The title of my artwork is “Connection Between Competition”. The discipline I choose was pencil. In my art work there are two people comparing their foot side to see how long it is and comparing to see whos is longer. This is showing the connection where people come up to people they have never met and compete due to foot size. I choose positive and negative space in my design with the feet in the positive space and the full black background is in negative space. I made the artwork positive and negative space by outlining the foot with the white outline making it stand out over the negative space. This element shows that there can be some positive sides to competition but also negative sides.

I created my artwork by first making a rough outline of the foot shape and slowly shading in from there. I then used a paper pencil to smudge a bit and refine the shading to the maximum capacity. Once I did this I made an outline around the foot then drew in a black background. I made this artwork out of solely pencils of different shades and varieties. The artwork was made out of mostly 2B and 6B pencils. I chose this medium to give my piece a rugged and dramatic effect. I used a lot of standard shading in my work and that is nearly 100% of the technique behind it. I feel that this technique really provides a sense of space in my artwork and also depth.

Just before you announced this assignment someone came up to me and was like “woah, how big are your feet?” I have never talked to this person before and never have seen them. I replied with my foot size. We instantly had a connection there and we later became friends and ate together at taco bell. In my artwork I tried to show the darkness of competition with the dark black background and the greatness of connectivity with the white outline around the foot. My natural connection is the connection between two people; People naturally connect to other people and it is a fact which is why I chose it as my natural connection. I would love for people to see that in my work I convey the powerful connection with the white outline and the glow yet still show how competition keeps these two things apart. I would love for people to see the deeper meaning.

While creating this art piece I went through trial and error slowly and slowly getting closer to my goal. I tried stippling at first but realized with my time frame and my lack of focus that method would not work. After a few other attempts I managed to come to the conclusion that I would have to use standard shading. I went through a few challenges using this method but then quickly overcame them. I was not sure how to blend at first but then realized I could use my fingers as long as a paper pencil. A very successful part of my piece was when I learnt to shade the ankles correctly. The final piece came out much differently than I imagined but that is the beauty of art. You could think of one thing and the more you go with it, it can come out as one whole other masterpiece. I am very happy with my artwork and also the project in general I would love to do it again! If I were to change one thing though it would be the position of the feet, They are way towards the left and it is very ugly and rushed looking in my opinion.
