- The Dark Book is a top-down indie action RPG with a superficially interesting premise. We play as a skeleton warrior in an undead society, and we learn that the Necronomicon has gone missing. We must reobtain it, or it could be used to put the dead—that's us—to rest forever. It's a cute subversion of normal narrative tropes. Instead of trying to stop the undead, we are the undead, and we want to stop the living from making us dead again. Unfortunately, that synopsis is the most interesting thing about The Dark Book. It's a functional action RPG, sure, with weapon durability, dungeons, a variety of skills, some rudimentary loot, but there's no real game design or creative conceit to set it apart. It's as bland as bland gets, and what's worse, no player skill is necessary. Playing this game isn't an exercise in critical thought, strategizing, or maneuvering. It's all about the progression mechanics. You kite enemies, attack them, and heal. Repeat, repeat, repeat. They die slightly faster when you get new weapons. And maybe that doesn't sound so bad, but it's tippy-topped to the brim with other annoyances like invisible enemies, control bugs, and microtransaction features. Because yeah, this is a really, really obvious mobile port. I can't see anything particularly interesting or valuable in the Dark Book, beyond its goofy narrative, and I strongly urge you to get your ARPG fix elsewhere.
