- Technology from Johnson Contols Inc is the subject of debate in a lawsuit between the Federated University Police Officers’ Association and the University of California. At UC Irvine, surveillance technology was installed at the campus police station. The microphones on advanced cameras were recording sound through walls; even recording people in restrooms. This technology was "eavesdropping on rank and file police officers" and members of the the public. It is not known at this time if this technology has been used at the police stations of other University of California campuses. Here in Berkeley, Johnson Controls does have ties to LBNL, where shared research is done on power solutions, next generation batteries, and smart grids.
- Johnson Controls is headquartered in Wisconsin, and donated $14,555 to Republican Scott Walker's 2010 gubernatorial campaign. And previously, during George W Bush administration, the corporation lobbied the White House, the US Department of Defense, the Dept of Veterans Affairs, Dept of Energy, Dept of Health and Human Services, Office of Management and Budget, Department of the Interior, the Senate and Congress. 65% of Johnson Control's political donations are to the RNC and Republican candidates, including past donations to George W Bush, John McCain, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.
- Johnson Controls has a surveillance contract for the Baghdad Airport, which includes the creating a surveillance network for over 400 cameras at the airport, the highway to the airport and at Baghdad's city center. Johnson Controls also contracts HVAC and surveillance for hotels in Baghdad. Johnson Controls has a subsidiary 'Readiness Management Support' which has contracted with the AirForce, Navy and various projects in Iraq.
