  5. Ambition: The downfall of Macbeth.
  6.
  7. In the play, Hamlet by William Shakespeare, there are many characters who face ambition leading to awful choices, sometimes murdering someone to gain more liking, or power to themself. In Hamlet Claudius’s strong ambitions to become king lead him to poisoning and killing Hamlet’s father and Hamlet falling into a state of sadness. Due to his deep sadness, Hamlet’s relationships with Ophelia and Gertrude deteriorate. In response to Gertrude marrying Claudius just shortly after his father’s death. Similarly, in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth both have an ambition to become king and queen so they let their ambition take over and make awful choices leading to the most important people in their lives to turn on them to eventually kill them both. In william shakespeare’s macbeth, Macbeth’s downfall is brought about by the idea that ambition is an awful thing if it fuels bad ideas, as shown by the murders of Duncan, Banquo, and Macduff's family.

  9. Macbeth’s ambition to become king and kill duncan was one of the factors leading to his downfall. Macbeth is forced, by lady macbeth’s awful ambitious choices to kill Duncan so that they can become the rulers of scotland. One quote showing this is, “O horror, horror, horror! Tongue nor heart Cannot conceive nor name thee. Your royal father's dead.” Macduff finds Duncan dead. After Macduff realized that Duncan is dead he tells Donalbain and Malcolm what happened. Because of Duncans murder, people start to get suspicious of macbeth’s actions and turn against him because of this one action. The first person to become suspicious of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s actions is their good friend banquo. “Thou play'dst most foully for't." by saying this Banquo is basically hoping that macbeth didn’t kill Duncan just to become king. Banquo is commenting on macbeth's actions to become king, Basically becoming suspicious, Leading macbeth to make shotty ambitious choices and send murderers to kill Banquo so he won't enlighten the others on Macbeth’s devious actions.

  11. Banquo’s death is also one of the most leading factors to the downfall of macbeth. “O, treachery! Fly, good Fleance, fly, fly, fly! Thou mayst revenge. O slave! This is banquo screaming (as he is being stabbed to death), fly and run away to his son after the murderers try to kill him. Banquo is killed because Macbeth's ambitious dreams to become the king were almost foiled due to Banquo. Macbeth didnt want banquo getting in the way so he had him murdered. During the dinner banquet they have Banquo’s ghost show up. “Which of you have done this?” Macbeth is seeing Banquo's ghost and he is feeling guilt from his ambitious choices. Asking “Which of you have done this?” Because he is realizing the trouble he has caused. Lady macbeth says this to make him realize what he is doing: “This is the very painting of your fear: This is the air-drawn dagger which, you said, Led you to Duncan.”

  13. Also, the murders of Macduff’s wife and son leads to macbeth’s downfall exponentially.
  14. “Son: Thou liest, thou shag-hair'd villain!
  15. First murderer: What, you egg! [Stabbing him]”
  16. The murderers macbeth sent to kill Macduff's family is calling Macduff’s son an “egg” while killing him and Macduff’s wife runs off while being chased and is killed. Macduff and his family were getting in the way of Macbeth's ambitions so Macbeth had Macduff’s family murdered. After Macduff finds out about the terrible news he is enraged.
  17. “[Re-enter MACDUFF, with MACBETH's head]” Due to Macbeth’s ambitious actions to become king, he gets people to kill Macduff’s family, Macduff has had enough. Maduff goes over to macbeth's castle with the thousands of army men that he gathered from england, Malcolm, Donalbain, and everyone else who turned on macbeth and finally, and finally kills, Macbeth.
