  1. April [For] Fool's
  2.
  3. April fools! Such a stupid day. I never fell for any of those stupid pranks, well ever since I grew up. So why am I talking about April Fools? Well, this wasn't a regular April's 1st, no not at all. It was a pretty normal morning, I slept in, as per usual, and I was running late for college. My mum always made some corny April Fools joke before I left the house. Since she's my mum, I hid the disappointment behind a chuckle. I was never considered a fun guy, I didn't really like jokes, I didn't like seasonal holidays, it just wasn't my thing, and April Fool's day was not excluded. I kept to my self at college, I was there to work, not make friends I told myself, though I knew I couldn't make any regardless. People always thought I was mysterious and cool, and they thought I was a drug dealer because how messed up my eyes were and how I acted strangely, but I was just a boring young man who couldn't sleep. I didn't do much in my free time, though I did have an interest in geography at high school. That interest lead me to the joy that is seismology. Seismology? What is that you may be thinking? Well, since I am clearly a professional, let me explain. Seismology is the study of earthquakes. I know what you're thinking. Why would anyone enjoy studying earthquakes? Geography wasn't the only reason I got interested in seismology. I actually experienced an earthquake when I was a young boy, and though it was scary, I wanted to find out why the ground shook like that, and so geography was the gateway to finding my passion. Our country was close to a tectonic plate, though it has been over a decade since we had an earthquake. Every day I'd check my Richter scale on my desk just in case. I'm not going to lie when I say I sort of hoped we'd get one. I wanted to be the random young boy who saved lives by alerting everyone ahead of time. But this was not the day I would have ever hoped there'd be one. No, this happened on the worst possible day.

  5. My eyelids peeled themselves open as I looked at the dull ceiling above me. I guess it's just another boring day. I wiped the sleepiness out of my tired eyes as I rose up and glanced over to my alarm. "Huh, I am actually awake at the right time," I thought. I looked at my Richter scale like I did every morning, only to realize that it's broken. I spent so much money on that only for it to break. Well since I have all this time, I guess I can fix it. Sleepily, I went over to my desk, sat on my chair, and examined it, but the only problem was that I couldn't find the problem? Nothing seemed out of place, but it was showing what looked like seismic activity. Then I tried turning it on and off again to see if that'd do the trick. I hit flipped the switch off and then immediately back on. The readings were the same. Hmm, maybe it wasn't broken? Wait, was this the day I had been waiting for? Was this the day I would become a national hero for saving lives? My heart started to beat even faster, I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my body and coursing through my veins..
  6. "Mom! There's a massive earthquake about to happen!"
  7. "Sweetie, you really think that one would work? Hahaha, good one."
  8. "Mom, what do you mean? I am not kidding."
  9. I glanced back at the scale to confirm I wasn't daydreaming.
  10. "Oh, while you're at it, I'm not your real mother, haha."
  11. "Mom, why are you acting so weird? I'm not kidding around."
  12. "Oh, yes, and this 'earthquake' just so happens to be on April first. Sure..." she said sarcastically.
  13. I grabbed my mobile and turned it on. 'April 1st, 2019,' it read. Oh no. Oh no! She thought I was pulling a joke but this time I'm serious.
  14. "Mom this is not a joke, you have to believe me!"
  15. "I believe you..."
  16. It was no use. I had to get to school and tell the science teachers, they'd believe me. I quickly snapped a picture of my Richter Scale and quickly got dress. Before I could even eat, I rushed out the door.
  17. "Bye Mum!"
  18. "But, dear, I didn't get to tell you min-"
  19.
  20. I was panting like a dog. I don't think I had ever gotten to school this early before. It was empty, just like a ghost town. I looked at the clock at the entrance. It was 7:14 AM. Perfect! The teachers would be present so I could tell them what was going on. I rushed to the science department and burst through the doors of the one science teacher I knew I could trust.
  21. "Mr. Young!" I shouted, whilst bending over with my hands on knees to catch my breath.
  22. "Surprised to see your face this early, haha. What's the issue?"
  23. "Mr. Young, my Richter Scale..."
  24. "What about it?"
  25. "There's going to be an earthquake sir, I am serious!"
  26. "Oh, yes, and do you have any proof of this mysterious 'earthquake?'" he said with a smirk on his face.
  27. "Yes! Yes I do, sir."
  28. I grabbed my phone out my back pocket and quickly scrolled through the gallery to find the picture.
  29. "Here, sir," I said as I ran over and handed the phone to him. He put his glasses on and sat down, glaring at the photo intensely.
  30. "Wow," he said.
  31. "Yes sir, I know, I am as shocked as you are. My mum didn't believe me so I came straight to you. What are we going to do? What are w-"
  32. "Wow, the fact that you would go to such lengths to pull a such a well-crafted joke on me, well done. Very well done!"
  33. "No, sir!" I cried out.
  34. "Calm down. I get it, you wanted to get me, and I appreciate the effort."
  35. Out of all 365 days in the year, today was the day I had finally gotten signs of an earthquake and not a small one but a major one, yet no one believed me. I had to find someone outside of school, someone that had found the same information. I headed to the office to ask to leave.
  36. "I need to leave, now, there is going to be a massive earthquake, I need to get help. "
  37. "Yeah sure, just leave." the office lady said.
  38. "Thank you so much, I appreciate it."
  39. "April fools! Get back to class, you skipper."
  40. "I'm telling the truth, please!"
  41. "Do you know that it's illegal to skip school without a valid reason, and we can get the cops here at any moment?"
  42. As much as I wanted to tell someone, I knew sitting in a prison cell for something as stupid as leaving school wasn't going to be any better, so I reluctantly went back to class. I only had a couple of classes today, so it'd be no time before I could get out.
  43.
  44. In physics, I couldn't even work. All I was thinking about was the ground beginning to shake at any moment. Then, suddenly I felt it. The vibrations began as the ground began to shake. I lifted my head out of my arms and jumped under my desk.
  45. "Hah! Look at him hiding."
  46. Oh, the apparently we were studying sound waves and one of the boys thought it'd be funny to put the soundbox up to maximum to make the ground vibrate.
  47. "Very funny, dude."
  48. "Haha! Earthquake Boy is paranoid."
  49. "Shut up dude, and turn that damn thing off!"
  50. I slouched my head back into my arms and began drifting off again, waiting for school to end. The ground started shaking once again. This guy thinks he's funny, doesn't he?
  51. "Dude, turn the thing off! We get it, you're funny."
  52. I looked over, but the soundbox was unplugged.
  53. "I did. That isn't me."
