The first time I watched the pilot it was my assumption that Vaggie was some kind of fallen angel/heavenly ambassador. I saw the warrior angels in the cold open and when I got a look at Vaggie in the show proper I was all like

But evidently she's a moth demon. One anon suggested the reason she looks the way she does is because she's doing the thing where moths make themselves look like predators to get fkers to leave them alone.

Given that you can see it in front of her hair and its still in the same spot over her eyepatch when she brushes her hair aside, I think it's some kind of mystical thing. Like, demons are demonstrated to have general supernatural powers on top of them shapeshifting into their "true forms", so maybe her power is the ability to look more menacing to potential threats in her environment. Maybe her "true form" looks like an exterminator put through the nightmare filter with some insectile traits added in keeping with the moth demon thing.
