- Pokemon Ruby Any% FAQ
- Q: What do you play this game on?
- A: I play on both a Gameboy Player for the Gamecube, as well as an original Nintendo DS.
- Q: What are you trying to do?
- A: Beat Pokemon Sapphire as fast as possible.
- Q: Are there any glitches used in this category?
- A: There are no glitches used in the run.
- Q: Why do you keep resetting?
- A: Probably because I didn't hit the proper frame to get the Mudkip I needed to complete the run. I am aiming for a frame that produces a male Mudkip with a Naughty nature and IVs of 24/27/10/31/31/30.
- Q: Does the starter manipulation work in the same way as FireRed?
- A: Yes and No. We still have to hit a certain time frame to get a good Mudkip, but we don't find our starter Pokemon from our trainer ID. The engine for Sapphire is a bit different than FireFiree can actually get the same exact Mudkips each and every time. For a list of every Mudkip check here! https://www.dropbox.com/s/b6dib2g4x1rjwza/sapphire_mudkips.txt The one I run is on #148.
- Q: Wait, aren't these the same Mudkips you get from Sapphire
- A: Yes they are! Every single Mudkip we can get in Sapphire, we can get in Ruby!
- Q: Are there any major differences between the Ruby and Sapphire route?
- A: Yes! The very first hour of the game is pretty much exactly the same as Sapphire other than having to fight Maxie and Team Magma. After we've fought and defeated Norman however, that's when the route starts changing course.
- 1. Instead of going to right after Norman, we go left and grab Ice Beam from the Abandoned Ship.
- 2. We don't finish the game with the legendary Pokemon, we use Swampert instead for every single fight.
- 3. We teach Maril or Tentacool Dive and Waterfall instead of Swampert.
- 4. We catch a Zigzagoon or Poocheyena for a Rock Smash slave.
- 5. The Team Magma base layout is fairly different from Team Aqua's base.
- Instead of going to the right and heading straight to the Weather Institute, we head to Dewford's Granite Cave for a Rare Candy. Afterwards, we head over to the abandoned ship for Ice Beam to make certain fights easier for Swampert. Then we come up from Slateport and the route starts looking normal again until we get to
- Q: Why Ruby instead of Sapphire?
- A: I really enjoy the fact that this route is more challenging than Sapphire. Having to grab Ice Beam also adds in extra movement that I find really fun.
- Q: Is Ruby faster than Sapphire?
- A: Nope. Kyogre makes things
- Q: How do you know the stats you will get on your Mudkip without checking?
- A: Since the Mudkip is the same every time, the best way I can tell is when it's a male with 21 HP and the Poocheyena is a Female. This is usually an indicator that it's either the Mudkip I'm looking for, or a Hasty nature that is 1 frame off.
- Q: Why don't you run Treecko or Torchic?
- A: Treecko and Torchic just don't have the stats needed to clear the run as fast as possible. Mudkip has the right amount of bulk, stats, and amazing typing to to clear this game in as short a time as possible.
- Q: Does gender affect anything like in Gen 2?
- A: If it's a girl Mudkip, it's not the Mudkip we are looking for. Other than that, picking the male trainer gives you a slightly different rival fights than the one you get when picking the female trainer.
- Q: What other Pokemon do you use during this run?
- A: We generally use Mudkip and his evolutionary line. We catch a flier that's usually either Swablu, Taillow, or Wingull. Grab Castform in the weather center. Then we finish off the final gym and the Elite 4 with Kyogre.
- Q: You're at red health, why don't you heal?
- A: Mudkip has an ability called torrent. Torrent boost your water moves power by 1.5× if I have less than or equal to ⅓ of its maximum HP remaining. This ability can save quite a bit of time in many different sections of the game, so you'll often see me go into fights with very low health.
- Q: What are the beeps I hear right before you grab your Mudkip split?
- A: I use a program called Eon timer. I plug the time frame I want into the program. Then, once that exact time frame is about to come up, it will produce an audio queue in order to help me hit the time frame I am looking for to get the proper Mudkip.
- Q: What game will you be doing after Ruby?
- A: I'm leaning towards a HeartGold/SoulSilver and Super Mario Sunshine
