  1. Barovian Legends FAQ
  2.
  3. >I just want to participate, what do I need to know if I don't care about mechanics?
  4.
  5. Every decision will allow write-ins, including combat. Write-ins need votes just like suggested decisions. The highest voted decision will always be selected. Some of the options I list will specify skills in brackets, e.g. (Deception) or (Animal Handling); this means if the option is chosen, a skill check (d20 roll with a modifier) will be called for to see if that action is successful. Some pre-written options may include a DC, for example (Stealth, DC 12). DC stands for Difficulty Class, and refers to the minimum roll required for the check to succeed. If there is no DC listed, the DC is unknown to Aranuel.

  7. >How do I roll?
  8.
  9. When a roll is called for, I will specify "best out of X" - 1 roll per person. Follow the instructions (e.g. it may say to roll 2d20 and pick the highest option if Aranuel has advantage on the roll) and the highest result out of X will be selected. For /qst/ newfags, you roll by putting a string like "dice+1d20" in the options field.

  11. >How does this quest work mechanically?
  12.
  13. This quest follows the rules of Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition. The following changes have been made to make it quest-friendly:
  14. - No initiative rolls. Instead, Aranuel and all friendly NPCs automatically act first in combat, unless the party is surprised.
  15. - All NPCs deal average damage if their attacks land. Only Aranuel rolls for damage.
  16. - All combat-related damage and healing is doubled. This should effectively cut the length of combat encounters in half.
  17. You can review a simplified summary of D&D 5e's rules here: https://5e.tools/quickreference.html#bookref-quick,-1
  18.
  19. >How is "best out of X" determined for rolls?
  20.
  21. When calling for important d20 rolls, we will use best out of 3. This is increased when the party is outnumbered in combat (by the amount outnumbered) up to a maximum of 5, unless Aranuel has disadvantage on the roll. If Aranuel has disadvantage, we will always use best out of 2. Advantage/disadvantage is applied to individual attempts (i.e., 2d20, use lowest or highest).
