Still, complete the action and find a new enjoyable reward for having continued to keep your word to yourself by taking your walk. After a number of times of rewarding your behavior that you repeated, you can step back and notice one important accomplishment: each time you walked and then rewarded yourself, you completed your goal. You succeeded. You are a success.

With your walking action now a habit you know you'll keep, move on to the next step and start the process again of finding an action you know will follow, you will enjoy, and you will reward each time you complete it. For example, if your walks were 20 minutes three times a week, you can build on them by walking for longer periods, more frequently, or both: 20 minutes five times a week or 30 minutes three times a week.

  5. If you're not keeping your word, find out why. Is it because you're performing an unpleasant task and your reward is not enough. Then: 1 change the task from unpleasant to pleasant if you can, and 2 beef up the reward if you can't change the task into something pleasant. Is the task pleasant and your reward is enough. Then check your motivation. Either your motivation is enough you truly want to reach your goal. OR you don't want the goal enough to stick with it and no reward level will be enough to keep you pursuing your goal.

  7. Whatever you do, don't continue breaking your word, because that's lying to yourself. Either beef up the reward to keep you going OR recognize the goal is not motivating enough to keep you going at this time. If you recognize you don't have the motivation at this time, that is not failure. Just go ahead and find a new goal which you know you'll keep following, you know you find enjoyable, and you can attach a reward each time you complete it.
