- "So here's the news." Ian moved off the wall and kept pace with Eddie as he left the locker room.
- "Go."
- "Okay, May is auditioning dates, Oliver still thinks he has a chance with Tess, Glade is being a dirty nonconformist hippy, Renee and Mal are, quote, 'probably going as friends or junk', and you and me are going with the two hottest girls in school for sure."
- "How sure?"
- "As sure as I am that you look like a dork in your baseball cap."
- "You suck." Eddie told him as he swivelled the cap around on his head so the "Steelhold Cleavers" emblem on its front faced backwards.
- "You know I totally don't."
- "Got your water." Renee handed Eddie a water bottle as she appeared at his right.
- "Thanks." He said, taking a drink.
- "I also got Mal to agree to give you a last-minute tutor session so you can pass this Chemistry test. I also have a number of fallback dates for the dance in case you can't get anyone hot."
- "You rock, Renee."
- "I know."
- "Hey, anyone been asking about going to the dance with me?" Ian leaned forward to look at her past Eddie.
- "Take a guess, Montgomery."
- "Not even Tiana?"
- "She's going with Patrick."
- "Well that's just sad." Ian's ears drooped and he nearly didn't notice that the other two had stopped.
- After a few seconds Malcolm looked up from his spot leant on his locker. "Oh. Hey." As they resumed walking, he trotted into his place at Renee's right.
- "What's the news?" He addressed Renee.
- "Ian can't get a date."
- "I can! I will! You'll see. I just can't get a back-up date." He shouldered the front door of the school open, "You'll see! I won't need a back-up date when I secure a date for both me and my man Ed with the two hottest girls in school."
- "Sorry, I'm going with Mal. As a friend."
- "You'll see!" He insisted. "Shorty. Hippie." He greeted Oliver and Glade as they hopped off their seats on the stair wall and joined the party at Ian's left.
- "Dick." They answered in unison.
- "Where's May?" Eddie asked them.
- "She has cheerleading practice Friday afternoons." Renee reminded him.
- "Oh yeah."
- "Hey Mal." Oliver dropped behind the rest of the group.
- "Oliver." Mal followed suit.
- "You talk to Tess, right?"
- "I have been known to, on occasion."
- "Has she say anything about me?"
- He thought about this for a moment. "Does she ever call you 'poundcake'? Like, as a nickname?"
- "Not as far as I'm aware."
- "Then no. She has said anything about poundcake though." Mal raised his voice, "Hey guys, do you think we should start calling Oliver Poundcake?"
- "I vote yes." Ian answered immediately.
- "I hate poundcake, so yes." Glade answered.
- "You guys suck."
- "Yeah, yeah, we know." Eddie told him.
