- tl;dr Following his public brutalization, Cameron awakes in a cell and clings to the only thing that prevents him from losing his mind. His pride.
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Cameron awoke to the sound of the rats scampering around the inside of his cell. When he tried to get up in an effort to pinpoint them, he was overwhelmed by a sharp pain that originated from his head and traveled all the way down to his toes. Every inch of his body had been beaten to oblivion.
- If this kept up, the young man would be desensitized to pain. If being battered to the ground was the consequence he had to endure for being himself, it was something he would grow used to in time.
- The youngling slowly moved his fingers to his mouth, wincing in pain as tinges of agony echoed inside his bones.
- Speaking his mind was what made Cameron, well--Cameron.
- And now he had been robbed of the one thing he held dear, more than anything else in the world. The conduit he used to express the controversial thoughts that filled the flood chambers of his mind.
- For a moment, he gave into the fear and anxiety that accompanied such a loss. The voice was the ultimate form of expression, and his had been taken from him on account of his pride.
- Cameron felt like he was choking. Tears, though not present yet, soon would be if he did not do something to stop them. He furrowed his brows, closing his eyes as he grit his bloodied teeth.
- No.
- To cry was to admit defeat.
- He had been dehumanized by the masses, labeled a lamb for the slaughter. Cameron refused to allow himself to accept the weakness others took advantage of; he would allow his spirit to waver.
- Clenching his fist, he reminded himself of the pain he would have to endure for the foreseeable future and used that to fuel his resolve. A cry of agony and vigor filled the air, only to be drowned out by the brick walls that called themselves his captor.
- No.
- This was not the end, it couldn't be.
- (Cameron Lawrence)
