  1. >be me
  2. >be refugee from non-descript east-european country
  3. >Right-wing death squads roam the countryside, taking out anyone that has any Turkish blood or is otherwise "unclean"
  4. >West will not take my family in because they are "full"
  5. >Мама visits every embassy in the nearby city that is still left standing in the hopes that one of their representative countries would eventually take us in
  6. >Most of them have evacuated long ago but she holds out hope and goes out everyday despite the looming dangers
  7. >One day she comes home, she has a wide smile on her face
  8. >Apparently some country across the ocean has accepted our request for asylum
  9. >Me, Елена and Тата are overjoyed at this
  10. >As we are packing there is a loud knock on the door
  11. >Татa goes to open the door
  12. >A muffled gunshot
  13. >A spray of blood
  14. >Тата falls back with a hole in his forehead
  15. >Everyone screams
  16. >There's shouting outside in a language that sounds familiar but I can't remember
  17. >Windowglass gets smashed to pieces as something flies in through it
  18. >Its a grenade
  19. >Елена freezes in place immediately alongside me as we watch the metal sphere collide with the floor
  20. >"Анон, Елена, get back!"
  21. >I grab Елена and throw the both of us to the floor
  22. >Мама rushes towards the armed explosive, somehow managing to pick it off the floor and throw it out the window
  23. >It explodes outside with a deafening boom, sending glass flying everywhere
  24. >My ears are ringing and my vision is hazy
  25. >My sister helps me off the floor, we're both shaking like leaves
  26. >Look back towards the kitchen
  27. >Fight back tears as I see Мама
  28. >She has been torn to shreds by the explosion and has glass shards covering her body everywhere
  29. >Rush over to her and try to shake her awake
  30. >She can barely move and most of her right arm has been blown off
  31. >She's coughing up a lot of blood as I try to help her into a sitting position
  32. >"Анон please, stop."
  33. >Say that I won't let her die
  34. >"Анон, listen to me."
  35. >Try to say its not true but realize that there's no way to help her at this point
  36. >"You and your sister must get to the harbor, a boat is waiting for you there."
  37. >She coughs up more blood, her face really pale now
  38. >"My time on this earth is almost over, god is calling me back to heaven."
  39. >She smiles as blood drips from the side of her mouth
  40. >"You two are the greatest gifts that a mother like me could hope for."
  41. >Hug her for what I know for sure will be the last time
  42. >"Goodbye my children, may you find peace wherever you end up."
  43. >Мама goes stiff in my arms as she exhales her last breath
  44. >There are also moans of pain outside from the men who attacked us
  45. >They were apparently also caught in the blast but some were now getting back up
  46. >Urgently tell Елена we have to go
  47. >She just seems frozen in place with tears running down her cheeks as she stares at Мама
  48. >Grab her arm and forcefully yank her with me as we run out to the back door
  49. >Only manage to grab a small bag of food and clothes that I had lying on the floor on the way
  50. >We run and run until night arives
  51. >Lie down on grass underneath the stars
  52. >See the fires burning in the distance before falling asleep
  53. >Avoid enemy army patrols and eventually arrive to harbor next day
  54. >Have my certificate on my neck that says where I'm going
  55. >Get on refugee boat as instructed
  56. >Eventually arrive to new land after weeks of travelling
  57. >Both me and my sister are completely sea sick by the time we reach land
  58. >Spend the first week on land cooped up inside a building and being interviewed about what happened
  59. >Memories of what happened to Мама and Татa still feel too fresh so I stay silent for most of it
