  1. A View of Updike’s "Beauty from the Spine" - for Josh
  2.
  3.
  4. There is something here; the waiting
  5. On the mouth, the tongue and the tooth
  6. Of passive connection – holding back
  7. And wishing for the fantasy, crying
  8. For a day, any day, all of the days.
  9. Across the room, the Caribbean beach in the picture frame
  10. Turns from a picture into memory,
  11. Hanging above his Roman head
  12. Laureled gold and green and gray
  13. As the clay his skin was formed from.
  14. We have worshipped statues
  15. In the dead of night, in the moon’s eye,
  16. In the promise of no light.
  17. You were the boy at recess
  18. Who was not afraid to show skin
  19. Or invite hips and fingers,
  20. That sterling-silver priceless skin
  21. And all the extra bits, the extremities
  22. Coming together at the core of you
  23. At your waist-twisting center.
  24. Draped over a chaise nine miles wide
  25. A still-frame, the image
  26. You are the thing nobody can quite
  27. Put their fingers on
  28. In the long open halls of a gallery—
  29. What is there to learn from the Three Studies
  30. But a testament to the beauty in a body
  31. In a soul?
