDANTURF TOWN
  229. - Biking path (starting from gym): 2D, left until you clear the trees, 1D, left until you reach the fences, 1U into the flowers, then bike around the breeder to Verdanturf
  230. - Enter Rusturf Tunnel
  231.
  232. RUSTURF TUNNEL

  242.
  243. ROUTE 111-113
  244. - Follow this path to Meteor Falls: http://i.imgur.com/KNKPiUf.png
  245. - After clearing the boulders, you'll see some trees on the right and an NPC on the left. You must be at full Mach Bike speed when passing them (otherwise the spinner above them might catch you)
  246. - Before the grass patch, bonk into the trees, use a Repel and teach Strength to Marshtomp over Tackle
  247. - You must pass Trent, the Hiker spinner before Fiery Path, three times. It's fastest to YOLO the first pass, then wait for him to turn for the second pass. If he hits you, the experience is valuable (Water Gun x4)
  248. - The Cooltrainer after Fiery Path can be manipulated by biking 8 tiles below him, then biking up and past him. You must be at full Mach Bike speed for this to work
  249. - Talk to the trainer before Route 113
  250. - Cooltrainer Brooke: X Attack, Strength x2, Water Gun
  251. > If Wingull confuses you, use your Full Heal

  254. - Repel before the Route 113 grass
  255.
  256. FALLARBOR TOWN

  261. > Don't buy the Escape Rope if you have the one from Granite Cave
  262. > If you have the Hardy Mudkip and have hit 0-1 spinners, buy 2 X Defends if you can afford it
  263. > If you have extra money, buy extra X Attacks first, X Speeds second and X Specials third
  264. - Upon exiting, bike west to Route 114
  265.
  266. ROUTE 114/METEOR FALLS
  267. - If you need a flier, don't leave the route until you catch Swablu (WG once to weaken)
  268. - Bike down the bridge, then immediately turn right (behind the house), and go down to get 4 Persim Berries
  269. - Bike left and follow the path to Meteor Falls
  270. > Super Repel + heal to full one tile before the second trainer (Hiker Lucas) so that he can't spin left and catch you

  282. - Aqua Grunt: Strength x2
  283. - Matt: Mud Shot, Strength, Mud Shot
  284. - Switch your slot 2 slave to the front, and heal Marshtomp to full if you took damage from missed Mud Shots/ranges
  285. - Archie: Guard Spec. on slave, (slave dies, switch to Marshtomp), X Attack+Strength+X Speed+Mud Shot, Strength+X Attack+Strength, Mud Shot
  286. > Use a second X Speed on Golbat if you have the Hardy Mudkip and have hit 0-1 spinners
  287. > Heal as necessary; Mightyena does about 18, and Golbat does about 25
  288. - Bike down the mountain, then take the south exit
  289.

  303.
  304. HERB SHOP
  305. - Buy ~7 Energy Roots and ~4 Heal Powders (depends on Fallarbor shop and spinners)
  306. - Exit the shop, then switch Marshtomp to slot 1 and Teleport to Mauville. Also heal with very low HP
  307.
  308. MAUVILLE CITY/ROUTE 110
  309. - Bike south to Slateport
  310. - Movement instructions:
  311. > After entering Route 110, align yourself one tile to the left of the berries, then bike down until you bonk

  333. - Linoone: Mud Shot+some combination of 3 moves that kills (depends on first range and PP)
  334. - Take the left door (attack room)

  354.
  355. WEATHER INSTITUTE
  356. - You take 5 damage if you Strength a Carvanha. There are three Carvanhas here. Use Strength as necessary to get below <50% HP, as this will cause Shelly's Mightyena to use Swagger less often
