Invasion, Part 3 - The Forest Burns

  1. LAST TIME ON ZURPG - Sunset in the Dream
  2. Backed with the help of Mima and a gang of Moblins, the adventurers; Darte Fellshard, Melizea Fiametta, Sephiroth and Strife, charged head-first into Thoughter's Fortress to put an end to the Salvadman Army once and for all and to storm into the Windfish Temple Depths through there. Following the waste and devastation being laid to the fortress; the adventurers breached into the Temple Depths to confront and defeat Gradius and Thoughter.

With Gradius and Thoughter finally slain and Marin and Mima being freed, the adventurers got the word that the Nightmares are all being caused by The Nightmare in Koholint and marched onwards to save the residents of Koholint and bring it down once and for all. After Sephiroth got lost in the nightmare and a series of epic battles against Nightmare Strife and then the Nightmare itself, the Nightmare eventually shattered, though not without losing Strife for good. The Nightmare finally dead, the remaining party members went on to meet the newly-freed Windfish and escaped Koholint before it turned to nothingess.

  6. In the final moments, the Windfish whisked them away to where they'd be needed next - On top of Fran's corpse, in Fran's house, in Kokiri Forest. Why they're needed here will surely be revealed soon enough...

  9. * Melizea looks around.
  10. <DM> *Darte and Melizea, the two you of you land in a heap, your landing softened by the now soft and gooey corpse of Fran. Before you can get your bearings, one more person lands on your respective heads.
  11. <DM> *Sephiroth seems to have escaped from the Nightmares as well. Welcome back!
  12. * Melizea is suddenly feeling some bit of gravity upon her.
  13. * Darte squawks, pounding a fist into Fran with a squelch. "Always! ALWAYS landing on my head!"
  14. <DM> [Fran's Soul]: At least someone didn't land you and kill you.
  15. <DM> *Darte, looking where your fist is, courtesies of your Spirit Vision, you can see Fran's ethereal soul.
  16. <DM> *It's talking back at you, and it's got an angry emote.
  17. <DM> [Fran's Soul]: That's my body you're punching, bud. Better get off, before I kick you off myself!
  18. <Melizea> "Huh. It would seem there is some weight upon me."
  19. <DM> *Sephiroth, you're finding the bodies of Melizea and Darte to be surprising comfy to sit on.
  20. <DM> *surprisingly
  21. * Darte flicks at the soul. "Hmm. Not my say, it looks like. Besides, better you than us."
  22. * Melizea attempts to step off the body.
  23. <DM> *Fran's soul squints. Not an emote, but his whole soul squints at you.
  24. <DM> *Melizea, you roll out from between Sephiroth and Darte. Looking around, you're in a decent sized Kokiri home... except Kokiri are small, so actually...
  25. <Melizea> "Does there seem to be an issue?"
  26. <DM> *You roll into a wall already. Guess it's a bit cramped in here.
  27. * Sephiroth gets off the bodies of Melizea and Darte and dusts himself off.
  28. * Melizea is somehow glad she's wearing a hylian mask instead of the gerudo mask or something.
  29. * Sephiroth bonks his head into the ceiling as he stands up.
  30. * Darte pushes himself upright, grumbling quietly as his foot continues to prod at Corpsefran.
  31. <DM> *Bonk indeed! It's just a bump though, no damage taken. Not that you would, given Nayru's Love's protective barrier.
  32. * Darte does the same, grunting. "Alright, Fran, was it you who was dreaming all that up?"
  33. <DM> *Suddenly, Fran's corpse explodes. Darte, roll Power to defend!
  34. <Melizea> (rip)

  39. <DM> *Right as you try to stand up, Fran's corpse explodes, knocking you into the ceiling and causing the whole house to shake slightly. Thanks to your armor, you suffer minor injuries.
  40. * Melizea watches as the whole interaction occurs and slightly chuckles.
  41. <DM> *Where Fran's corpse was, Fran reappears, fully alive and ready to die once more- I mean ready to explain himself.
  42. <Darte> 20h16m | Disgruntled.
  43. <DM> [Fran]: Wait, why am I the one explaining myself, YOU should the ones explaining!
  44. <Melizea> (how tall is fran)
  45. <DM> [Fran]: I didn't dream of anything but smoke! ... wait, why do I smell smoke?
  46. <DM> *Fran is roughly... how tall are you?
  47. <Melizea> 15h, 11m | Hylian Mask Equipped | White Sword and Regeneration Shield Equipped | Force Meter: 0 pts
  48. * Darte never wrote that down, apparently.
  49. * Darte is gangly-long, so probably 6ft. min.
  50. <DM> *Whatever. He's about... 3.5 feet tall. Add his pointy Kokiri cap, and it's more like 4 feet.
  51. <Melizea> (well, if i wasn't wearing any of the transformation masks, i'd be 6ft, 8in, but since i am wearing the hylian mask, i am 5ft, 4in now.)

  53. * Melizea proceeds to look down to Franfran.
  54. <DM> *By the way, as you interrogate your new little friend here, you all can't help but notice a waft of black smoke drifting its way into the small tree-home.
  55. <DM> [Fran]: Is someone cooking bacon? No, that smells a bit more charred than bacon...
  56. * Melizea attempts to look outside. "This is rather unusual..."
  57. * Darte can only smell the remains of the inexpelicably focused fransplosion, and is rubbing his nose furiously to rid himself of it.
  58. <Melizea> (does my disturbance sense kick in or no)
  59. <DM> (uhh copy+pasta that here real fast)
  60. <Melizea> RESTRICTIONS: This is an Innate Skill. Only Geulians can learn and use this skill. There’s no limit on Innate Skills.
  61. <Melizea> DESCRIPTION: The pointy ears of Geulians allow them to sense abnormalties/disturbances, like Magic or air differences, within the given area. It doesn't help with what exactly these disturbances are, though, only that they exist.
  62. <Melizea> EFFECT: You are able to sense whether or not there is an anomaly within the current area at the current time.
  63. <Melizea> This applies to Illusions, you can still see them, though.
  64. <DM> *Oh you sense a disturbance alright. It's all around you. As you open the door to peek outside, you're hit by a heavy blast of smoke, obscuring your vision. As it clears, you look outside to see the area surrounding you literally on fire.
  65. <Melizea> "... It would appear we have a... predicament."
  66. * Melizea she turns towards the rest of the party.
  67. <DM> [Fran]: A predicament?! IS THAT FIRE?! WE GOTTA GET OUTTA HERE, FFAST.
  68. * Sephiroth , feeling a bit cramped, tries to crawl his way out through the doorway so he can at least stand up without banging heads on ceilings...
  69. <DM> *Fran removes some blanket sheets from around the room, revealing his house is uhh... for some reason...
  70. <DM> *There's bombs lined all around Fran's room.
  71. <Melizea> "We got a plan, comrades?"
  72. <Melizea> "... Oh dear..."
  73. * Sephiroth ... tries scurrying through the door.
  74. * Melizea books it out.
  75. <DM> *Sephiroth, you take one step out the doorway, and you fall 15 feet! Roll Courage vs. 15 successes!
  76. <Sephiroth> (Base or with defense die?)
  77. <DM> (Just base)

  80. * Darte blinks furiously, mental calculations grinding away, before yelping and stepping to the door, hesitating briefly as he sees Sephiroth and Mel dive downwards.

  83. <DM> *There is actually a ladder you can climb down a bit more safely, Darte. However, Fran kinda slams into you from behind.

  86. <Melizea> (i'll activate it if i somehow fail)

  90. <DM> *Sephiroth and Melizea find themselves airborne suddenly, but their quick reflexes allow them to gracefully land without injury.
  91. <DM> *Darte, meanwhile, falls out, and then tries to hookshot back in, only to grab onto Fran, who's... lept out.
  92. <DM> [Fran]: THAT'S MY FOOT, DOUCHEWAD!
  93. <Darte> "And that's my back!"
  94. <DM> *Fran trips in mid-air, kersplunking onto the ground with a snapped neck. Meanwhile Fellshard, you're sent flying into the air before dropping back down, taking... roll Courage vs. 50 successes.

  96. <DM> (Nah, you're just trying to avoid fall damage)

  104. * Melizea scans the area around.
  105. * Darte dies very precisely, dropping to zero health on the dot.
  106. <DM> YES! I DID IT!
  107. <DM> I KILLED DARTE!
  108. * Darte gives a bloody thumbs up from his corpse.
  109. <DM> *Looking around, you appear to be in Kokiri Forest... though from the stories you've heard, it's not supposed to be on fire.

  111. <DM> *Trees all around you are burning, the dirt smells of ashes, and the house behind you, which you've been warned has been rigged to explode should it catch fire...
  112. <Melizea> "Shall we make haste?"
  113. * Sephiroth attempts to make haste away from the tree he was just in, dragging Darte's corpse along. ... He doesn't want to get caught in the blast.
  114. * Melizea follows as well.
  115. * RIPDarte allows Sephiroth to drag him for a bit before allowing one of his fairies to resurrect him, sparing Sephiroth the ignominy.
  116. <DM> *Nearby, there's a group of Kokiri running by. One of them is carrying a wounded, and the other two are aiming slingshots at a squad of Stalchildren, which are rapidly running across the ground to reach the Kokiri.
  117. <DM> *Just then, the fires reach the inside of Fran's house, causing the whole tree it's in to explode. Splinters fly outwards and strike the Stalchildren, stopping them dead in their tracks.
  118. * Darte chugs red medicine and shoots the distant corpse of Fran an absolute glare before focusing on the horrible scene at ha-- HECK YEAH, FRAN'S HOUSE IS GONNNNE SUCKAH
  119. <Melizea> "Oh my."
  120. <DM> *One of said splinters spitefully strikes you in the head, Darte, causing 5 Neutral Damage and some blood to fly into the sky. For the lulz.
  121. * Sephiroth hopefully dodges splinters as he doesn't want to deal with one. ... T hose are super painful.
  122. <DM> *Nah, the splinters were particularly spiteful. You all are fine.
  123. * Darte plucks out the splinter. "Worth it."
  124. <Melizea> "Do you think they have an escape plan?"
  125. <DM> *One of the Kokiri calls out to you.
  126. <Melizea> "Unfortunate as it may be... I know not of the layout of this forest."
  127. <DM> [Kokiri]: Hey, what are you three doing here?!
  128. * Sephiroth looks around for the beckoning Kokiri.
  129. * Darte finally focuses properly on the voice. "Well, I know what we're doing here /now/, at least."
  130. <DM> *You spot them, just behind a group of crushed Stalchildren.
  131. * Sephiroth sees nothing but smoke and burnig trees. ...
  132. * Sephiroth remembers to look down.
  133. <DM> *Turns out eye-level is a bit high for the Kokiri...
  134. * Melizea looks towards the direction, looking downwards to the Kokiri.
  135. <Melizea> (*towards the direction of the voice)
  136. <Melizea> (big ol' thypo beaver)
  137. <DM> *One of them is trying to use healing magic on their downed companion, who's got claw and bite marks into his legs.
  138. * Sephiroth apparently has a spout of amnesia, not knowing exactly why he's here nor how he got here.
  139. <Melizea> "Hmm... I suppose you could say we were... summoned? Magically transported? Spawned?"
  140. <DM> [Kokiri]: You three! Do any of you have healing spells? Our friend is injured, got his leg eaten up by Stalchildren. Nasty little things they are...
  141. * Darte nods. "I can lend a hand. You two wanna sweep for more aggressors?"
  142. * Sephiroth magically pulls out a broom and begins sweeping the area.
  143. * Melizea was about to say something, but then Darte piped up, so guess not.
  144. <Melizea> (also who is darte talking to/about in relation to the "you two")
  145. <DM> *Sephiroth, you sweep the area of its ashes and the debris of Fran's house, when you find a group of crushed Stalchildren. Or at least, they should be crushed, but they are magically pulling themselves back together. One of them looks up at you, with hardly half a body and clacks its teeth.
  146. <Sephiroth> (Can I give it a boot to its head?)
  147. <DM> (Yes!)
  148. <DM> *Roll... what's kick, Courage?
  149. <DM> *Yeah, roll Courage to attack

  156. <DM> *Sephiroth, your boot straight up crushes the Stalchild back into its other recompiling companions, crushing all of them under your boot. 3 Stalchildren have kindly received "boots to their heads", and now pushing up the burning daisies.
  157. <DM> (You're all in the same area still.)
  158. <DM> [Kokiri]: Woah... you guys are really strong!
  159. <Melizea> (oh.)
  160. <DM> [Kokiri]: Umm, if it's not too much to ask you guys... could you three help us out?
  161. <DM> *Darte, what healing spell or potion would you like to apply to the bleeding Kokiri?
  162. * Melizea turns towards the Kokiri again. "What's the predicament?"
  163. * Darte shrugs. "I think I've got time, we just cleaned up the most urgent threat around, I think."
  164. * Sephiroth continues sweeping, keeping an ear out to the Kokiri.
  165. <DM> *You return to sweeping, cleaning the area of its ashes, though not quite its flames. Some burning branches fall from the canopy above, threatening to singe your perfect silver hair.
  166. * Darte hands over a pair of restoration hearts for the other kokiri to administer, then applies a Restoration Bubble to the missing leg itself.
  167. <DM> [Kokiri]: Well... not sure how to describe this one. Saria said there's an attack coming, and thing we know...
  168. <DM> *He looks around, and then back to you.
  169. <DM> [Kokiri]: Our forest is on fire. An Aquamentus blazed through here and set fire to the whole area. All the new houses we built to expand the village, all charred to a crisp.
  170. * Melizea ponders for a moment.
  171. <DM> *Darte, your Restoration Bubble manages to gradually heal and reconstruct the missing leg. The color in him starts to return, though he's still out cold.
  172. <DM> [Kokiri]: We're on our way back to the main village. Will you come with us to help protect us?
  173. <Melizea> "Hmm... Can't say I know the area well... Is there an escape plan to be in place?"
  174. * Sephiroth nods.
  175. <DM> [Kokiri]: I know it's a lot to ask, but.... I think all of Hyrule is under attack.
  176. <DM> *He chats it out with the other two, and they point somewhere due southeast, avoiding the path of flames.
  177. * Darte blinks at the kokiri. "Wait. ALL of Hyrule?"
  178. <DM> [Kokiri]: I heard from our backline that Mido's fighting off the Aquamentus in the village, but we're actually trying to relocate to the New Deku Tree.
  179. <DM> *He nods back at you.
  180. <DM> [Kokiri]: Yeah. You can't see it from here, but there's a black cloud above Lon Lon Ranch. It's... not good, I fear.
  181. <DM> *All you guys can see, looking upwards, is a burning canopy.
  182. * Darte jerks upright, cursing. "Alright. This better not be the Nightmare's doing. First thing's first: we all in agreement we should help the forest folk to safety?"
  183. <DM> [Kokiri]: I'm not sure if we should go ahead and go to the New Deku Tree, or help Mido. I don't know, I've never... really been in a war before.
  184. <Melizea> "It is apparent this is a war on survivability."
  185. * Melizea turns to Darte. "We shall aid them if we can. Ensure safety first."
  186. * Sephiroth nods to Darte
  187. * Darte nods firmly. "I trust this New Deku Tree can guard from the flames. Anyone of you besides Mido capable to fight?"
  188. <Melizea> "If it is necessary for us, we can fight."
  189. <Melizea> "However, safety of the residents are utmost priority."
  190. <DM> *The two with Slingshots raise a salute towards you. The other Kokiri wraps the unconscious one around his shoulders.
  191. <DM> [Kokiri]: Yeah, we can all fight. I don't know how many of us are left though. The frontline... didn't see it coming.
  192. <DM> *He struggles to fight back tears, biting his lip. He looks back up at you with a resolute look in his eyes.
  193. <DM> [Kokiri]: No. We're going to fight. We're taking back our village, even if it kills us!
  194. <Darte> (Oh gosh he used Puppy Eyes, I thought DM banned that years ago)
  195. * Sephiroth exits, stage left.
  196. * DM strangles Darte with puppies.
  197. * Sephiroth attempts to begin heading towards the Village.
  198. <DM> *Alright, you all head on over to Kokiri Village, following the trail of flames! With Sephiroth using his handy broom to sleep the flames to the side, you manage to avoid getting burned.
  199. <Melizea> (i was gonna say something, but then master dm pulled a fast one)
  200. * Melizea is now following the rest of the party.
  201. <DM> *Unfortunately, the flames have already devoured much of the forest, charring its greenery to a blackened husk of what it once was.
  202. * Darte shakes his head ruefully. "Could've tried to lay down some water, but far too late. Safety now, rebuild later. Let's find any escapees and help them up."
  203. <Melizea> "Indeed."
  204. <DM> *Eventually, you reach Kokiri Village. There, you can see about a dozen Kokiri, each armed with short swords, dashing around and about, fending off Stalfos twice their size, and a large hunking Aquamentus in the center. It inhales, and a moment later, it exhales a wave of fireballs.
  205. <DM> *You see the fireballs crash into a group of houses, igniting them.
  206. <Darte> "Those are the slowest-moving fireballs I've ever seen."
  207. <DM> *With your Spirit Vision, you can see, there are a few Kokiri still trapped inside those houses.
  208. <Melizea> "Do we have anything that could deter the attention even if just for a bit?"
  209. * Sephiroth saunters up to the Aquamentus and pokes it.
  210. <DM> [Kokiri]: We've got some Deku Nuts. I don't know how good it'll be against that big dragon.
  211. <DM> *You wander right up and deal 1 Neutra- wait you have Super Poke.
  212. <Melizea> (how dumb would it be to use my drive blade to carve out an entrance or something)
  213. <DM> *2 Neutral Damage to the Aquamentus!
  214. <Melizea> "Hmm... Any citizens still in limbo?"
  215. * Darte yelps, sprinting towards the nearest of the newly-flaming houses. "Worth a shot!" he calls back, brandishing a blade as he approaches.
  216. <Darte> (Can he tell how thick the house walls are?)
  217. <DM> Aquamentus: 364h, 10m
  218. * Sephiroth then tries ducking behind a log..
  219. * Melizea follows Darte as well, just in case.
  220. <DM> *It slowly turns its head around, moving its body so that it doesn't snap its own neck. It looks around, but all it sees is a inconspicuous log.
  221. <DM> *Just to clarify, this sucker is about... 20ish feet tall? It's a big boi.
  222. <Melizea> (chonky boi)
  223. <DM> *Darte and Melizea, with the Aquamentus temporarily occupied, you reach the flaming houses. Though, in your way, there's a pair of Stalfos. They turn to look at you, raising their shields.
  224. <DM> *The Aquamentus is about to set fire to the log, when the Kokiri you traveled with suddenly strike it with Deku Nuts, dazing and blinding it!
  225. * Melizea turns to Darte. "Think you can handle them for a moment?"
  226. * Sephiroth tries to use opportunity to catch up with Darte.
  227. * Darte nods. "You handle the ones inside, I'll hold these!"
  228. * Melizea looks/jumps around to find a suitable entrance to the interiors of the houses.
  229. * Darte punctuates that with a taunt thrown at one of the Stalfos.
  230. <DM> *You barrel roll through some flames, and courtesies of your previous experiences from a past life walking through flames like it's nothing, you apparently don't take damage. You arrive to see Darte facing off against a pair of Stalfos, while Melizea leaps ahead to save those trapped inside.
  231. <Darte> "Gonna roll you like the bones you are!"
  232. <Darte> (I hear the cry of the planet)
  233. <DM> *From beyond the fourth wall, a fallen Strife shudders at the sight of you walking through flames, striking up some PTSD within him. He takes cover within the Lifestream.
  234. <DM> *Roll yer Wisdom, Darte!
  235. * Sephiroth high-fives the fourth wall.
  236. * DM high-fives back.
  237. <Darte> $30d10
  238. <Navi> Darte: You rolled 30 Dice with 10 Sides. Results: 2, 1, 9, 7, 6, 7, 6, 5, 3, 5, 4, 6, 10, 4, 3, 7, 5, 4, 7, 6, 8, 10, 6, 7, 1, 5, 4, 8, 9 and 4. Total: 169. Successes: 22.
  239. <DM> *The doors of each house are already starting to fall apart. Looks to be the only real way into any of these treehouses.

  242. <Melizea> (how fallen apart are said doors? like completely collapsed? halfway? something else?)
  243. <DM> *Yep, you very easily catch the Stalfos' attention. They each raise their blades at you, which appear to be... Stalfos spines, reforged into jagged edge blades.
  244. <DM> (You could probably barrel roll through em.)
  245. * Sephiroth does a barrel roll!
  246. * Melizea attempts to go inside one of the doors.
  247. <Melizea> (err, inside one of the houses)
  248. <DM> *Sephiroth, you leave the fighting to Darte as you barrel roll through one of the houses. Melizea avoids the burning door damage as she jumps in after you.

Over, and over, and over, smashing its head in repeatedly, well past the point its neck has snapped.

  771. <DM> *As you smash it into the ground over and over, the ground cracks several times, and at last, on the 9th drop, you splatter its corpse into a straight up crater, causing an explosion from within its fiery remains. The fires dance around you, and you casually hold your sword out to the side as One Winged Angel echoes in the background.

  783. <DM> *She looks at the Aquamentus corpse, or... whatever the heck is left of its grotesque remains.
  784. <DM> [Saria]: ... is that the Aquamentus?
  785. <Melizea> "Yes."
  786. <Sephiroth> " ... Yes."
  787. <DM> *She blinks a few times, then slowly turns to each of you, bewildered.
  788. <Darte> "Was."
  789. <DM> [Saria]: You're all.. quite powerful, I see.
  790. <DM> *Darte and Sephiroth, the new Kokiri bows to you.
  791. * Melizea takes out the green crystal, if it wasn't already out.
  792. <DM> [Saria]: I'm Saria, the Forest Sage, and leader of this village. Thank you, all three of you, for coming to our aid.
  793. * Darte blinks, then bows in return, then blinks harder. "O-oh! A sage!"
  794. <DM> *Melizea, you feel a connection to it, as if you could trigger some magic into it yourself. You're not sure where you'd end up though...

  796. * Darte shuffles in mild discomfort.
  797. <DM> [Saria]: No need for pleasantries.
  798. <DM> [Saria]: While you all were distracting the dragon, Mido and I managed to evacuate the rest of the village to the New Deku Tree.
  799. <DM> *She points further to the east, where you see a passageway that leads into a deeper part of the forest, so far untouched by the flames of the invasion.
  800. <DM> [Saria]: Please, help us protect our forest. I have a way of restoring it, but I'll need time.
  801. * Darte nods, relaxing a bit. "And that'll keep them protected in the New Deku Tree?"
  802. <Melizea> (wait, i thought i was supposed to hand the green crystal back to saria? considering she did say "hold onto this for me" or similar)
  803. <DM> (You can either hold onto it yourself, or return it. Your call.)
  804. <DM> [Saria]: I... don't know. I've been in periodic contact with the other Sages, and... to be honest, I don't think we can hold out forever.
  805. * Melizea presents the green crystal to Saria. "I suppose you want this returned?"
  806. <DM> [Saria]: But the forest is our home, and even we can't hold it, we'll need a place to return to. With the Spiritual Stone, the Forest Medallion, and the powers of the New Deku Tree, I should be able to protect the forest, at the very least, before we have to evacuate.
  807. <DM> *She turns to you.
  808. <DM> [Saria]: Hold onto it that piece of Farore's Wind for now. It'll let me teleport to you, or you to me.
  809. <Melizea> "I see."
  810. <DM> *Both Farore's Wind and Nayru's Love are in close proximity to each other. It's startin' to feel like a Zelda game in here!
  811. * Melizea proceeds to pocket it.
  812. * Sephiroth bows in return.
  813. <DM> [Saria]: Are you all ready?
  814. <Melizea> "Indeed."
  815. <DM> *Okay, if you're all ready now...
  816. <DM> *You all head on out further to the east, deeper into the forest. Down the passageway that leads to the New Deku Tree, where you're engulfed in darkness. You're almost to the end, when...
