- In the near future, the company "The Union" provides expensive prosthesis to improve the lives of the clients. However, the company sends repo men to retrieve the artificial organs for those that do not pay the installments. The former soldiers Remy and his best friend Jake are among the best repo men of the company; however Remy's job cost his marriage and his wife Carol leaves him. When Remy is ready to request to be transferred to the sales department expecting to save his marriage, he has an accident with a defibrillator and he needs heart transplantation. The prosthesis is very expensive and Remy changes his behavior after the medical procedure, and he is no longer capable of chasing the debtors. Meanwhile Remy helps the singer Beth, who owes a large amount to The Union, and sooner they are chased by the repo men.
- In the future humans have extended and improved our lives through highly sophisticated and expensive mechanical organs created by a company called "The Union". The dark side of these medical breakthroughs is that if you don't pay your bill, "The Union" sends its highly skilled repo men to take back its property... with no concern for your comfort or survival. Former soldier Remy is one of the best organ repo men in the business. But when he suffers a cardiac failure on the job, he awakens to find himself fitted with the company's top-of-the-line heart-replacement... as well as a hefty debt. But a side effect of the procedure is that his heart's no longer in the job. When he can't make the payments, The Union sends its toughest enforcer, Remy's former partner Jake, to track him down.
- This is a film whose entire storyline – as slim as it is – seems to have been inspired by a sketch in Monty Python's MEANING OF LIFE, which has a sketch of a pensioner losing their liver to a couple of repossession men. Well, those men are brought to life in this futuristic thriller which fills its running time with gobbets of surgical gore and a man-on-the-run narrative that will be overly familiar to even the most intermittent of modern film viewers. Jude Law is cocky and rather irritating as a brutish, cold-hearted rent collector type who finds himself on the run when his former colleagues turn against him.<br/><br/>The look and feel of the film is very similar to Spielberg's MINORITY REPORT, albeit with a lower budget, and it's clear that there are some major problems here. The whole thing takes nearly an hour to get going before it starts to pick up momentum and become interesting, and then it seems to finish all too quickly. Also, for a movie advertised as an action thriller, it's rather light on the action; a stunning, OLDBOY-inspired corridor fight at the climax helps to make up for this, but it's not quite enough. And don't get me started on the absolutely stupid twist ending, which sucks out all the visceral enjoyment the viewer has just taken from the production.<br/><br/>Despite the flaws and general coldness of the production, it's difficult to dislike REPO MEN. It's clear that this was written and created by young, slightly immature men content to riff on previously explored topics rather than delivering genuinely innovative product, but it still delivers on a superficial level; you want to know what happens next, and the thrills satisfy. The cast are perfunctory: Alice Braga and Liev Schreiber make virtually no impact in highly predictable supporting roles, and while Forest Whitaker gets a little more of a look in, even he doesn't get a great deal to work with. Law, meanwhile, plays it off-hand and it doesn't work; he needed to be much more tortured for a role like this. It's not bad as it stands, but it could have been a whole lot more with some real maturity applied to the premise.
- I said before that it's not bad to recall many movies while watching a new one. However, it's real bad when you find out that it's lower than these very movies. This what happens while watching (Repo Men), and it isn't the only shortcoming too ! <br/><br/>In many places, (Repo Men) looks like (Blade Runner), (Brazil), and (Minority Report). And it isn't as good as any of them. Clearly, it wanted to make a sci-fi with social commentary about Man vs. System in dystopian world, yet with some action and heavy gore, to end up between a less meaty remake of many classics and a customary thriller ! <br/><br/>The script causes many disturbances and dangerous questions. I hated how the wife's character was written semi-mute. The love story between the lead and that singer was so rushed. And the matter of how "the friend did it" disappointed big part of the movie's satire to eventually seem as just a movie about 2 friends, one of them is crazy ! <br/><br/>I didn't get how that friend was so assured that the lead wouldn't leave his job "after" the heart transplanting ? Or how that so successful lead didn't save any money to pay for that transplanting ?! Or how could an ordinary typewriter explode a man's head ??!! There are many questions such as these by the way !<br/><br/>Then, the dream part. It's stupid. For one reason, it's the same ending of a famous classic, so why to remake it, and not do something of your own ? And for another, it's not played smartly, where it harms your passivity as a viewer. Like it was done 3 years before in (Next), there is a mean manipulation with you. Why not discovering that putting the lead into that "sweet dreams" condition took place right after the climactic action sequence for instance? This way we – as viewers – wouldn't be that disappointed. It's lousy when a movie lies on you this long, let alone gives you the victory then tells you "Sorry, we were cheating you" !! Whatever the purposed shock effect you must detest the movie and your preoccupation with it. Thus while the hate, by this end, was aimed at the lead's weakness (mainly in you), it would hit the movie as well !<br/><br/>Actually, the movie got silly and absurd in its third act, with many forced points like how getting into the company's headquarters required an organ, not a keyboard. And opening the door of that headquarters needed another organ (!!). Let alone the way how the lead suddenly turned into unbeatable Superman. It's not cleverness to do all of this then lay the responsibility on the fact that "it was a dream !!" <br/><br/>While the story somehow had an inspiring side, the direction didn't utilize a lot to be genius or clever. I was really sad for certain scenes where they could have been made way better, instead of feeling so unremarkable (walking amongst the murdered-by-the-company poor people under the ground was of course one). There was no moving, aesthetic, or memorable scene along the way (maybe the bloody end where slicing bodies was done like making love). So the story was handled poorly compared to its potential.<br/><br/>The fistfights were very well choreographed. The rest of the action wasn't any visually dazzling; such as the fight of the ship. And the last fight – in specific – was unsatisfied, with narrow area and illogical everything.<br/><br/>(Jude Law) is a heck of an actor. He as if wanted a hit movie yet with a substance, where he does action along with acting. Here, I won't say that I loved his acting alone, because everybody acted finely. However, in the big picture, it is more than disappointing when you watch believable performance in the middle of unbelievable events !<br/><br/>The soundtrack tried to enhance the human side of the lead, especially against the beastly career he lives, with many beautiful jazz oldies. If only the whole movie was as perfect ?! <br/><br/>With little intellectual deepness and immoderate violence, (Repo Men) deflates to a usual B movie. And even as that B movie, it isn't flashy or amusing. Hence, it's generally a great idea in a cheap dealing, which makes it one of the "could have been great" movies, regrettably !<br/><br/>P.S : I think (Repo Men) might be remembered in the future, not for its creativeness or entertainment, but for its unhappy end. Amongst all the Man vs. System movies lately, nearly none had miserable windup for its warrior lead.
- The movie shares this premise with 2008's "Repo!: The Genetic Opera." It would be worth researching who ripped off whom if both weren't ghastly.
- Repo Men is based on the novel The Repossession Mambo by Eric Garcia. It's called "Burn My Shadow" by UNKLE. The DVD and Blu-ray disc releases of the film contain both the theatrical version (rated R) and an unrated version of the movie. The longer cut has approximately 7 minutes of additional footage, mostly containing story-driven scenes but also some slight corrections of editing mistakes and some new gore. a5c7b9f00b
