  1. D/s Needs and Wants Checklist (or some approximation thereof)

  3. This is not is not an attempt to replace any standard BDSM checklist but, instead, a compliment to it; they are best used in conjunction with each other.

  5. The task of creating a D/s Checklist (as compared to a BDSM checklist) is by no means an easy one. In BDSM, being largely sexual, things can be broken down into a turn off or a turn on, a yes or no preference - a binary system with translates well into a checklist. In D/s we are dealing more with the relationship side of things. This does not translate well into a simple yes or no, need or want format; things are much more complex than that.

  7. Time, for example, is not simply a yes or no question. Some people require a lot of time with their partner in a relationship, some require less. And then there are varying definitions as to what constitutes “a lot” and “less.” With that in mind, I have formatted this into more of an essay questionnaire with some guidelines to help you figure out what you may and may not need or want in a D/s relationship.

  9. Many people have differing definitions of needs and wants. For our purposes here we will use the following definitions:
  10. NEED: Something without which you will fail at the task at hand.
  11. Example: In order to drive a nail I NEED a hammer of some sort. It can be a simple rock or a chrome-plated tempered steel masterpiece. Either way, without a hammer I will fail as a nail driver.

  13. WANT: Something without which the task at hand will be more difficult but can still be accomplished.
  14. Example: I WANT an automatic nail gun. This will make the job of driving nails much easier and more efficient but I will not fail without it.

  16. Another example more directly related to D/s is sex. There are 2 common views of on sex in D/s. There is the "old school" view that sex and D/s are separate, and the "new school" view that sex and D/s are integral. Personally, I qualify sex as a need. Without it I will lose interest in the relationship and I will fail as a Dom.
