Everything that went wrong for Jeff Gordon in 2005. I found a website that had race reports for that season and I was astounded just how much bad luck he had that year. It's reminiscent of a recent Ryan Blaney season.
Fontana: Was headed for a 5th place finish when he dropped a cylinder with just 13 to go, then the engine expired entirely.
Las Vegas: Got caught up in a multi-car wreck on lap 66. Drove his way up from 29th to 4th, but a dropped lug nut on a lap 174 pit stop dropped him to 12th. Recovered to finish 4th.
Atlanta: Got wrecked out in a multi-car pileup on the opening lap.
Bristol: Ran in the top 5 early on but had to make an unscheduled pit stop for a tire going down at lap 122, falling 2 laps down. Was able to make up his laps and drove all the way up to 3rd (albeit aided by a large amount of crashes) before having another flat tire with just 10 laps to go.
Martinsville: Drove up from 16th to 10th in the opening laps before making an unscheduled pit stop at lap 47 for a loose wheel, sending him two laps down. He lost another lap as they changed the threads on the right front wheel hub. ...in what might have been his best ever win.
