  1. 11:21] <TwinPhoenix> Next weekend is good though
  2. [11:22] <NNJ> Sounds good to me. Not sure if 11 am works for me, tho. We'll see.
  3. [11:23] <Luke_Wolf> you need an Overarching story that you can choose to be involved with or not, along with a number of preset sidequests, you also need a random quest generator that allows you to keep doing jobs, but all of the quests can't be completely arbitrary you can't just say go to this field out here full of spawners and kill off a whole bunch and return... no that's just arbitrary and gives no sense of forward progress, Now on the other paw we can look
  4. [11:23] <Luke_Wolf> at The Witcher for an example of having relatively well handled drop quests. Essentially being side quests that gave you money that you completed largely as a result of working on other quests. Although there were boss type drop contracts but that's somewhat different, and also was typically solved en route to another quest. Essentially the big point here is that you need three strains of quest types, The Campaign which a lot of time and
  5. [11:23] <Luke_Wolf> quality is focused on, Sidequests which are far less strict in terms of quality concerns and are strewn about everywhere but there's actually something to them, and then randomly generated quests that quality doesn't really matter so much on but serves as side work to do en route for other quests and such.
  6. [11:23] <Luke_Wolf> Wing Commander: Privateer is a good example of sandbox gameplay done right
  7. [11:24] <Luke_Wolf> Derek Smart's simulators are examples of it done very wrong
  8. [11:26] <Luke_Wolf> also there's a lot to be said for the underlying RPG engine, because as much as it's tried to be forced D&D style doesn't map well to real time RPGs
  9. [11:26] <Luke_Wolf> Sierra however had it right
  10. [11:27] <Luke_Wolf> which is to say what you do in a world works up your skill and stat levels
  11. [11:28] <Luke_Wolf> essentially say your character is sneaking around that improves their stealth skill as well as agility stat
  12. [11:28] <Luke_Wolf> and even non-skill related having an effect
  13. [11:29] <Luke_Wolf> say having your character running around, overtime under a Sierra engine would have your character build up strength
  14. [11:29] <Luke_Wolf> and endurance
  15. [11:30] <NNJ> Finished?
  16. [11:30] <NNJ> Don't want to interrupt.
  17. [11:30] <Luke_Wolf> hm.. I guess so
  18. [11:30] <NNJ> Alright, let me answer those.
  19. [11:31] <NNJ> About the quests: These are points I agree with, undoubtly. The "bring me 10 rattails" quests are outdated and shouldn't be present. And a good story is pretty much what the developer has on his list, as far as I know. He even wants to give the NPCs personalities. How they react is influenced by how you treat them, or help them.
  20. [11:32] <-- TwinPhoenix has left this server (Ping timeout: 121 seconds).
  21. [11:33] <NNJ> About the Skills: Antilia has no D&D. Antilia works based upon alot of skills which level up by use. It is planned that related skills level up by a lower rate, too. If there is something like 'running around and get stronger' remains to be seen. But the game is in Alpha, so: Suggest it!
  22. [11:33] <NNJ> For example: Fishing. To fish you need a a fishing stick and bait.
  23. [11:34] <NNJ> You've alot of different fishing skills, tho. Like, Drag and Short Cast. They all have different effects. Drag is drifting the cord from left to right, Short Cast makes you throw it out further into the sea.
  24. [11:35] <NNJ> And by that variety you can choose: Am I the guy who likes to fish by driving out on his boat? So you'd need to level the skill to let the cord fall deeper. Get the fish from down there.
  25. [11:36] <NNJ> Or am I the dude who prefers the beaches, where you can stand in the water, fishing and relaxing both at the same time.
  26. [11:37] <NNJ> It's not D&D. It's different. But I can hardly say more.
  27. [11:38] <Luke_Wolf> Well skills and related skills sound like they're being handled properly, but is working on skills working on stats directly?
  28. [11:39] <NNJ> As it's in Alpha, there are no attributes. So every1 can test out every skill, to find bugs and the like.
