Having unintentionally led the woman that he is in love with to believe that he is disinterested, the main character is frantic - chasing after this woman to tell her his true feelings before it is too late. She too has feelings for the main character, having not yet admitted to them. She has been hurt by his cold and distant behavior toward her and fears that the feelings she secretly has for him are without reciprocation.

| Setting |
It is late into the night and the guests, including our main character and his love interest; are at a lavish gala being held at a ritzy venue. The main character is idly chatting amongst friends when he sees that the woman in our story, stands alone by the edge of the ballroom floor. Their eyes meet briefly and the man raises his champagne glass in greeting to her – only for her to frown and swiftly leave the ballroom, walking outside into the gardens.

Main:
(Distant chattering and laughing from a crowd indoors is heard against fading music as the patio doors close behind the main character.)

[Calling to the listener, walking swiftly into the gardens]
Hey! Hey, wait up! Wait a minute! [Grumbles and fumbles through the pathway into the hedges]
Where the hell are you going in such a rush? [Panting, Reaches for the listener’s arm]
Hey, just stop a moment, alright? Just… [Notices the listener has tears streaming down her face, she pulls away from the MC]
Hey… are you alright?
(Listener Response: “NO. I’m not alright! Leave me alone.”)

No, I’m not going anywhere until you tell me why you’re crying.
{Listener: “You know good and well why I’m crying. You’ve been ignoring me for weeks. You won’t talk to me, you won’t return my calls, and you expect me to be okay with it.”)
[Sighs] About that… listen… [Takes a deep breath, swallowing hard.] I wasn’t ignoring you. I could never ignore you. Believe me, I wanted to talk to you. I wanted to call you. I just… I wasn’t sure… [Listener pulls away again, MC takes her arm to stop her once more.]

Wait wait wait. Don’t walk away from me. Please, just listen to what I have to say. [Gathering courage, inhales and exhales slowly]

I’m not ignoring you. I can’t. I think about you all the time.
 (Listener: “No you don’t.”) Yes, I do. I always do. You’re the very first thing on my mind when I wake in the morning. The last thing before I sleep. I see you in my dreams.

(Listener rolls eyes, crossing her arms and looks away from the MC.)
[Sighs desperately] I wouldn’t lie to you. I would NEVER lie to you. [Frustrated with the coldness of the listener] LISTEN TO ME. YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT IS HURTING RIGHT NOW, OKAY? [Tears welling in eyes, voice soft but quivering] Do you have any idea how hard it is to pretend that I don’t care about you? Or how hard it is not to smile when someone mentions your name? How hard it is for me to focus on anything else when all I think about is you? [Cracking voice, full of aggravation and desperation] Do you know how HARD it is for me to see you crying right now?

[Moving close, taking listener’s hand.] Don’t you think… not for one moment… that it has EVER been easy for me to pretend that I don’t care about you!

(Listener is now sobbing, showing some signs of embarrassment.)

No, no. Come here… Don’t cry. You didn’t know. You couldn’t have known. [Sighs, pulling listener against him] I should have just told you how I felt a long time ago. It’s my fault. I was… afraid. I knew that I was falling…

[Inhales, gathering strength to calm the sobbing listener.]

Honestly, this is… the first time that I’ve felt this strongly for someone. You have a grip on me. [Chuckles softly] The very first time I set my eyes on you… I knew it. I knew that I was in trouble. [Holding the listener tightly in his arms, breathing against the top of her head.] I knew I was in trouble… You had me then and you have me now.

(Listener: “Really?)
[Small smile and a soft laugh] Yeah. I was just scared. I… AM scared. [Reluctant sigh] I’ve been abandoned before. I don’t want that again. If I lost you… It would break me. And I just… Can’t go through that pain ag- [Kissed suddenly, but softly by the listener.]

[Sighs softly against the listener’s lips, fighting back tears.] God, I’ve wanted to kiss you for so long…

[Listener kisses MC again; deeply and harder, leaving him breathless momentarily.] …Please tell me that I’m not dreaming this time.

(Listener: “You aren’t dreaming this time.”)

[Swooning, with a smile and a small chuckle, clearly flustered.] Well, it sure didn’t feel like a dream. That felt pretty real to me. (Listener: “Me too.”)

[Kisses the listener, murmuring against her lips]
Hey… We should blow this joint. This party is shit. How about… You, me, ice cream? Good?

(Listener: “Just you and me?)
[Chuckles] Yep. Just us and a couple scoops of the good stuff… Maybe… some more kissing, if you’re up for it…
